Male Idolization in ACOTAR

Has anyone else realized certain parts of this fandom are absolutely obsessed with the Bat boys as dads and as uncles? I've even seen them for the other high lords, Lucien, and Varian. Full-on pages worth of headcanons and fanfics of them, but almost none of the women?

Don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with imagining those headcanons, it's cute. But we've almost hit a point, where we've started to put these men on pedestals for learning to braid hair for their future daughters or teaching them to fight. Also, them being "overprotective males in their daughters/nieces' life" isn't cute, it's patriarchal and problematic. This whole girl!dad fetishization has gotten out of hand.

Why shouldn't High Lady Feyre Cursebreaker teach Nyx to fight? How special would it be for Feyre, who's been illiterate almost her whole life, to teach Nyx to read? For it to become commonplace for Nyx even as an adult to ask his mother to read to him because her voice is that soothing and comforting to him.

For Nesta, who has a fear of becoming as cold as her mother, to sit each night at her daughter's dresser braiding her hair and teaching her that beauty is internal as much as it is external? For her daughter to admire her mother's loyalty to her friends/family and wanting to be just like her when she grows up?

For Elain, whose kindness and softness has been viewed as a weakness, to teach her warrior son to garden. That it's completely ok to want to fight, but there's strength in learning to do something as gentle as growing flowers.

These women are phenomenal and deserve their credit.

james potter is the fun dad.

regulus hates this. he wants to be fun too. but no, it’s james who harry runs too when he wants to laugh til he cries. it’s james who lets harry fly just a little higher than he should or buys him far too many toys when the toy chest is already overflowing. it’s james who harry goes to when he wants a sweet treat before dinner or to be swung upside down til his hair matches his fathers even more. james potter is the fun dad- not regulus.

but, what regulus takes far too long to see- is he is the safe dad. it’s regulus who harry’s little feet paddle over to when he scrapes his knee or bumps his head. it’s regulus who rocks and sings harry a lullaby before bed. it’s regulus side of the bed young harry crawls into after a night terror and he’s too frightened to sleep alone. oh yes- james potter is the fun dad, but regulus is the safe dad.

not to say harry has no fun with regulus or doesn’t feel safe with james. harry knows his dads love and adore him and both do that perfectly. but sometimes he just needs to have a laugh with james, or a cry with regulus.

and that’s okay.

(this is one of those texts that I write when I see comparisons, and that end up being more of a reflection of mine and my revolt than, I don’t know, an analysis. it’s a rant. I’ll be talking about acotar, and it’s totally anti Nesta.)

I’m always amazed at the connections people make of Nesta with any female character who reads books or uses knives. it doesn’t make any sense in my head as these characters are usually strong, are actively fighting something or have had a hard enough life to form their personality, which is not the case with Nesta.

Nesta is seen as strong for being cruel and arrogant, living at the expense of others, and abusing her younger sister. her development is so rotten it’s honestly offensive when compared to Emilia, who lost her sister and was blinded by rage; with Zoya, who was taught from an early age that the world hated people like her and that she had to be the best to survive; with Manon who literally only knew evil and when she fought her oppressor, she lost everything she had. it’s embarrassing to see you comparing someone so undeveloped with good characters.

and I will never be able to understand how they can compare these and other characters with one who for years only watched as her younger sister fought for the life of her entire family. she made a point of saying over and over again how this sister was nothing, how no one would miss her and how she was just illiterate. and even if Nesta had someone who taught her to be cruel, why only Feyre? why not with Elain? and why did she decide that Emerie and Gwyn were good enough to get her sympathy and IC wasn’t? you know, there’s no answer to basic questions and that’s a reflection of how undeveloped it is. she doesn’t have a compelling enough story for anything.

Nesta in acotar was not depressed, had no illnesses, was nothing but cruel. Nesta in the rest of the trilogy is nothing more than that, she doesn’t fight anything and her anger is just pointless. it’s so incredibly pointless.

Az, Cass and Rhys - A Court of Thorns and Roses

Artist: @thehannanguyen

I know this is a somber piece, but they all genuinely look like they just exited their final exams, know they failed, and now have accepted their fate.

“I always forget how beautiful she is.” Nesta could have sworn pink stole over Emerie’s brown cheeks.

you know what made me really mad? this.

can sjm handle anything properly? like anything at all?

she has set up this heavily poc coded civilization as being almost cartoonishly abusive towards women and absolutely riddled with toxic masculinity. as if that wasn't bad enough, now you make this abuse victim shit on other illyrian women? illyrian women who sjm has all but said point blank are being constantly abused?

emerie deserves better. poc people deserve better. what little rep they get shouldn't be so toxic and vile.

inej being a badass - a compilation

because she is in fact the baddest bitch out there and we all know it, here’s my list of her best moments:

  • while being held captive by van eck, not only does she not give any information away, she laughs in van eck’s face, headbutts him, breaks his nose and says “You lay a finger me on me and Kaz Brekker will cut the baby from your pretty wife’s stomach and hang its body from a balcony at the Exchange.” like damn girl. she really did that
  • “I like it when men beg, but this isn’t the time for it.” iconic. needs no explanation
  • the fact that matthias, a trained elite soldier, instantly recognizes her as a threat (”The bronze girl’s daggers merit watching.”)
  • and immediately after, matthias tries to get away, but inej just casually trips him and goes “Clumsy, this one.” like it’s not even hard
  • when she gets stabbed by oomen and is bleeding to death, but still manages to pull herself up the wooden crates to escape. my untrained ass could never
  • about hunting slavers: “They would learn to fear her, and they would know her by her name.” damn right they will!!
  • at the end of ck, when she breaks into pekka rollins’ house, threatens him and leaves a black crow behind. one of the best moments of the whole duology, change my mind
  • realizing her own worth: “I may not have Kaz’s devious mind, but I am a dangerous girl.” absolute banger
  • let’s not forget how she casually slides inside a tank and fires it like she does this all the time
  • when the hostage exchange happens and she whisper to van eck “You will see me once more, but only once.” you know that man was scared shitless. all it took was a small bow the next time they saw each other, and he started sweating
  • bajan threatening to force-feed her, and she just going “Try. You’ll have trouble teaching piano without all you fingers.” yes girl, get his ass!!!
  • firing rojakke and punching him with brass knuckles is really just a normal day at work for her
  • when she and tante heleen meet at the ice court, but inej doesn’t let herself be intimated and fights back: “I threw your girl in the ice moat, and she’s better off there than with you.” have you ever something more badass? i think not

in conclusion, inej ghafa is an absolute queen and a force to be reckoned with. if you mess with her, you deserve what’s coming to you

emerie deserves better.

as a black woman, it’s very disgruntling, but not surprising, to see emerie, a female poc, consistently forgotten within the fandom and by SJM. i think we are already aware of the bias within the fandom, along with SJM’s poor diversity and representation within her novels, so let’s not forget that.

i am fed up with fan artists drawing the entire character catalog in acotar, but for some reason, they fall up short when including emerie in their work. by the way, i’m talking about the ones that include the inner circle, along with gw/yn and lu/cien. it’s understandable if it is just an inner circle centered piece; however, with the addition of the other characters i named, emerie SHOULD be included. almost always, i never see emerie depicted in these “family posts.” and if commenters ask why she isn’t there, the artist replies with, “well, i already drew a lot of characters in there. is that not enough?” i have never been graced with seeing such a pitiful, disgusting, and humiliating response. i don’t even want to begin by talking about when fan artists DO include emerie in their art, and she’s sometimes WHITEWASHED.

i’m not going to go into a whole think piece about how emerie was pushed to the side as a poc woman and as a valkyrie by two white women by some very biased valkyrie stans (from what i have experienced, if it doesn’t apply to you, then move along), and it doesn’t help that SJM seemed to push the narrative of making her white characters being able to conquer/accomplish something in a poc space (the BR), and i don’t want to hear that it was because of feminism. we all know SJM is a nut, and some acotar stans are too.

As an Indian-American woman reading this series, yes to everything you said.

Me everytime someone suggests Henry Cavill, a white man who is almost 40, to play Rhysand or Casteel, POC characters that are supposed to appear mid-20s

^^^ This is everything. Also here's your aggressive reminder, bc this fandom is filled with too many ignorant white people, to stop fan casting Azriel as Matthew Daddario from Shadowhunters. Daddario is fully white.

Let me tell you why Nesta and the other Valkyries winning the blood right plot was stupid as hell. They have only been training for what, several months? And not only won but made it up the mountain and nesta was able to kill several Illyrian soldiers. Huge plot hole. I don’t care if your trainer is the best fighter in the world, a few months of training is only gonna teach you the basics.

Example: Aelin fucking Galathynius was the best assassin ever. Not a good assassin, the best. Had even the king shook. And when she went to train with Rowan? He handed her ass to her on a silver platter. She trained since she was a kid and was considered THE best assassin known. You expect me to believe that three women who have absolutely ZERO prior fighting experience and have only been training a few months to win the blood rite?

It was described as something extremely brutal and hard thing to do. It made not only the blood rite to be a lot easier than previously described but also made Cassian, Azriel and Rhys and not to mention the entirety of the Illyrian forces look weak AF. I’m all about girl boss vibe but SJM girlbossed too close to the sun on this book. She had 700+ pages to write and managed to obliterate her past badass portrayal of the Illyrian army.

I also saw a post saying how nesta was a queen for killing 6 Illyrian warriors while Feyra was weak and just stood around watching the war. 1) Feyra stepped in for the summer court and helped and fought there. 2) that was more realistic then what nesta did 100%. It made sense Feyra wasn’t fighting with the armies because she wasn’t trained for that yet and she would have been a hinderance. This whole book was one plot hole after the other. Pretty sure SJM just wrote it for the sex plot and money without serious thought into a real plot. Not to mention not even close to making nesta take accountability for her abusive behavior. She just gave her new friends.

Now if it was Morrigan who won the blood rite, that would have been believable and interesting to read about. She is 500+ years old with fighting experience who has trained with different fighting techniques and styles.

@devochka15 Yes to everything you said! I would also like to add as a POC woman, if SJM says that the Illyrians are proper POC representation then there should have been more emphasis on Emerie, a disabled Illyrian woman, being the first not only to participate but win the rite.

This astounding milestone was brushed past to make room for the Nessian reunion. To WOC reading this, Emerie is not a WOC they can see themselves in reading SJM novels, but merely another fill-in-the-racial-quota POC character that was inserted to further a white woman's narrative.

Overall-The blood rite plot in ACOSF lacked critical thinking skills.
