Devilman Guide

Have you ever wanted to get into Devilman but weren’t sure where to start? Hopefully this post will clear things up for you!

Devilman is a hugely influential manga created by Go Nagai in the early 1970s. Many plot elements in Japanese media since then can be traced back to Devilman. To give some examples, Neon Genesis Evangelion (including Rebuild), Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and the Shin Megami Tensei series all contain plot elements with either a strong resemblance to Devilman or reference it directly. Even Kaworu from Evangelion, who has spawned many copies himself, is heavily inspired by Devilman’s Ryo. If you want to read an intense yet silly manga while simultaneously gaining a deeper understanding of the origin of Japanese media made since the 1970s, Devilman is worth checking out.

Tbh I really think this was the best possible way to handle JeanKasa.

Quite obviously, as a JeanKasa shipper I wanted them together. But I didn’t know how it could be executed. I didn’t think it’d be the best to suddenly see them married in an epilogue without any build up. It’d make sense, yes, but it’d feel like yeah Mikasa needed to end up with someone and since Eren is gone, so Jean it is. It’d look like he’s been thrown there casually just because he’s the most convenient option. I really hoped there will be at least some sort of development or implied development before that. But also, I really didn’t want to see Jean making a move anytime soon because that’d make him look so cheap and inconsiderate. The reason JeanKasa is so beautiful to me is because how considerate Jean is of Mikasa and her feelings, how selfless his love is. So I genuinely was so puzzled about how it could be done. And like always, Yams handled it brilliantly. I’m not saying his writing is perfect and doesn’t have issues, it does. But this has been my pattern as in every time I’ve doubted a certain plot point could be executed without making it look lame, I’ve been proven wrong.

Now, there wasn’t really room for JeanKasa build up in the story because the timeline the story covers, it’s all EreMika. Not just shipping wise but EreMika is the core of the plot, you have to admit that even if you don’t ship them. I’ve always said Jean could only come to Mikasa’s life (romantically) in a post Eren time (I thought Eren would die). But like, post Eren means story is over? Yams said No. The story is over, but not completely. The main theme we had started with, humans vs titans, has been taken care of. Eren has rid the world of titans as he had said he would. But that didn’t solve the problem. There’s still a lot to do and that’s where the story leaves us. At the end of phase one but it’s also the beginning of phase two, it’s not a decisive end. And that’s why it leaves room for new developments. So it leaves us with potential for Mikasa and Jean. And we did get the implications. Jean fixing his hair for two pages as they’re arriving at Paradis is for Mikasa. We know it is because even non shippers are making the connection. Moreover, he’s styling it just like in his chapter 127 daydream. And in fact Mikasa too has the same haircut, her fringe is parted on the left in the same style. It’s just tied differently that’s why it looks different.

The very fact that Mikasa once again has long hair is very intriguing because as we know, Jean loves her long hair. But all this time Mikasa has kept it short. And Eren is the one who suggested it to her. Like, I get that plot wise it’s because she doesn’t have to fight anymore but I’m talking about how the narrative kind of connects long haired Mikasa with Jean and short haired Mikasa with Eren. In Jean’s daydream she has long hair, in Eren’s alternate reality she has short hair. So, seeing her with long hair once again gave me hope. I also saw someone say it’s like a revisit to the moment Jean had first seen her. I really liked that.

I saw some fans say that the daydream itself might be a future memory sent to Jean by Eren and while I personally didn’t see it that way, it’s a theory? Like yeah it’s kind of funny how JeanKasa is the only ship Yams drew like this, older and married, with a baby. The story has touched the topic of Mikasa having babies a few times. So, yeah. Seems possible. Also, another point I saw people bring up, the narrative paints moving on as something good and as something you should do. Moving on doesn’t necessarily have to be romantic relationship wise but the story specifically has connected her moving on to her finding another man (in Eren and Armin’s conversation). So, I think there’s been enough implications to allow us room for our headcanons. In fact this is the best to me because it didn’t butcher Jean’s character, neither did it make him look like second choice thrown there as a stand in for Eren. It told us there are new developments going on. The story of titans is over but the story of how humanity finally finds peace has just started, it’s a new story full of new possibilities. And none of the couples have been confirmed to have gotten ‘together’ in that sense. So yes, it’s an open ending that is very much in favour of JeanKasa and I’m happy with it.
