Hey everyone, Discord links are down for the time being. There was a spambot swarm, and the mods and I wanna cut it off at the source. I'll change the links in a few days once it dies down. Thanks!!!

Hey everyone, I just started a new job, but through unfortunate circumstances outside of my control, I won't be getting a paycheck until after the end of the month, and things are looking tight with bills on our end without that income. Any little bit is helpful and super **super** appreciated

Sure would be a shame if Utah citizens would message their Senators to let them know that they should vote to remove Donald Trump from office to prevent him from ever being elected ever again

Sure would be a shame if someone posted a quick link to their contact info

ANYWAY

Senator Lee: https://www.lee.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/contact

Senator Romney: https://www.romney.senate.gov/contact

(other state citizens should look to contact their senators too, you can look them up at this link: https://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm)

Hey UT Comic Artists

I want to open a dialog. Lot’s of our art is getting dubs on youtube, but I’ve noticed channels growing and getting quite a lot of views recently, which easily translates into monetization, specifically as the video’s are often watched by young children.

How does this make you feel? Do you think a shout out or credit (Exposure) is an appropriate trade for your work? I’m wondering how the community feels as I’ve never heard of an artist getting payed, but I’m sure the channel is. Do you think it’s okay for dubbers to profit off comic artists while they get only exposure in return?

Ps: when asking to dub, many comic dubbers leave out that they are making money from the channel. How does that make you feel as a part of this community?

I asked for input so now you’ll get some of mine. I’m finding a lot of the dubbing community to not be very communicative with their intent, and also pushy. When I first got asks for comic dubbing, I was unaware of their use with my works for monetization. They asked me, of course to dub it… But didn’t inform me.

In my opinion, dubbing should be collaborative, not something where people see a nice little pool of money waiting to happen. I spent several months on my last comic chapter, and someone profiting off it without anything in return is a pretty large “fuck you and fuck your time and skill” to my face.

As far as the “exposure” part of comic making is concerned. Did I get it, yes, and I can’t say it was the best experience. I got new followers for sure, mostly extremely young ones that flooded my inbox with asks of ships, Ink and Error, drawing for NSFW, and many other things I’ve never even drawn on this blog nor have an interest in. (People would even attempt to role play with me in the questions…)

So yeah, didn’t really translate into meaningful following as much as I’d like. I prefer compensation when money is involved.

PS: Yes, giving credit to the artist should be standard, not some special niceness granted by the dubbers. I am not even arguing they should give credit cause that’s pretty obvious. If they don’t, I highly suggest you copystrike those fuckers right away.

Another talking point I want to bring up is how I’ve noticed many people answering that “they’re just happy to get noticed, as they don’t think their art is good anyway”

Um… so let me get this straight. Dubbers get to monetize off low self esteem artists cause the artists feel like they don’t deserve anything for their work, even though the work is clearly generating views?

I can’t help artists feel better about their work, but I do get the sense that dubbers are taking advantage of artists who don’t feel their work is “worth it” or taking advantage of the fact that they hold power of being a large channel over small time artists who don’t know how to group up and demand compensation for the millions of views they’ve generated.

PS: It feels like dubbers are waiting for artists to ask about monetization, attempting to hide it, and not offering compensation up front. This is skeevy, and if they are true fans of the artists they’re profiting off of I’d assume they’d want to compensate artists for a portion of the money they are generating from their work.

This is super eye-opening, I appreciate this dialogue going on, honestly. I am a voice actor who dubs comics and I'm ashamed to admit I haven't given comic artists in the past the compensation they deserve.

To all young dubbers out there, it is a well trod rule that you should always ask permission first before you dub a comic, and you should always ALWAYS credit the artist of the comic. That's non-negotiable. But I think it's just as important to mention monetization of the artist's work as well. If you're not willing to spread that good revenue money around, buddy better not even touch it at all. I'm gonna have to get better at this. Thank you for speaking out about it!
