This is my first contribution to @50-states-50-pynch-fics

My home state, Tennessee, gets a shout-out at the end of Greywaren, when "Ronan had just returned from a ley line" there, so here's my version of what he might have been doing. For his destination, I picked one of the weirdest places in Tennessee: Oak Ridge, nicknamed the "secret city."

This fic coincides pretty perfectly with Oppenheimer premiering, because the "haunted hotel" in my story is a real place he stayed at during WWII. Why? Well, because the atomic bomb was built in Oak Ridge.

I hope you enjoy the ghostly hijinks in this fic!

gimme an au where adam is a classical music major or something at julliard and he worked his ass off to get there, but here’s ronan lynch a fucking prodigy who hates that he’s at julliard and just wants to drop out. typical ronan love at first sight and adam enemies to lovers canon tropes.

watching mstief’s writing the raven cycle webinar and I just want everyone to know that she just explicitly stated that adam was supposed to go full villain in her first draft but changed her mind bc “the worst thing that could happen is they stop being friends”

SHE ALSO JUST SAID GANSEY WAS LOOSELY INSPIRED BY TINTIN?

omg she was talking about writing unpleasant characters and gave this “pet possum paradox” metaphor about how if you see a dead possum on the road you likely won’t care about it as much as if the possum had a collar on it bc that would mean it was someone’s pet and the only difference that makes it sad is that someone loved it. And she essentially said that the only reason ronan worked as a character and didn’t make readers instantly hate him is bc he was essentially gansey’s pet possum. yeah I’m fine

[maggie talking about the dream thieves, specifically referring to gansey and adam]: “this is the one where the boys are bitches”

other highlights:

  • Adam and Noah were originally going to be the same person
  • Gansey’s backstory and reason for seeking Glendower was originally going to be bc of daddy issues (??)
  • Her early vision of BLLB was originally going to feature Macha, a Celtic war goddess
  • Ooh she said that what makes Blue and Gansey an appealing romance to her was that they are both people who have to be hyper-responsible and act super grown up most of the time, but when they’re together they’re allowed to be young. Whereas Ronan and Adam were the opposite, and their appeal is that they are both constantly feeling like no one takes them seriously enough (Adam being secondary to Gansey, Ronan being Ronan) so when they’re together they can feel like they’re “adult” and capable
  • Also said that Henry’s purpose in the story is to prove that Gansey is capable of living after anxiety, and that Henry must exist in order for Gansey to believe he can live after Glendower
  • K y’all are gonna hate this one. The camaro wheel? You know the mysterious camaro wheel? She said she had put that there as breadcrumb for something that would have been explored later in the POSSIBLE SARCHENGSEY SPINOFF she ended up not writing.
  • Upon reflecting on Noah’s role in the story: the reason Noah is not remembered is bc there had to be a significant sacrifice to bring Gansey back, like Adam’s autonomy, and being remembered is the thing Noah cared about the most, but he willingly sacrificed it to save his friend. (ngl this changed my whole perspective a but on the forgetting Noah thing. Like still, ow???? But I kinda get it now)
  • Not really trc-specific but she sees herself as writing “wonder” as a genre, utilizing magic for awe and beauty, as opposed to the “horror” genre which utilizes magic for fear and repulsion. Just thought that was neat
  • Oh yeah apparently people hated Adam so much in the early days that she had people come to her house and berate her and her family begging her to kill him off??? What is wrong with people
  • Wanna end this on a funny note so I’m just gonna bring up Gansey as Tintin with daddy issues again

It’s reveal time!!

Works will now show up with their writers’ names on them, so go check them out!

(There was one fic posted totally anonymously, so it still has no writer name.)

This is the end of the exchange. Thanks so much for participating and for your amazing creations!

The “Chainsaw is Ronan’s heart” metaphor goes SO hard and I cannot stop thinking about it. Chainsaw being a fragile baby bird that Ronan has to constantly care for during The Raven Boys, a tiny thing that’s up screaming in the middle of the night. By the Dream Thieves she’s grown, but she’s rarely around during that book. Only in times where Ronan feels at peace—showing his dream plane to his friends, sitting on the floor of Monmouth with Gansey explaining his dreams—or when he’s being particularly vulnerable—giving her to Calla and learning about how to save his mother. By Blue Lily, Lily Blue, Chainsaw is once again a permanent presence, as Ronan has accepted himself and is coming into his own—he’s still hurting, but he’s healing slowly. To the end of the series, where she has a special name for Atom, but shes missing from the finale, missing after Ronan discovers his mother’s body. And in the Dreamer Trilogy, where she’s with Ronan but less of an importance. Where Adam brings her to a sleeping Ronan, and wakes her to see him again.
