Remember however that “problematic” is not a homogenous category, and “everything is a little bit problematic” should not be used to elide the differences between media which maybe has some unfortunate implications if you think about it, and media which outright promotes hatred. “It’s okay to enjoy your problematic fave” means very different things depending on whether the problematicity in question is a thoughtless comment in an interview from 2004, or multiple sexual assaults.
This isn’t necessarily to say that you should purge yourself of anything, even really bad things, but your critical relationship with it needs to acknowledge what the actual problems are, not just a vague sense of “yeah it’s problematic.”

i’m going to use this as a platform to discuss my worries and fears about this subunit news. because i for one, am NOT excited about this.
i can’t even bring myself to be a little excited.
the popularity of taekook in the bangtan fanbase is actually frighteningly higher than the other members, with yoongi and jimin on the step lower, and then the other 3 members hanging on by a thread depending upon if the fanbase is feeling their look that week.
a subunit, no matter who it’s composed of, has the potential to cause so much backlash, issues within the group, wide the popularity gap that is already there, and rain on the members that already don’t get enough attention as it is.
it’s bad when taehyung has to go on stage and tell armys to please love all 7 members. it’s bad when jhope or jin or namjoon can’t do a vapp without like 78% of the comments being about other members, or so many more fans will show up for a taekook or a yoongi broadcast than a hoseok or a jin broadcast.
say for instance, the subunit is yoonmin like a lot of people think it will be; that will push yoongi and jimin’s already much higher than the last 3 members popularity even higher, and broaden the gap between yoongi+the maknaes, and the remaining 3 hyungs.
if it’s a dance line based unit; aka jhope, jimin and jungkook, jungkook and jimin will most likely outshine jhope becaue even to this day people complain abut jjhope being in the center even the little bit he is, and claim that jungkook a nd jimin are the best dancers, and that STiLL don’t know that hoseok is the main/leader dancer.
if it’s a subunit that involves taehyung or jungkook, or god forbid, only taehyung and jungkook, the backlash i don’t even want to think about, as much as people ALREADY say that they should just leave bangtan and the rest of bangtan is useless.
if namjoon or jin is a part of the subunit, it’ll be under appreciated, if it’s a 2 man unit like, jungkook or jhope for instance, jhope will again get washed away under the jungkook positive comments, or receive negative comments too that happens a lot.
i’m not going to lie, i hope there isn’t a subunit. i don’t want one. i’m not ready. mybe it’s because i’m a hoseok stan and the level of difference there is between popularity of members in this group makes me scared. i dont’ want to see even one bad thing written about hobi. i don’t want to see even one person complaining that hoseok isn’t good enough, or that he’s bringing the group down.
maybe it’s because i don’t want to see namjoon or jin’s popular go even farther down as a result of taehyung, jungkook or jimin/yoong’s popularity going up.
i love ALL of bangtan equally, and it’s sad when i have to be scared because of fans shitting on the other members that aren’t their favs. but that’s just my opinion and it might be an unpopular one….
