“How about you? I can’t even tell if you’re a bold warrior or a foolish one without any backup!”

"Perhaps you should be less concerned about me arriving with no one, and more concerned about that I have managed to do so," she replied with a smile, but it did not reach her eyes. They were sharp as she gazed at him, unblinking and observant.

"I'm not here to fight. Yet." She wished she was -- but she had to have restraint. "I simply wanted to come and see the Demon of Xiliang up close, to see what I will be up against in the battles to come."

Although a man of many talents, setting traps is the one thing that Jia Chong considers his specialty. Perhaps that is why he takes his time, to the point that Seimei’s shikigami, too, slow their pace.
Even from his position in the trees, the impressive stature of Baidi castle can be seen overhead; in this world that is like, but also very unlike the one he comes from, there are other castles, too—ones from Kanbei’s and Seimei’s land—marking the coast. He sees that the sun is setting now, grasping at the wispy clouds as it slips under the horizon. The long shadows that fall over the forest provide the perfect cover, and Jia Chong is certain that the coalition will not see them coming.
He can hear them approaching minutes before he sees them down the trail, the blades of swords and spears glinting in the minimal light. With a silent gesture of his hand, the shikigami take their places, with their own weapons poised. Jia Chong pulls out his axes too, and runs his thumb idly over the hilt. The messenger they released earlier did not disappoint, he thinks with a smile, and, when the moment is right, orders the attack.
He hears a roaring in his ears, the sound of a rushing tide of men. After the initial wave of chaos crashes, he takes to the fray. The shikigami part, allowing him through, and the frantic coalition soldiers that come into view are cut down with a decisive swipe of his axes. It does not take long for the shikigami to completely encircle the coalition force; the bait has been taken, the trap set, and now it is time for Jia Chong to collect his reward.
But despite the haze of the battle, he spots the flash of the long, blond hair of the woman in the crowd.
            ❛❛ Yuanji. ❜❜
He cannot be surprised she is there. After all, Sima Zhao is one of the three officers that had gone directly for the bracelet—and Zhao is her charge.
❛❛ I suppose you’re looking for Zhao, ❜❜ he says, almost as nonchalantly as Zhao himself. He thinks of the many times the two of them tore through the streets of Luoyang together, looking for and chasing after the younger Sima. Although those days are not far gone, he quickly puts them out from his mind.
❛❛ Unfortunately for you, this is as far as you will go. But, ❜❜ he says, raising his axes, ❛❛ I will be sure to send him your regards. ❜❜

It would be much nicer if the bracelets were unnecessary, but they needed any upper hand that they could get, even if it meant taking dangerous risks. She just wished that Zhao and the others had not been so hasty to get that far ahead... It was not going to be easy to catch up to them, but she trusted they could handle themselves long enough for it. Plenty of reinforcements were on their way, herself included.

Often times, Yuanji was not the one on the front lines. However, this was a different situation, and she did what needed to be done quickly and efficiently. Once she and the soldiers under her command succeeded in ambushing Chen Qian's advance, their morale was bolstered. With the many close calls that they'd had, winning the battle was revitalizing, even if it was not winning the war. She was glad that they felt that way but calmly reminded them to not let it distract them from the dangers.

Little did she know she was foretelling their next trial, one with far more lethal encounters. Due to the commotion making it impossible to quickly get through, Yuanji took her men by an alternative route in order to regroup with Shingen and Kenshin, but it was uncomfortably inactive. It was also, however, the fastest and safest route to return, and time was not on their side given their predicament. Her men agreed that the risk was worth taking -- it was the wrong choice. With the shadows looming as the sun began to set, none had spotted the ambush until it had already sprung into action, and they were attacked.

Yuanji took to a defensive stance, supporting the men around her as the numbers were overwhelming. Swift knife throws to the forehead, neck, or anywhere else lethal, she took any opportunity; and with it, she saw they did not die as humans did. They were different, but it was unclear as to why.

Before she could do anything with that information, they became too surrounded, and Yuanji called for them to back into a group formation to hopefully minimize the risk of losing any more of them.

"Spears!" She called out, and while those with swords backed to the center of the group, those with spears stepped forward, essentially creating a circle of spikes to keep their enemy at bay for a time. Yuanji stood by the spearmen while she sought the more optimal targets. But it was a simple temporary defense tactic that she already knew would not endure for long.

After all, they fell right into the trap and had nowhere to go. It was obviously not looking good for them. Yuanji gripped her knives tightly, looking to the remaining allies with their spears facing forward, and to the shikigami surrounding them. Deep breath, deep breath. They could still get out of this, she only needed to look for an opening. A thinner spot. Anything. She had enough knives left.

In an unexpected distraction, Yuanji immediately turned to the sound of a voice she had been hoping to hear since her journey in this realm, yet it was not the relief she had hoped for. Instead, she felt an oncoming dread upon realizing things got much, much harder than it could have been before. Of course, the one time that they go through the suspiciously quiet route, it would be somewhere he was lurking; but with how efficient it was, he was smart to lay a trap there. Someone was bound to pass by. Lips parted in a mix of surprise and confusion, and very briefly even curled into a seldom seen look of disgust and anger. It was gone in a blink as she remained level-headed. However, knowing it was Jia Chong who was involved with them, she knew that any opening she was initially seeking would be difficult to find. He was clever as he was thorough.

While she wondered where he had been and why he was helping the enemy, it was not the time or place to consider it. He had his reasons, whatever they were, and it was not worth the assumptions. Amber eyes looked around again to the shikigami surrounding them, then to the soldiers, knuckles white as they held their weapons firm. Their fearful but resolute gaze, ready for whatever came next.

They looked to her, and to what her call would be. Yuanji did not want to let them down, all those who chose to follow her. Think, think--

"I see you've been busy, Jia Chong. I was almost starting to miss you and your quips," she replied. Due to the familiarity between the two of them, her go-to plan was to prolong any kind of conversation while looking for any opening. Eyeing the blood already on his axes, she knew nothing good would come of him deciding to use them again. "That messenger, was he a part of the plan too? You like being many paces ahead of everyone else. I’m sure you’ve already thought about what to do once you’ve surrounded your enemy -- so how do you intend to play the game this time?"

Like many times in this broken world, Wang Yuanji wondered if she was in a vivid dream. It was both hell and paradise, former enemies able to work together in peace, but only due to an end that would claim them all if they did not unite as one. Yet there were times when their own allies turned against them, and most of the time it was not of their own volition; rather, another anomaly of this realm, a power fortunately impossible for mere humans to harness. An individual able to cloud one’s mind and dangle them by strings to do his bidding.

Of all people to be trapped in that state, who worse to pit against her than Jia Chong? It was an unfortunate coincidence, and a deadly one. Though she avoided his projectiles, they always landed a mark on someone’s life. On the other hand, Yuanji could not wield her weapon against him, knowing what he was trapped in. Instead, she did what she could against the opposing soldiers whenever they drew near to her allies, her knives landing with devastating accuracy.

While it looked even at first glance, she knew it was far from the truth. It was those who feared death fighting against those who had nothing to lose. Yuanji had yet to encounter this power that claimed Jia Chong, and the only method she knew of to break that trance was to defeat them, that they did not respond as well to compassion or reason. Perhaps had it not been her, defeating him could be more plausible; but her fingers trembled at each thought of striking him down. She could not get a precise shot at him, and any chance she had from through the fighting crowds could risk a fatal hit. She was no powerhouse able to storm through and destroy the enemy, she was decisive and tactful. There was no outwitting this. Not only was interference on this route unprecedented, reinforcements were already spread so thin that they had no choice but to hold their ground.

Dammit. Why now of all times did she have to hesitate? Why did it stop her in her tracks when she knew that she had to take that risk to stop him? She knew better than to put personal feelings above duty, and yet when it mattered most, she did just that.

“Jia Chong, stop this madness!” But he would not – no, could not – listen to her plea, if her words could reach him at all. She already knew that. Impossible to safely get close, but unable to run, she felt helplessness as she saw others die around her. Soldiers she had encouraged prior to the battle, who she had sat with, ate with, laughed with. Learned of their hardships and the homes waiting for them. All because she faltered.

She evaded another of his projectiles, once again hearing the gurgling of another taken out behind her. A realization set in: unless through sheer luck, he was never hitting her on purpose. If she had not moved it would still have barely gone by her. It was as though he intended to, but could not follow through at the last moment. Was it her only other option?

Yuanji had to take it. She did not think it through yet, nor plan ahead beyond it, but she could not let anyone else die.

In full sprint she ran straight for him, ducking and evading oncoming attacks from his allies, but not completely clear of wounds as an arrow, much faster and harder to see, struck her in her back. Briefly her face contorted in pain, but she pressed forward, as her way back closed around her.

The moment that she reached Jia Chong, she threw out her knives behind her and charged at him. With a fierce yell, she tackled him with every ounce of strength in her body, landing with him on his back against the dirt and her atop him.

Her arms remained gripped tightly around him, her heart pounding from the remaining adrenaline coursing through her veins. For that moment, she had not felt the searing pain of his weapon piercing through her small frame. She could feel her abdomen grow warm. He must have done it as she tackled him, she thought. He was always so quick to react.

image

A shaky breath left her as she loosened her hold on him and rose up, amber eyes gazing into steel blue. He had to be in there. Everyone else had been. She wondered, if he could be freed of his spell, what he would feel. Would he feel remorse, knowing his allies and her blood was on his unwilling hands? What a terrible thing it was.

“I’m so sorry. It’s not your fault. It’s not your fault,” she spoke to him gently, pleadingly, a hand cupping his cheek. “I couldn’t take the chance when I needed to most and made this choice. But you need to wake up. Wake up, and feel no regret for what they did to all of us… but the strength to continue on and bring us home.”

After a while you learn the subtle difference Between holding a hand and chaining a soul, And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning And company doesn’t mean security. And you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts And presents aren’t promises, And you begin to accept your defeats With your head up and your eyes open With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child, And you learn to build all your roads on today Because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for plans And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight. After a while you learn… That even sunshine burns if you get too much. So you plant your garden and decorate your own soul, Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers. And you learn that you really can endure… That you really are strong And you really do have worth… And you learn and learn… With every good-bye you learn.

Prior to losing her family, Wang Yi was a complacent and happy woman. She was content in her life with her loving husband Zhao Ang and her endearing children. While she was extremely protective and willing to go to war for her family’s safety, she preferred the simple life of staying home and taking care of others.

When they were lost to her, a part of her died with them. The cheerful and carefree woman was but a shadow of the past. She had no one to turn to, and she lost purpose - but she stood through the grief and looked to the kingdom her husband had served. With her decision to join Wei in search of a new direction, Wang Yi cut all of her long and lustrous hair to the shoulder length style she is known for now.

“Indeed,” came a simple, smooth response as he paced forward with slow, deliberate strides.
        “–but neither should you.”

Well -- he was not wrong, and she was not about to argue that.      “I wanted to be somewhere that no one would bother me,” came her reply, unflinching at his approach. It was of her own volition to step up to aid in Wei’s attack on Hanzhong, yet there was uncertainty in her heart. Not so long ago, she would have been standing by her husband’s side. Now she was alone and picking up what pieces she could. In truth she had yet to discover if she was ready to commit to war -- but she knew she must try.      “Forgive me, my lord. There are not many opportunities to think in silence as of late.”

Setting the jug back on the shelf, its liquid contents sloshed inside loudly as Ruolan shot the woman a guilty look over her shoulder. It hadn’t been the first time someone caught her sneaking around in Cao Cao’s private storehouses, but it was the first that being caught produced something close to shame in her.

“But you shouldn’t either, my lady. I mean, should you?”

Oh, dear. She really was caught in the act, wasn’t she? Wang Yi did not particularly care though. A little smirk would spread across her lips, and she shook her head. “You’re right, I shouldn’t be either. In fact... I believe I was about to be doing the same thing that you are now. Had I come here minutes before, our roles would surely have been reversed.”

“You don’t have to worry. I won’t say anything -- if you grab enough for two.”
