The Benin Empire was a pre-colonial state of what is now Nigeria, home of the Edo people. In the 15th century, Benin began a strong relationship with European travellers. However, by the 19th century, their king began to suspect colonial ambitions. In 1897, Admiral Sir Harry Rawson, in the quest for British Expansion, attacked Benin, and after eight days of fighting, eventually razed and burned the city to the ground, looting the city for valuables to fund the invasion, and destroying the rest.
