i don't get why antis are so obsessed with the "she's his aunt!" argument as if dany being jon's aunt is somehow worse than sansa being his cousin/stepsister. have these people never heard of the westermarck effect? people who grew up thinking they're siblings don't suddenly start developing romantic/sexual feelings for each other once they find out they're not actually biological siblings. meanwhile dany and jon have never met so they don't subconsciously think of each other as close relatives.

Hello anon,

Almost since the moment, I started discussing the series online the topic of incest has been one of the primary topics of discussion. I've addressed my feelings toward incest in fiction on several occasions. Last year in this post I talked about the major reasons why some fans don’t like or feel uncomfortable with the potential of a relationship between Jon and Dany. My conclusion was that they are either opposed to an incestuous relationship or that they find the idea of Jon and Dany getting together to be a cliche.

I take a more pragmatic view of incest in fiction. @nobodysuspectsthebutterfly wrote a really great post discussing incest in fiction. The entire post which you can find here is well worth a read. The relevant points to me were as follows:

The other question you have is regarding how we, the readers, view incestuous relationships – both in real life and among fictional characters.

In modern society, our social mores include incest as a taboo. This feeling can vary from place to place – Americans are generally disgusted by the idea of first cousins marrying (it’s even banned in some states), whereas that feeling is less common in parts of Europe and the Middle East. (Note in early medieval Europe, the Catholic church banned marriage within four degrees of consanguinity, then seven, then four again; by the 20th century, the marriage of second cousins was no longer banned, then only first cousins by the 1980s.) (See hereand here for further details.) But sibling incest is banned pretty much everywhere, especially in marriage (though it varies country to country - again see here for more details).
However – while readers may hold these taboos in real life, they may feel another standard applies in fiction. They will look to the mores of the culture they’re reading about, and use the judgement of that culture rather than their own. Others may feel that anything goes in fiction, or will write incestuous relationships in fanfic because of the taboo (for the angst, for the thrill) – but the general discussion of fanfic and incest is beyond my scope here. (The subject has been covered to exhaustion in fan forums for years; you can see an overview with multiple links here if you’re interested.)

She adds regarding the potential for a relationship between Jon and Dany that:

And as for a strongly potential relationship that happens to be incestuous – that is, Dany/Jon, where they are aunt and nephew, I feel that it is very likely to pass all my tests. And note for Dany, she would not see it as taboo, and for Jon the lack of Westermarck effect would be a great influence on the attraction. There is likely to be angst because GRRM (for Jon because of the taboo and general Targ heritage problems; for Dany because he’s a Stark, among other things), but in general I feel they are most likely to make each other better people and to be a good relationship.

The bolded part is one of the driving forces for most fans who want a relationship between the two. We believe that the two of them together would make them better people and better leaders but most importantly they would be good for one another. They have a lot of parallels but also complimentary traits. They would balance each out if you will.  Dany’s more fiery personality can be tempered by Jon’s much cooler approach and Jon’s rashness can be mitigated by Dany’s more cunning approach. And given all there parallels, there would be a lot of mutual respect and understanding for their success and failures.

Additionally, the potential for an attraction between the two is very present. Have you ever heard of Genetic Sexual Attraction or GSA? According to the Wiki entry:

People tend to select mates who are like themselves, which is known as assortative mating. This holds both for physical appearances and mental traits.
Heredity produces substantial physical and mental similarity between close relatives. Shared interests and personality traits are commonly considered desirable in a mate.
..
For the above reasons, genetic sexual attraction is presumed to occur as a consequence of genetic relatives meeting as adults, typically as a consequence of adoption.
GSA is rare between people raised together in early childhood due to a reversesexual imprinting known as the Westermarck effect, which desensitizes them to later close sexual attraction.

So, basically, we tend to be attracted to people who are like us physically or intellectually. Being related to someone you would share a lot of traits with them and the potential for attraction to someone you are related to but have never met is there. Although, it’s a rare occurrence. But as insane as the genetics are in the World of Ice and Fire there is actual scientific proof that Jon and Dany could be attracted to each other, because they are related but were not raised together or know of each other’s existence.

Putting aside all this stuff, the bottom line for me is that as a reader I can detach my modern morals and beliefs from that of the world and culture I’m reading. I know this isn’t real, it’s a fantasy with dragons and ice demons. Which is as far from reality as one can get. In this world the potential relationship of Jon and Dany is not a taboo, people are not going to lose their shit over it. The Targaryens are perfectly fine with it, they’ve been doing it for a long time. And the Starks have engaged in it as well. The nobility sees a marriage between relatives (not brothers and sisters) as a necessary avenue in order to keep their Houses strong and to pass on their name if there are few relatives left. And sometimes in the case of Tywin and Joanna, it’s a matter of love.

This is not to say we won’t see angst, I’m almost sure of it but it won’t be to the level people believe it’ll be. And from Jon’s perspective, it’ll have more to do with the fact that his father is someone else than he though more than the fact that he’s related to his girlfriend/wife.

In the end, all I care about is that they’ll be good for each other and that their relationship will be good for the realm.
