You cut up a thing that's alive and beautiful to find out how it's alive and why it's beautiful, and before you know it, it's neither of those things, and you're standing there with blood on your face and tears in your eyes.

im tryin to explain the plot dynamic of golden kamuy in a way that makes sense ok it's like that meme that's like 'the smart kid not understanding how he's losing to me at chess / me eating the pieces when he's not looking' except it's a 4 way chessboard and on one side hijikata's team is the smart kid playing a legitimate chess game while on the other side sugimoto & asirpa are eating the pieces when no one is looking. tsurumi is on the 3rd side eating the pieces when everyone is looking and also biting off people;s fingers . kiroranke was playing on the 4th side but he lost 10 minutes in because asirpa not only ate his pieces but made citatap out of them. ogata is playing the evil advisor gambit for all 4 teams

ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS A KNIGHT...

this was supposed to be just a one off illustration to get the thoughts out of my system, but then I started thinking about medieval politics and warfare and plagues and a castle and home as both a place of refuge, a prison, and a tomb, so perhaps they will end up as ex voto characters as well.

you may say, hey! that rosary looks like it has too many beads! it's a fifteen decade rosary, probably. dominicans are really into marian devotions. it works out.

also. spiral style stair cases. oh boy. it was that unexpectedly more difficult than I originally thought it would be to draw. the more I think about it, the less I understand them, even though I had a million photos of the stairs in front of me while I was drawing it.
