{ klarolineauseason } week 2: all human

Caroline is a journalist-aspiring writer who is dying to tell the story of the infamous Niklaus Mikaelson, the main focus of a series of crimes that painted the city of New Orleans red a decade ago. They gave him three life sentences, but here's the thing - he may be actually innocent.

She just has to talk to him - tell the world his story in a strictly business-like transaction. But the more they interact, the more she finds herself captivated by him, and the truth may actually be scarier than what she thought…

And when Klaus eventually escapes from prison right after she has decided to give up this story, the real nightmare begins.

The Long Ride Home

July 1943

Friday came quickly and Klaus found himself awake before the sun rose. He could not think of anything other than his drive to Richmond and seeing his brothers for  the first time in what felt like an eternity. He was dressed for the day and out the door just as the dusk turned to dawn. Like he promised to Caroline the day before, he met her at the coffee shop before Vickie even had the chance to open it.

Caroline was leaning against the brick wall, a bright and happy smile on her face. Two days before their wedding and she was by far the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Their meeting was short, with nothing more than his lips pressed to her forehead before he climbed into Lillian’s car and drove towards the edge of town, the Mystic Falls welcome sign in the rearview mirror.

Once he reached the jewelers, picking up the wedding bands that he would wear for the remainder of his life, a sense of warm comfort consumed him. Peering down at the silver bands, Caroline’s having a small diamond on hers he couldn’t help but admire just how perfect they were. It was not an elegant and extravagant diamond that his mother wore on her finger nor is it what he would assume he would have bought his wife prior to the war, but he could not wait to slide it on Caroline’s finger.

In the centuries she had been alive, Caroline had never stepped foot outside the Summer Court. Her dreams of what lay beyond their locked prison come to head when she meets a mysterious dark fairy. In an act of betrayal and the tasting of a mysterious fruit, Caroline falls into banishment forever-stuck in the dead of Winter unless she takes the hand of the man who brought her there. Yet, sometimes betrayal takes centuries to heal.

Inspired by Hades and Persephone....but with fairies.

Oh well… who isn’t a sucker for Viking!Klaus fic? I for one am, so… *slids the fic on the table* here’s my attempt at it.

If Heaven’s doors were forever closed to her because of her impure thoughts and actions — she had wanted to kill another person after all, she was hardly innocent — she would make sure to stay as comfortably as possible in hell. If she was fated to fall she’d make one hell of a fall that would make even angels weep in her wake.

Klaus felt as though he was in hell. Being a prince, he was used to all manner of pomp and circumstance, used to the members of the court fawning over him simply because he was next in line to the throne. Yet, standing in front of the few woman Elizabeth had invited to the castle, all of whom had known Caroline since she was a young girl, was pure torture. Most of them were old enough to be his mother while some even his grandmother but they all wanted to have a look at the prince and whisper behind their hands, wondering how Caroline had snatched such an impressive match.

It was maddening, for several reasons. The first being the fact that these women had little to no tact. They couldn't care less that Klaus was within earshot of their whispers and knew everything that they were saying. While if he were to turn his head slightly, and glare at them, he knew that their attitude would change completely. They would pretend that their words were nothing more than flattery when it was obvious they had been anything but moments prior.

It was the hypocritical acts of noble life that drove him insane and it was clear that it was no different near the sea.

This was written for @klarosummerbingo. It was a romance that wasn’t meant to be. But they were too stubborn to fight their connection. When Caroline’s freedom is at stake, she has to make a tough choice — one with unexpected consequences.

Warning: A little bit of Klaroline sexytimes. Also, angsty angst. Violence. And possibly a happy ending if you squint?

Prompt: Sailing

“All the privilege I claim for my own sex, is that of loving longest, when existence or when hope is gone.” ― Jane Austen, Persuasion

It was unseemly — and no doubt if the fine and proper ladies of the town’s social club could see Caroline boldly passing time unchaperoned with such a rogue, news would reach her father all the way in the lighthouse before breakfast. But it wasn’t unseemly. Or, it was, but it was…complicated. Klaus was terribly complicated.

She first met him walking along the rocky shore, the moonlight casting a lovely glow on the sea’s gently rolling waves. He was kneeling in the sand, mindlessly trailing his hands through the water. No. The water went through him. She’d always thought the notion of ghosts and hauntings was foolish talk among the old gossips in the sewing circles, but it was difficult to dismiss such flights of fancy when it studied you so intently. And flashed you a devilish smirk.

Her father always admonished her questioning nature and insisted she quell her sharp tongue, but Klaus encouraged her forthrightness. He was a marvelous resource, and during their long walks, he taught her what he knew of sailing, and distant lands, and pirates. It was thrilling and oh so scandalous to realize she’d become the only confidant of a pirate.

“It was here, wasn’t it,” Caroline hesitantly asked him, “where your ship sank?”

Klaus nodded, a twinge in his tone despite it being such a distant memory. “There wasn’t a lighthouse to guide us back then. Then the storm came, and with a harpy’s vengeance it descended upon the Bloodline, tearing our ship asunder before crashing the remaining pieces against the shore.” A sigh escaped his lips as he confessed, “The crew was nothing more than cut-throat reprobates, but I regret my brother Henrik was aboard. An obstinate lad, he stowed away in the hold, sneaking rations from the pickled herring barrels.”

Caroline fervently wished she could squeeze his hand to offer comfort, but she knew it would be little more than a chill passing over her skin. An almost-touch was somehow worse.

“When the squalls pummeled the ship, I swear I tried to reach him,” he hoarsely cried, “and for a single golden moment, Davy Jones was thwarted and I managed to capture Henrik’s wrist. I grasped with all my might, but the current was too strong and ripped my brother from my grasp, sending him to that devil’s locker.”

Her cheeks were wet; ears ringing with the tale of her fondest friend’s sorrow. “And that’s why you linger?”

“It was.” Klaus paused, his furtive glance full of meaning as he revealed, “But now I have a new reason.”

Fic Rec

Caroline has spent her entire life in one place. She intended to spend the rest of her life in that same place, married to a moderately well off farmer and acting as the mother to his heirs assuming they survived. Small village girl, small village life. She told herself everything was fine. It wasn't enough. She wanted more. She hoped and she prayed for more. Then the invaders came. Now she's not a wife. 'Frilla', she doesn't understand the word but she knows that it describes her new position at his side. As a spoil of war her fate could have been a lot worse.

Debris lingered on the beach below, remains of the storm the night before. It rained and thundered well into the early hours of the morning. Just as the sun was peeking over the horizon, Caroline pulled her shift and dressing gown over her naked body and snuck out of Klaus’s chamber, giving him a small kiss on the lips as she left. Klaus watched her leave through the oak doors, a coy smile tossed over her shoulder before closing it with a quiet snap of the lock.

Klaus laid back in his bed, his head resting upon the feathered pillows and his blonde curls tousled from Caroline’s fingers running through them. The cool white blanket covered his naked hips, pressing against his marked thighs where the mixture of their several sessions of love-making rested. He knew that he would have to clean himself up before dressing for the day if he wanted to be comfortable, but there was something alluring about the idea of Caroline’s scent marking his skin throughout the day. Perhaps it was the wolf that lingered through his veins but he could not help but feel pride in the fact that he had claimed Caroline. He wrote his essences all over her the night before, several times over, and there was no mistaking that she was his mate, just as he was hers.

With a satisfied grin, Klaus pulled himself from the bed and swung his naked legs over the side and stretched. He headed towards the basin of cold water and cleaned himself as best as he could, removing any hit of what happened the night before from the skin between his legs. With each stroke, Klaus could not help but think of what it had been like to have Caroline in his arms, his eyes wandering to the four-poster bed in the middle of the room. He wondered if Caroline was experiencing the same distracted routine. Was she bathing herself, washing his mark from her body and feeling every sensitive part of her body?

Best KC fics on ff?

Oh dear, there are so many fabulous Klaroline writers and fics out there it’s difficult to choose or slap on a label of “best.” Someone in this fandom is always pedaling out new writing and no less fabulous stories/AUs so much as to leave me in a perpetual state of reader-awe and writer-envy.

In short, my favorites list continues to grow and grow!

Here some of my favorite multichapter fics off the top of my head :

(**Some of these are still in-progress or incomplete**)

-Timeless and Changeless by marvelouskatie

What an imaginative and convoluted time travel AU! It’s so much fun to see Klaus and Caroline meet and fall in love in a different place, under different circumstances. They’re the first two KC fics I ever read, and they subsequently dragged me down the rabbit hole of shipping, Tumblr interaction, and eventually, into writing my own fic.
I love all of Katie’s KC AU’s, though, and I totally recommend you check out “The Perfect Unplanned” and “Everybody Talks” as well.

-Inertia Overcome by avari20

I just recently re-read this and just omfg! She writes a wonderful dark and possessive enigmatic!Klaus with a soft spot for Caroline, and only Caroline. If you’re anything like me and love Hades and Persephone tropes, but haven’t read this yet, you gotta.
I repeat–YOU G O T T A.

-Green Card by a-little-blonde-distraction

A fake/forced marriage + Roommates AU. It’s a romcom lover’s dream, honestly, so in what universe could I ever say no to this? *whispers: there isn’t one*
This is a gritty and twisted, violent, evocative mates AU and 3-shot. It drips of everything carnal and visceral that supernatural creatures are comprised of at their core, or should be. Klaus is delectably monstrous while Caroline’s a sweet force to be reckoned with.

-Renegade Knights by Biana Delacroix

Elle is 100000000% to blame for my unapologetic Koroline brotp obsession. She literally polluted me with love for them with this this fic. I’ll never be over it. Nope, nope, noooope!
It’s a Charmed AU with all of my fave romantic TVD ships - Klaroline, Kalijah, and Kennett. And the magical hijink + witchy-ness + Cristy’s writing combo makes my heart so, so happy.
Who needs Hope when we can have adorable kindergarten-aged Henrik instead? There’s lots of Mikaelsons, secrets, cuteness, and sexual tension. And Dee’s determined to weave some angst in there to make us all hurt in the best. way. possible.
A cross between reincarnation, memory loss, and Hades and Persephone. My Greek-mythology-loving ass is showing again, but the world-building and backstory is beautifully imaginative.

More than anything, however, I read loads and LOADS of Klaroline drabbles/fic from the lovely writers of this fandom on Tumblr. Aside from those I’ve already mentioned, I always squee when I come across stuff by:

I’m gonna stop now before I tag every writer who was or is in this fandom. Just know that if your name isn’t here it’s not because I haven’t enjoyed your writing at some point or don’t appreciate your contribution to this fandom–believe me, I have and I do–it’s only that I’m trying to save myself from carpal tunnel this evening lol.

Anyway, what I mean to say is this: YOU ALL ROCK MY SOCKS. Thank you for inspiring me, encouraging me, and entertaining me with all that you do. *covers you in hearts*

Klaroline fanfic update: A Pregnant Pause

Hi! I’m finally getting back to my Klaroline multi-chap, A Pregnant Pause! Here’s a quick peek:

Chapter 23:

They were doing Worry. And also WORRY. Caroline was watching scary supernatural Vikings work themselves into a Texas-sized tizzy. She waved off their unspoken concerns, weakly telling them, “I’m fine. The vomit’s mostly from breathing in Tyler’s pretentious cologne.” Although the rotten stench of blood hung heavy in the air, making her heave once again. How could a freshly killed corpse already stink of decay?

As she shakily rose to her feet, she frowned, thinking that would at least get a pity laugh, but they seemed frozen in fear. From the pained looks on their faces, she realized they were still afraid of her. Of what she must think of them now that she knew the truth. It broke her heart to see how quickly they’d all tucked away their monsters, looking shame-faced as they refused to meet her gaze for more than a few seconds.

"I don't want the details," she replied quickly. Again, she pulled back so she could look up at him. "But I am kinda curious. Without going into the specifics… What did you do to him?" She bit down on her lower lip as anxiety thrummed through her veins and he had to resist the urge to pull it from between her teeth. He never wanted to see her anxious, hated seeing her less than joyously happy.
"I did as you asked, sweetheart," he replied gently, trying to reassure her as he stroked her cheekbone reverently. "Damon will run and he will hide and he will never return to Mystic Falls. In time, he'll forget about Elena, and about you. He'll even forget about his own brother." Caroline looked down guiltily, again chewing on her lower lip. Klaus released her cheek to tilt her chin up to face him. She sucked in a deep breath at the hybrid gold bleeding into his irises, the ice in his voice chilling her to the bone. "But he'll remember me."

Klaroline fanfic update: A Pregnant Pause

Hi! In between working on my stuff for the Klaroline AU Season 2021 Event, I’m starting the next chapter of A Pregnant Pause

Here’s a quick peek:

Chapter 22

A pebble softly splashed in a narrow puddle, echoing throughout the small tunnel and Caroline bit on her tongue until she drew blood. Stop jumping at shadows, she scolded herself. There’s worse waiting for you if you fuck this up. The baby gave her bladder a swift kick, and Caroline nodded in agreement. Move your ass. She’d been following that tiny speck of light ever since she first realized it led to the secret tunnel Klaus once told her about. She would save herself. And then kick Klaus’ ass for lying about this supernatural soap opera that he and his siblings apparently ran.

The passage sharply narrowed, panic overtaking her when she felt the rough scrape of rock against her swollen belly. She wasn’t going to fit. All of this was for nothing. Holding her breath, she tried to calm her frenzied thoughts. Slide your body. Test the widest part first. You can Tetris your way out of this bitch.

Conscious of how even the tiniest noise echoed throughout the caves until it sounded like a freight train, Caroline was cautious with her movements. What if they could hear her? This could be part of their sick game — letting her have the tiniest bit of hope all over again, only to be waiting on the other side to grab her. Doesn’t matter. Keep going

Just posted the full chapter - FINALLY - thanks for all the encouragement to get this one done! You can read and review here:
