Quintessence Sensitive: S8 Rewrite

Episode 2: "Shadows"

(This next part of the episode would cut directly to Honerva's story and flashbacks.

It would follow closely to the original episode, but this written part would begin right after Honerva finds the Altean Colony.)

Honerva appears before Oriande with her ship boarded with the Alteans and her selected druids. Again, she notes with a bit of caution as not even a hint of resistance appears from the legendary Guardian of Oriande. She wonders again, how it was possible that the White Lion simply vanished when she first entered Oriande.

It had seemed so long ago...but she remembered watching with gritted teeth as the white beast, the one legend told was supposed to test those worthy of its magic, growled fiercely. It seemed to look not into her soul - but passed it...passed her being - into someone else’s. Like the beast was seeing not her, but someone entirely different. Then, in what she thought would be a fight for her life, the beast charged - then in a blinding flash of light - vanished.  

She had taken what she had come for - the magic of the alchemists. Though it was through force and destruction, it was hers.  But the White Lion had taken its secrets with it. Wherever it had gone.

She shakes the memory from her head, feeling a tinge of anger flare in her at what she believes was an escaped piece of alchemy she could never have. But in a moment, they are approaching the sanctuary of the alchemists.  

Now was not the time to dwell on the past - now was the time to render a new future.

A future in which she would have her son back.

With the full power of the Alteans, the druids, and her own magic, Honerva begins the ritual to summon open the veil and retrieve her son.

It’s a long and grueling process, and she realizes with no hint of remorse as two of her druids fall, lifeless, to the ground in the process. When the light fades, she feels the pull of awe and dread all at once claw at her entire being. In all of its glowing, twisted glory, lies the Sincline ship.

Her son’s greatest creation.

She hears the gasps and cries of her son’s name echo throughout as the Alteans recognize it, and before she knows it, the Empress has already begun a rapid sprint towards the giant machine before them. She feels the power of the Quintessence still absorbed into the ship crawl through her, and she shivers from the powerful, yet dreadful pull of magic as she comes upon the front of the machine. It takes little effort to release the door to the front of the Sincline, and Honerva can already feel a sickening feeling crawling across her skin as she makes her way to the cockpit in the darkened chambers.

The darkness flooding the room is almost overwhelming as she stops in front of the seat of the pilot.

There isn’t a sound. Not a word. Not a breath as she stares blankly in front of her.

There he lies.

Her son. Everything she has worked for - is there in front of her. A mix of biological and mechanical vines intertwines around the entirety of the space, over, under - and upon the body of her son.

Dead.

“No…”

The word is but a breath, but it seems to echo through the silence of the chamber.

“No.” She says again, and this time it's as loud as an explosion. “This - they will not TAKE you from me!” She screeches, she can feel the darkness of the entity crawling up beneath her skin, flooding into her hands as she suddenly launches forward, taking both sides of Lotor’s face in her hands.

All at once, she feels the darkness explode from beneath her palms, the energy almost painful as she pours it into the cold skin beneath her. The rapid warmth gatherers there, and her gritted teeth clench harder as she dives into the dark entity, commanding it to cling to Lotor’s soul, bring him back from the void - back to her.

For a brief moment, she feels life in her son. She feels the essence of his soul beneath her hands. But then, the darkness she commands enters his soul, and begins to worm itself within. It feels entirely wrong. Her son’s soul is not as hardened as she had believed - as Zarkon’s was - she feels the light from Lotor’s being rapidly dim into a twisted darkness, a darkness that’s alive, but that shrouds the light.

She hasn’t a moment to think about what she’s done until she suddenly jerks back, aware of her presence, aware of who she’s looking down upon. She pulls her hands away, breathing heavily as she waits on bated breath for any response.

Her heart nearly stops when Lotor’s hand twitches at his side.

Then his head moves.

“Lotor…” She breathes, reaching out a tentative hand.

Then his eyes open.

She cannot hide the gasp that escapes from her mouth as she rapidly pulls back, eyes wide with a mixture of fear and shock.

What was once attentive, intelligent, and beautiful deep purple eyes, are now glowing eerily yellow - they are Zarkon’s eyes. Unlockable, unreadable, and entirely frightening.

Her nightmares had come true.

Episode 1 Rewrite: "Launch Date"

Quintessence Sensitive Keith AU - S8 Rewrite:

Keith can't deny he feels shaken after the strange, sick feeling that had washed over him. Unsure of what to think of it, he brushes it off for the time being and follows Allura and Romelle to the conference room, where the rest of the Garrison has gathered for their meeting.

He finds himself half listening, and is thankful he was paying close enough attention to Shiro when a question is directed at him. He shakes himself out of his inattentiveness, but it wasn't quick enough for Shiro to miss. Keith sees the exact moment Shiro's eyes narrow at him in suspicion for a split second before he continues on to ask Allura about Luca. He feels the slight sickening feeling return at the mention of the name, and he takes a breath to settle himself as he listens.

Before he knows it, Shiro is wrapping up the meeting and everyone is standing to their feet, likely to eagerly take up the Captain of the Atlas on his orders to relax for the day before the launch.

"Keith,"

Keith stops at the familiar voice and comfortable weight on his shoulder. He turns to look up to Shiro with a quirked brow.

Grey eyes are bright as he speaks. "I just have a few things to go over with Sam and Iverson, but perhaps we could...meet up later?"

Keith's smile broadens involuntarily, and he finds himself nodding - perhaps too eagerly.

It garners a slight chuckle, so it's still a win. "Great! I'll be done in a few minutes." Shiro smiles, patting Keith's shoulder.

Keith smirks, "Sure. See ya then, 𝘈𝘥𝘮𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘭."

Shiro lets out a snort and rolls his eyes as Keith chuckles and turns to leave.

"Wait - where will you be?" Shiro calls after him.

Keith smirks to himself, waving a hand over his shoulder. "You'll know where to find me."

He can FEEL Shiro's grin on his back as he leaves.

Lance continues to stand there as if he's caught them red-handed doing...something, Keith thinks.

The amount of confusion passing over the group leaves them all silent as they collectively try to decide what to ask first.

It seems like an entire minute passes before a small beeping interrupts the awkward silence. 

Shiro sighs and looks down at his datapad, reading the message before guiltily looking up at Keith. 

“Can’t even letcha take your own advice, huh?” Keith snorts. 

“Seems not...” The Admiral sighs and passes another strange glance in Lance’s direction before he stands to his feet and turns to Keith, a sincere look on his face. “We’ll finish this up later, okay?” He promises, and Keith nods in understanding. Shiro smiles in relief, “Okay.” 

He takes a breath and turns to Lance, “See you, Lance - Oh! And uh - good luck tonight.” The Captain passes him a sympathetic look while he eyes the outfit, but his kind eyes brighten a second later. “I’m happy for you.” He offers a pat on the paladin’s back before he turns to make his way down the Black Lion. 

Lance lets out a small puff of air, but his face instantly turns mischievous when he turns his attention back on Keith, eyebrows waggling. “Finish up later, huh? Sorry for interrupting...whatever that was.” 

Keith doesn’t have a clue what he’s talking about, and stares up at him in blatant confusion. 

For so many reasons. 

“What the heck are you wearing, Lance?”

No it's not a dumb question! I'm going to explain further on what exactly it means to KEITH - but I think overall the basic understanding of Quintessence Sensitive means that Keith has some sort of connection to Quintessence that makes him highly aware of it - especially when it's concentrated. For example, Keith was able to "sense some kind of energy telling him to search" when he was searching the caves of the Blue Lion. His intense connection to Red, his ability to summon his bayard from great distances, whatever the heck happened to his hand when he fought that druid and so on. That's basically what it means! And in my comic that will all be explained WHY he has it and what exactly it means. :)

So I've gotten an influx of new followers lately because of my Quintessence Sensitive Keith au (I think?) and I just want to say HELLO and welcome to my Voltron trash blog!

Quick update on my QS comic! I'm starting a project for it that's bigger than I originally planned. So when I thought there would be 3 parts to that comic I fooled myself. There's going to be a lot...lot more. I should have more info and the first bit of it posted sometime next week. Just updating those on tumblr! I post more frequently on Twitter so follow me there for more updates and sneak peeks! :P
