So apparently today is writers appreciation day. Every single writer who sees this, I appreciate you, I thank you for writing. whether you do it for yourself only, or you show it to others too. Whether you write every day, or once in months (or even years). Whether you write as a hobby, or are serious in pursuing it as a career. Whether you have written and published books and have a huge fan following, or you have just seventeen followers in a corner of tumblr. Whether you write because of the joy it brings to you, or the comfort it brings to others, or for both. Whether you write beautiful poetry, or funny coffee shop au's (people need both, I promise). Every single writer who sees this, I appreciate you, because all writers deserve appreciation. There is atleast one person who loves your writing (thats you! You should be the biggest fan of your work) and if you show it to the world, I promise there will be many more who love it. May the words flow as you will them to, and may you remember the highly specific word when you need it. Just imagine a world without Muslims. Now I think you probably meant, JUST IMAGINE A WORLD WITHOUT TERRORISTS. And then I would agree, the world would definitely be a better place without those pieces of filth. But to hold a whole group responsible for the actions of a few is ignorant and racist. No one would ever expect Christians or White people to be held responsible for the acts of Timothy McVeigh (Oklahoma bombing) or Anders Breivik (Norway killing), or the gun man that shot Congresswoman Giffords in head, wounded 12 and killed 6 people, and rightly so because they had nothing to do with those incidents! Just like the rest of the 1.5 billion Muslims have nothing to do with this incident!

We Need to Talk About Engagement

No, I don’t mean that step you take in the pursuit of marrying someone.

I mean interaction. Messages and reblogs.

A couple months ago, there were posts circulating about how the like to ratio reblog was unfair because likes do not give writers the opportunity to be seen where reblogs do. Once enough people reblogged this or added to it, engagement went way up and the ratios were better and people were sending messages and replying to fics about how much they loved them!

Then, it seems, everyone went “I did my part” and gave up on it.

Engagement seems to be at an all-time-low; the like to reblog ratio seems to be gapped even wider now, people are hardly sending messages in, and heck people are even reading fics without even LIKING them.

I thought it was me at first and that everyone grew bored of my writing, but then my friends said they weren’t gaining much attention either or they were no longer receiving many asks. And then posts about it started popping up about how engagement was down 50%.

Why? What is so bad about reblogging a fic or replying to it? We write for ourselves, but the sweet comments and messages make it worth putting out there for people. Seeing people simply like it or pay no mind to it is very discouraging.

Here are some things you can do to help engagement go up that are barely any effort on your part and are very appreciated:
