another question haha - so when oliver and elio are in rome and they’re dancing in the streets at night, do you think they’re drunk? because then when oliver is dancing with the old lady, elio throws up and i couldn’t tell if he just felt nauseous because oliver was with someone else or if he drank too much. thank you!

Avatar

ohh i think they are drunk af lmao so basically elio throws up because he’s drunk and because it got worse after they danced and spinned lmao

Avatar

In the film they aren’t in Rome, they are in Bergamo.

And yes they are drunk, which is why they are acting so silly, and why afterward before they kiss Elio looks almost on drugs.

I think you should read the book

13 Italian things in Call Me By Your Name you probably missed

(Why does this sound like a BuzzFeed title?)

I watched Call Me By Your Name with a friend from the US, and she brought to my attention that I was always picking up on a lot of small details that non-Italian viewers like her inevitably miss out on.

CMBYN is not your usual postcard-of-Italy movie. I’ve seen tons of foreign movies or shows set in Italy that look more like a Hollywood-made advertisement for my country rather than a true portrayal of it (remember Eat, Pray, Love?). CMBYN instead felt real. It felt like everyday reality in northern Italy, despite being set more than 30 years ago. The director and the production being Italian is probably the reason behind it.

So here’s a list of small details in CMBYN that you can only pick up if you’re familiar with Italy and Italian culture (with Wikipedia links if you want more information):

Yes yes!

Also:

-Elio’s Invicta backpack

- apricot juice!!! I always drank apricot juice in Italy growing up

-the lady that Oliver dances with towards the end in Bergamo is from Emilia Romagna (I can tell from her accent :) )

Hi! Was wondering if you knew where to find the backpack and similar shorts that Elio has. Fell in love w that backpack and have been looking for shorts like those forever (the bowling alley carpet looking ones lol) but don’t know what to search

Hey! I unfortunately cannot find the match to the backpack Elio has, however, if you are interested in the style, it is a rucksack backpack. I searched for it for awhile but couldn’t find any decent matches. I guarantee you can find next to no exact matches to the clothes either boys have. However there are a few exceptions.

Now, for the shorts, you’re in luck! I found a ton of similar shorts! I searched “80s vintage shorts funky” lol

Here are my best matches!

I also thought these were nice too x

(id hurry if you’re interested in buying because they only have one pair of each)

warning that most if not all are used, which is typical for authentic vintage clothes such as these

I hope I helped xxxx anyone else feel free to add on ✹✹

Elio’s backpack is from Invicta which is a brand that was SUPER popular in the 80s and 90s - we ALL had that brand of backpack when we went to school in Italy. It might be difficult to find as it’s pretty vintage but I think I saw a picture going around on twitter? Sorry I can’t be of more help.

I’m so confused as to why Elio regretted sleeping with Oliver the first time. If you understand would you mind explaining please?

The way I understood it is that Elio’s momentary regret came from him feeling shame of the “act” that they did together. (I say momentary bc it definitely wasn’t present afterwards, him even saying “I didn’t regret any of it, not the shame, not the secrecy
”) Elio is still not sure this is what he wanted, he even says something along the lines of “I’m not sure I want to go ahead with this, but I need to know and better with you than anyone else”

Avatar

I don’t agree. It’s pretty clear in the book that Elio is upset the day after because he thought that once he slept with Oliver, he would have gotten what he wanted and could move on. Instead, upon waking up he realised that he still wanted Oliver; that his crush hadn’t just ‘gone away’ after he had him.

So he was upset, because he realised what he felt was deeper than he thought and therefore more complicated.

If he felt shame he wouldn’t have so easily agreed to Oliver giving him a blowjob not even 2 hours later, he wouldn’t have pursued Oliver later in the day.

“To put our gaze upon their lovemaking would have been a sort of unkind intrusion. I think that their love is in all things, so when we gaze towards the window and we see the trees, there is a sense of witnessing that. I refuse with strong firmness that I was coy in not showing that, because I think that Oliver and Elio and Armie and TimothĂ©e, the four of them displayed a very strong intimacy and closeness in so many ways and it was enough.”

YALL

The way that not only the director, but the actors, are conflating themselves with the characters on a continuos basis is fascinating. Luca can’t keep Armie/Timmy separate from Oliver/Elio, and Timmy can’t either what with the self inserts and switching out Armie for Oliver (“who wouldn’t fall in love with Armie Hammer?!” And “we fell in love”) and not to mention the ridiculously romantic way they describe their meeting (chemistry within seconds, like a scene from a movie
dudes my dudes ) It truly is as if the border between real life and fiction was just obliterated. I’m not sure as an actor how you deal with that, especially when it was such a transformative experience like they seem to all think it was. Just me, an outsider, thinking about it, well it fucks me up. It’s a bit worrisome only because I’m not sure it’s entirely healthy? No wonder why they said Armie was acting out and withdrawing as the film came to an end. I truly think they became these characters (Armie saying he basically became Oliver and he liked it
combine that with like not wanting to leave Crema and it’s like danger bells are ringing in my head ) and they liked it and now what? I think for now it’s fine, like they are still in this little movie promo bubble and they all see each other a ton, for promotion and awards and such, but like Armie said, after this the real world kicks in. What then? Remember when Timmy said he needed like a detox period after filming? Well he needed a detox period and he had it, but then the movie promotion kicked off and in a way it’s almost like a relapse. With some of the things he’s said that make me wonder if he’s a bit, uh, emotionally compromised (aka almost crying at the Chiara dance scene wtf sorry that’s just not a normal reaction), I am thinking he’s gonna need another detox period after the oscars and such. I know they are actors and professionals but this seems to have really affected them in ways I’m not sure I’ve seen other actors go on about. It feels very powerful and raw to me and I guess I’m just curious how they are gonna deal when the real world does kick back in. I think at least now I understand how Heath Ledger was so affected by playing the joker that it totally fucked him up. I used to think that was a bullshit story, and I’m sure there was more to it than that, but it makes more sense to me now. You take actors, who are supposed to be able to access emotions easily, and throw them in an intense situation, and sometimes shit is gonna happen. Be it in a negative or positive way. Now I’m not saying these guys are gonna meet the same fate as Heath Ledger, I’m just saying that now I totally understand how things can get all entangled and messy. Now maybe I am wrong here, but I DO think Armie and Timmy have some level of feelings for each other from this, feelings I’m not sure are strictly the brotherly platonic kind they like to spout. And you may disagree, but I’m just kind of fascinated on how this will all play out. It may come to nothing in the end, or get messy, but I just hope no one gets hurt. Sorry for the rambling Idek

Why does this always happen why do we always have to think the actors want each other for real

I don’t know which ending caused me more pain, the ending of the book or the movie?

Avatar

I guess the book ending is kind of more painful because it’s so final.

It’s 20 years after the summer they spent together. Oliver is married and has children. He and Elio chose to live a coma and a parallel life and the decision to live seperately, to lose each other, was made. There’s no chance for them to go back.

The movie ending is still kind of open?

They’re still in the present after that summer and it doesn’t jump to 20 years later. We know that in that moment they’re going to make that decision to live speretaley but we don’t know for sure if they’ll really do it. We don’t know if Oliver really gets married or if there’s still a chance they’ll find back to each other. That’s why I think the movie ending is a bit less painful but really-

It still breaks my heart into a million of pieces and I don’t feel myself whenever I watch the movie.

I think Luca isn’t going to do a sequel only to leave them separated. If there is a sequel, they will reunite and you can bet Luca the romantic will want to see them kiss again. So he will have to change the storyline in the book - and I very much hope he does. While poetic and beautifully written, id love to see a version of the story where they don’t give up on their love - and I think Luca does too.

Is it wrong to actually be glad cmbyn was leaked? Been anticipating it for so long but living in a conservative country means it will never be shown here, ever... Still gonna drop my coins for the digital release soon though😂

No one in this blog is here to judge or tell personal opinions. We just hope that everyone who has a chance to support the movie at a cinema (or through any form that is legal) does so because not supporting can hurt the film so much and that includes the possible sequel.

PLEASE GO AND WATCH CALL ME BY YOUR NAME AT THE CINEMA IF IT’S SHOWING IN YOUR COUNTRY.

IF YOU DON’T SUPPORT IT, DON’T COMPLAIN WHEN THE SEQUEL DOESN’T GET MADE.

I still think Moana deserved an Oscar for this part

To me, the moral of Moana is that only women can help other women heal from male violence.

The movie starts with the idea that the male god who wronged Te Fiti must be the one to heal her. This seems to make a certain sort of intuitive sense in that I think we all believe that if you do something wrong you should try to make it right. But how does he try to right it? Through more violence. Of course that failed.

It was only when another woman, Moana, saw past the “demon of earth and fire” that the traumatized Te Fiti had become (what a good metaphor for trauma, right?) and met her with love instead of violence that she was able to heal. Note that they do the forehead press before Moana restores the heart, while Te Fiti is still Te Kā. Moana doesn’t wait for her beautiful island goddess to appear in all her green splendor before greeting and treating her as someone deserving of love.

Moana is only able to restore the heart because Te Kā reveals her vulnerability and allows Moana to touch her there. Maui and his male violence could only ever have resulted in more ruin.

this is exactly what I was trying to say and you put it beautifully. @i-want-cheese This is why the scene makes me tear up every damn time. Women’s honest, ugly reaction to trauma is almost never even depicted in films, let alone honored the way it is in Moana. Te Fiti doesn’t have to “rise above” being violated before she’s allowed to heal. Moana sees her and says

I know your name They have stolen the heart from inside you But this does not define you

She utterly accepts Te Fiti’s rage, her fear, her lashing out at anyone who comes near the remains of her ravaged body island. Female ugliness isn’t punished, it’s mourned and loved. What an indescribably comforting moment.

My favorite part of this movie

I just cried
