The thing I keep coming back to, with all the *gestures expansively* is that real life doesn't have peaceful epilogues.

Every single win has to be defended. Forever. I'm sorry. It sucks. The Nazis lost until they stopped losing. The US had abortion rights, and then 50 years later it didn't. Empires fall, and then they invade other countries again. Oppressive regimes are overthrown and replaced with other oppressive regimes. You will never finish the work etc etc etc. Which is why it's so fucking important to be able to acknowledge and celebrate progress, when it happens. The people who came before you didn't put in all that work for nothing, and you aren't, either. You can't save it all for the Ultimate Victory because there is never going to be an Ultimate Victory. There's no such thing as a time when everything is good, and ours shall not be the commune of Heaven.

nearly all libraries have a ghost, but medical libraries frequently have a ghost and a skeleton

i’ve been reminded that most people don’t know about the ghost

‘ghost reading’ means collecting usage stats for books which are used within the library, without being checked out (which would automatically generate usage data).

This is often done by checking out the book to a dummy user account belonging to The Library Ghost before it’s reshelved. (After being returned ofc. Ghosts read very fast.)

Due to ghost reading, most libraries ask that you do not return books to the shelves yourself, even if you’re confident of where they go - there will instead be somewhere they’ll ask you to leave them (or just leave them out on a surface somewhere) so they can be collected and ghost read.

I knew about leaving books out after you read them, but I didn't know about the ghost account thing! Thank you for explaining that 👍

ppl are always writing characters doing dumb shit like roasting a fresh-caught rabbit over an open flame instead of making a stew with that thing. great now you’re letting all the fat drip down into the fire as it cooks, wasting calories and flavor as well as causing the flame to flare up = inconsistent heat source,… when you could be maximizing the nutritional value of small game by making a soup or stew. Come on

This. :)

rabbit is sort of infamous for a lack of fat (you can starve to death on a diet of rabbit because it's so lean) so i'm not sure the flaring from dripping fat would be a problem, but

"Tell your favorite creators that you like their work, people usually enjoy things silently, but hate tends to be loud"

This is a phrase I just heard from Dnd shorts that captures perfectly why I often try to make the effort of commenting on posts and telling people that I enjoy their work and why Even to small creators, I advice everyone to make the extra effort to tell them, I can guarantee it makes all the difference in the world, it's not cringy or obnoxious, it'll just brighten someone's day

oh my god two words in that just UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE

All hope is lost so quickly I can’t stop laughing.

danish tv is the best thing ever

“Okay :(”

He went straight to Acceptance. He didn’t even go through the five stages of grief. He just started at Acceptance.

I can translate for anyone wondering what he’s saying. The dialogue roughly goes something like

“Hopefully the owner of the car behind me will next time consider if-oh shit. Okay.”

I relate to this so much! I too occasionally find myself wondering what the original reactions of classic stories were like.

I have to tell you that watching the BBC 1995 Pride and Prejudice was a LOT like this.

I'm not saying P&P wasn't a big deal before that - obviously it was! - but it wasn't a Pop Culture big deal the way it is now. If we had had Tumblr, only the lit geeks would have talked about it 9n tumblr. It was not the first story you thought of when someone said Period Drama. Austen as a whole has had a HUGE resurgence since the 90s and that production in particular.

I hadn't read it. My friends hadn't read it. My sister and my dad hadn't read it. I think my mum may have as a teenager, but if so, she didn't mention it.

When it started, it was just another Period Drama, but we were swiftly INVESTED. We were IN WICKHAM'S CORNER. He was so handsome and hard done by! Darcy was such a twat! Elizabeth was so Right and Correct in all her opinions.

Mr Darcy as a heart throb wasn't a phenomenon. No one had seen Colin Firth dive into a lake. Wet men in period shirts was not a code for that scene (which isn't in the book, but afterwards our English Lit teacher had us watch it in class).

We were all fucking floored. This is EXACTLY how we responded.

I am telling you reading/watching P&P now is a different experience to what it was in 1995 as we waited week to week to watch the next ep.

Imagine spending Several Weeks fully in love with Mr Wickham - completely oblivious to the fact that he's a dastardly cad! - secretly hoping that Lucy runs away and has an unfavourable marriage with him, and then Darcy unloads ALL THAT in one mind-blowing episode.

I am telling you I fully believe it was an experience more akin to what ye oldie Original Readers must have had than is available to most readers encountering either the book or an adaptation now.

high school theater is so funny cus like. one year you can have the most cunt wrenching performance of Phantom Of The Opera ever brought to life by 17 year olds and the next year. a really mediocre rendition of Seussical The Musical.

those of you in shock about saying cunt wrenching to be fair I DID forget that its something I only use regularly in my head but to be even MORE fair. a good Phantom Of The Opera performance IS cunt wrenching like what else do you want me to call it

Spellcasters hate this fact but if you just stick your fingers in their mouth while they're casting a spell with a verbal component it's literally more effective than a counter spell.

This also works with pinning their hands against the wall when they're trying to use somnatic components.

Basically if you make out sloppy style while pressed against a wall the spellcasters can't do anything

I will never forgive CinemaSins for how they contributed to the decline in media literacy in the last ten years and you can tell them I said that if you want. Not everything that is unexplained in media is plothole. Not every mistake is worthy of scorn and if a twist is visible prior to it hitting, that is not a bad thing. Your trivial nitpicking has set back the human ability to discuss media at least 30 years
