Today in “Nintendo is a bunch of sweaty corporatist goons who want to be Disney so fucking badly but never will be”:

Nintendo creates artificial scarcity of its products, and the medium of digital games is especially susceptible to this. They make no effort to make any significant portion of their massive catalog of previous-generation games available and accessible to the public, at best only selecting piecemeal titles here and there restarting every console generation but now seems to have abandoned even that. And they release products like the NES and SNES Classic because they know this, they know their games are in such high demand because they don’t make them available on a wide scale. And when they do make these products, guess what? They’re sold in extraordinarily limited quantities and if you don’t act fast you can only buy them from scalpers.

To think Nintendo is doing this any of this unintentionally is just closing your eyes to the facts. It’s obvious Nintendo tries to create a mystique around their products by holding them back, just like Disney used to do with its “Disney Vault” scheme of making old movies limited time purchases.

Is it really strange people turn to ROMs and emulators for these games? If they’re not available, what else are people supposed to do if they want to play these games? Pay exorbitant multi-hundred dollar prices to get the original versions of the game used and scrape up money to try to find a functioning old console to play them? The money isn’t even going to Nintendo at that point. This holds especially pertinent for games on systems near the middle of Nintendo’s history like the N64 and Gamecube which have seen the least distribution since their original releases. Nintendo’s paltry system of remaking a handful of titles like Wind Waker and Twilight Princess and then selling them at or near current gen full price absolutely is not enough and is more abuse of the fact they hold such a tight control over the games in their catalog.

And even putting aside games people want to play for fun, there’s the entirely separate issue of historical preservation! Taking down massive ROM sites and forcing the people running them to pay millions of dollars they can’t afford means less and less places old games are cataloged and preserved. Not just the big titles, but every little game that came out during that time period, disposable or high quality, popular or obscure–how will we ever study our own cultural history if we do not know it? There’s a much wider discussion to be had about digital preservation in general in the internet age but Nintendo is just obliterating huge swaths of their own history for short term financial gain.

Twelve million dollars is just a tiny drop in the bucket for the multibillion dollar multinational corporation Nintendo but will almost certainly ruin the lives of this couple who engaged in defying shortsighted capitalist greed. Please stop thinking of this company as anything other than another than another soulless ball of wealth generation for a particular elite. Nintendo clearly employs many talented and creative artists who aren’t to blame for stuff like this but that shouldn’t distract from the complete lack of morality underpinning the institution as a whole. Fuck Nintendo.

Guess who finally finished Life is Strange?! :’D  Bonus question: Guess who my favorite character was?

Years after someone woke me from my nap in the art studio on campus to ask if I was cosplaying Chloe Price (because I was wearing a blue wig and a beanie becauase my real hair was being especially difficult that day) and me not knowing who the hell they were talking about, I finally played the damn game all the way through and boy was it an emotional rollercoaster. xD Now all I need to do is make a real/non-closet cosplay of Chloe and have my sister take polaroid pictures of me and we’ll be all set! >:D

Car Stolen at EFNW

Hello everyone, I’m sorry that I don’t have any new art to share with you all. Unfortunately my tablet inside my car, along with most of my worldly possessions were stolen Sunday night at EFNW. The hotel, the con staff, and the police have been very kind in helping with this situation.

I am asking that if any pony con goers or anyone else who may have seen anything suspicious between the hours of 6PM Sunday and 8AM Monday at the doubletree hotel by the seatac that they contact the seattle police immediately at (206) 625-5011. The car was parked on the north side of building 3. It is a dark grey 96 Honda civic, 2 door, with a Wyoming license plate. The passenger side mirror is tan.

Thank you for any kind thoughts, reblogs, retweets: https://twitter.com/viwrastupr/status/864546103647027202 or information you may have.

I know that my friends are wanting to put together a gofundme, but at the moment I’m still holding out hope that something may be found. The car is fully insured but as I am moving and between homes for renter’s insurance, my possessions were not. Not that they were worth much, as most of what has been lost is largely sentimental in value.

When you fit everything you own into a single car, you realize what objects have value to you, and those are not the expensive or the flashy things, but what is most associated with your memories:

The clock which sat on my grandfather’s mantle.

The table he made himself before he passed.

The key to a long torn down shed at my childhood home.

A small green rock I found in a riverbed as a kid.

A note and signature from a voice actor who perked up my spirits on a bad day.

Birthday cards from my grandmother, father, mother, and aunt.

A letter opener purchased on a school trip.

A heavy sheepskin coat which, unpractical as it would be to ever use, smelled like home.

Not the merchandise I sell, the prints, scrolls, and cups, not the money, not the art books, tablet, or clothes. Not even the car. I don’t want any of that. I would like my memories back. In time, without those little nothings, I am afraid of forgetting how I became who I am today. Forgetting my family. My friends. My experiences.

Please, if you know anything, please, speak up.

The Most Broken Current Cartoon Character

I always thought the new and original characters were the most broken characters like

Steven Quartz Unvierse has to live the fact that his mom, Rose Quartz, have commited some dark acts in the past

Star Butterfly lost almost everything in season 2

Marceline Abadeer lost her mother, her first and true friend, Simon lost his sanity for wearing the crown too much, and what’s worst that she has to become what she hates the most, a vampire

Ice King lost his sanity and forgotten everything he once knew himself

But probably the current most broken cartoon character out of all of them is Samurai Jack

What makes this man such a broken figure is he used to have a strong will that keep him moving, always had hope that he’ll find his way home, and always fight for justice. Even though it seem bad at first, but he finds another way, like he always had.

But now, after 50 years without aging alone, he lost himself in this forsaken time. He lost his honor as a samurai, lost his way to what to fight for and lost his faith to find his way back to the past

Every time portal is destroyed

He lost his sword, the only weapon that could defeat Aku

Really horrible PTSD

And what’s worst is he thinks of performing Harakiri (suicide)

Out of all cartoon characters in today world, I find Samurai Jack, the most broken out of all cartoon characters and deserve the most hugs

Dev Update – Feb. 2017

January came and went and along with it several flu strains and other illnesses affected various members of the team, including your friendly update poster @toastyjustice. Having taken the time to recover, we’re back with a quick development update prior to showing off the stuff we had hoped to last month.

Alpha 109 is scheduled to be done soon, as late as middle of next week. Bug fixes, platform frame rate improvements, enemy changes and timers, and some boss tweaks are some of the various work we’ve got in the queue. There’s also more visuals to be added: upgrade capsule animations, Sombra sprites, lighting behaviour, and some additions to the title screen. It’s a mixed set of alpha changes that is not really focused on anything in particular, but rather follows our constant iterations and attention for building things into the game and improving upon them.

The next few posts to come will show off the armor, some animations, and excerpts from some of the cutscenes. These are all parts of the milestone we hit, which we referred to in the prior update. Since we’re not sure when the game is done, where exactly does this put us currently?

The milestone we hit was to have the set of content that makes for a ‘playable’ alpha. But 'playable’ does not mean publicly releasable, as we’re still some distance from that. Rather, it means that any member of our team should be able to pick up and play the game through to the end, as rough as some of those may be. They can save and load their game, acquire all the items, and get a sense of the unfolding storyline. So far, the things we have are the following:

  • Opening cutscene.
  • Intro stage, with containing smaller cutscenes to ramp up the story and the first boss.
  • 4 'primary’ stages, each with a unique boss that will give Lyra an associated weapon.
  • All the suit upgrades and heart/sub tank pickups available to try out.
  • Final stage placeholders for progressing to the end game credits.

These aren’t all finished, but having all the parts in the game puts us in the best position to work from. It lets us build out the rest of the stages and game, tune the gameplay mechanics, and keep a standard of play through the alphas. We’ll be able to add sprites, mechanical polish, and fill in the holes as we keep things in a playable state. Meanwhile, the list of what we have done and in-progress is telling of the remaining work towards the game. The end of the game is developed in writing, but is being worked out stage-wise as well as conceptually. This includes bosses, which need some solid design and artwork, and the cutscenes that play into the climax and finale of the game.

TLDR: The team’s bouncing back from some recent ailments. Our 109 alpha is in the works and will feed into a series of posts showing off some of the current in-game features.

MegaMare X Dev Update – Dec. 2016

Let’s close out the 2016 year with another development update. Dear Celestia A.I., there will be some good stuff coming in the 2017. This year has been a bit rough at times, but we’ve made a good steady pace. Once January is underway with the holidays over, we’ll show various features and progress that we’ve only talked about and not shown. Cutscenes, armor, and more will be featured in the new year’s updates as we finish up the remaining work in our 1st major alpha milestone. What’s all this milestone business? It means we’ve hit all our core gameplay needs, and we’re ready to move on into iterations territory. Our 108th alpha build came out just before the holidays, with save/load game mechanics, various cutscene improvements, bug fixes, and a spiffy, fresh title screen:

The release also caused a few hiccups in the scripting files, and we’re waiting on the last sprite-work for our armor pieces to be in-game before that’s ready to show off.

As for what’s next and underway:

  • End-of-game script-writing and boss design.
  • Tileset sketches for completed stages.
  • New and revised stage layouts.
  • Weapon power sprite effects.
  • Cutscene animations and portraits.
  • Apple-flavored alpha testing.
  • Updated UI improvements and features.

And that’s just the tip of what we’ve already got started as we continue past the year marker. Meanwhile, the team’s been gaming together, had members return with fixed computers, and are gathering fresh energy. Our newest team recruits have been diving into things and are off to a great start. We’ve got what it takes, and the love to make it great.

Now for the ever-burning question on your snow-sprinkled holiday brains:

When will the game be released?

We don’t know. It’s unlikely in to be in 2017, but if our pace quickens a bit, a beta build in the coming year is possible. And betas mean testing. We’ve received a lot of interest in playtesting, but we haven’t worked out an effective plan for how to approach it. If there’s anything we decide on, we’ll let you know here first. Keep your asks and comments coming in, we’re always happy to hear from our fans.

TLDR: We have almost reached a milestone, and will be ready to show some stuff in Jan. There’s still lots to do, but the team is getting good at this, so we’re hoping for a 2017 beta.

Continue the cheer and friendship, sprinkle in some hard work, and be on the lookout for some robot-blasting fun in the new year.
