Freddieismyqueen pulled me down the rabbit hole. This escalated quickly.

You don’t become a legend by copying legends. You become a legend by being unique, brilliant in your own right, authentic with your art, and aware of your fan base. You market yourself AROUND those principles, not by being a mish mash of others.

edwardsexton: One lucky young man is going to collect a rainbow of suits today. Perhaps too bright and vibrant for some but a fun addition to a spring wardrobe. He may well be wearing them on stage. What a lucky chap. Enjoy. #edwardsexton#colour #Bespoke - 02.28.17

The Guardian: He is currently working with Harry Styles ahead of the launch of his debut solo album. “It’s not just the suit, it’s the cut that makes it,” says Sexton, a twinkle in his eye, when I visit his showroom. “The way it expresses itself and what it does for you mentally when you put it on. - 03.20.17

…it’s the same cut as the Edward Sexton Another Man suit FYI

wait….are any americans aware that the cia overthrew the democratically-elected premier of iran in 1953 because he wouldn’t concede to western oil demands….and how that coup was the reason for the shah’s return to power, the iranian revolution, and the resulting fundamentalist dictatorship…..like, america literally dissolved iranian democracy and no one knows about it???

No. No we don’t know about it.

Americans aren’t told this shit.

The only thing we’re taught about any Middle Eastern country in school is that 1) the region exists 2) it’s where The War is happening and 3) Muslim people live there. That’s it. Maybe if you’re lucky you’ll get into the Hammurabi Code and some early Babylonian stuff but American schools seem to think that if it happened outside Europe and before the colonial period, or makes America look bad and isn’t about A Very Watered Down Version of What Slavery Was, it’s not important.

Info on this is almost notoriously hard to find. It’s not in any texts on American and Russian involvement in the Middle East during the Cold War that I can find. You have to specifically look for a book about the Shah’s return to power, and even then you’d be hard pressed to find a book like that at your local bookstore. Once you get into some higher level college courses you might know about it, but the people who can afford those are more likely to already be indoctrinated into a certain Way of Thinking (read: they’re racist as shit) by the time they get there. And it’s almost like you have to know about it beforehand if you want to find information on it.

The only reason I knew about it is because there’s a thirty second summary of the event in Persepolis. Those thirty seconds flipped my entire worldview.

“All the Shah’s Men” by Stephen Kinzer is a good, accessible text for people who want to know more about this.

I had to explain literally this to one of my co-workers, who is so fuckin racist against Middle Eastern people it’s insane.

She’s 60. She never heard of this.

As I was explaining this and how, during the Regan years, we funded Osama Bin Laden to fight against Russia, leading to the destruction of much of the infrastructure in the region, one of the plant workers came in to get his badge fixed.

He works in the quality control lab. He served 15 years active duty in the Army. Super smart guy, has a masters in chemistry and another masters in biology, raises saltwater fish in his spare time for sale, has the saltwater aquarium setup of the gods.  Raises rare corals too, some of which he donates to be used in re-seeding reefs around the world, but that’s a side tangent.

And he listened for a minute, then nodded and said “Yeah. I was there during that. I helped train people to fight. They wanted us to help them build schools and hospitals, after, but we were only interested in them as cannon fodder. Left the whole area in ruins. I wasn’t surprised when they hated us for it later. Told people then it would happen. We let them know then that they were only valuable to America as expendable bodies. Why wouldn’t they resent us for that?”

And she just looked floored.

“So…” She started, after a few minutes. “What do you think of Trump?”

“I hate him. He’s a coward and he’s going to get good people killed.” He didn’t even blink. “

She looked back and forth between us for a second, and then asked how I knew all this.

“I research things.” I said. “Google is great.” He nodded enthusiastically.

And she just sat there for a second and then said, really quietly, “I didn’t know.”

She lived through it.

American schools don’t teach you any of this sort of thing.

I recognize my privilege in that Mrs. Varner, my high school history teacher, taught us about the truth behind these wars. (And no, they aren’t “conflicts,” they’re wars.)  How American policy gambles with the lives of other countries in the Middle East and South Asia.  I don’t know how many of my classmates retained this, and that isn’t to say she didn’t leave a lot of information out.

When I was in college, I took a political science class.  Although I was in a deep depression my second year, I showed up to every class with that professor.  After class, we would spend an extra hour or more talking, and I grilled that poor man with all sorts of questions.

Because it is notoriously hard to find information, even with Google.  Because America on the whole is in the dark about our involvement.  But I couldn’t get it out of my head once I learned about Iran and other countries affected by our own damn corruption.

Trump isn’t the beginning of our downfall, he’s the fucking result.

(Part 2) It's so sad that so many people praise that and rely on it. Then there's a video about Harry titled something about being masculine, and he was being very goofy and non masculine. It had a ton of clips that I've never even seen before. Never seen them as gifs or as pictures. I'm sad and shocked at how much people can pretend isn't there. Yes about the two of them together, but changing their personalities as individuals just seems wrong. I feel like it's homophobia.

if it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck……

i’ll do you one further: imagine being eighteen and being sat in a room with a bunch of high up people in suits that probably cost more than anything you’ve imagined, who have the fate of you and your four brothers in your hands. they tell you you dance too much, move too much. they tell you to stand in the back, quieter. they tell your your voice is shit. that you’re mannerisms are too flamboyant and that you have to tone it down or else. they tell you you need to “fix” yourself because you’re putting the whole band’s future at risk - harry’s future at risk. they sit you down in classes and teach you how to walk and how to talk. they play back videos of you with a delicate wrist or flicking the fringe from your eyes or giggling too loud and tell you it’s wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. they’ve already told you you can’t sing, that you’re just there as an ornamental figure. they tell you the boy you love so much and would do anything for is the star, and you’re compromising his future. they tell you that the fans will hate you, turn against you, if you keep acting the way you do. and it confuses you to your core because you’re not doing anything wrong. you’re just being you. how can you help your laugh and your walk and the way your wrist moves? but you try. you force yourself to try. you don’t move as much. you walk at a different gait. you keep yourself in check, constantly. and then one day you decide it’s been enough. and you work up the strength to scream even behind the duct tape on your mouth.

so you wear a rainbow apple shirt to celebrate the apple ceo or whatever and you feel so free. articles praise you for your love of the lgbt community - YOUR community. and you feel so, so good. until you wake up and see that they’ve used your twitter account to spout off hateful things, denying larry, denying your support of the lgbtqa community. you lose followers by the thousands. your own fans become fearful of you. imagine being gay and seeing your own lgbtqa fans turn against you out of fear that you’ll hate them. imagine.

yes, it’s homophobia. very, very blatant homophobia. and i’m not trying to diminish homophobia in the least. but there’s so many different examples of homophobia from single shouted slurs to abuse. and what they did - what they continue to do - to these boys (louis especially) is abuse. mental, emotional, abuse. they tried to break him in anyway they could.

but our boy isn’t going to ever give them that pleasure. his will isn’t theirs to break. his pride isn’t theirs to buy.

The Importance of Being Louis

While I’ve never discounted Louis’ leadership in 1D, it’s become obvious I haven’t fully appreciated his importance.  The unmistakable 1D sound is not 1/5 or ¼ due to Louis - without his insistence and persistence there would likely not be a distinct 1D sound at all.  It’s not exactly shocking news that pretty much the entire One Direction team (outside of the lads themselves) never had an inkling of them surviving beyond five years.  Ironically, it’s not the lads who’ve become bitter, or dried up has-beens, so much as those who tried to force them into that flash-in-the-pan, boy-band mold.  I don’t doubt that Harry understands the music business, but Louis recognized where the band could prosper (long term) and pushed in that direction.

I saw something really special in the boys X-Factor covers, but that wasn’t enough to give them a career.  The boys were charming and good looking - their musical performances felt so earnest - they immediately connected with their target audience.  Savan gave them a great start in the business - the first two albums were huge hits with the boy-band audience.  The boys themselves were a huge hit too - their personalities even more than their looks (that point being largely overlooked by HQ.)  The popularity of early 1D (much as it is today) was two-fold:  Fans loved the music and they loved the boys individually and as a group.  (It’s not so much what they are - good looking, talented boys as who they are as people.)

I had long wondered who was behind the arrangements of their X-Factor covers.  Now it seems clear that Savan had a big hand in them.  To a large extent, he did a brilliant job with the boys, but he certainly could have afforded to give Louis and Niall a little chance to shine vocally.  Unfortunately, he wrote them off as “passengers” from the very beginning.

When Midnight Memories dropped the boys became young men.  The album is a bit all over the place, but their talent shines through.  They proved they could carry their audience into new sounds.  They could tackle diverse styles of music convincingly while always maintaining a certain One Direction flavor.  Two things would have happened if Louis hadn’t forced the issue of more creative control:  The lads would have become less and less earnest and convincing in their performance of the same old boy-band fare.  The fan base would not have expanded, but gradually withered away as young teen girls grew into more mature sounds.  The lads wanted more than the tried and true middling sameness of the music they were expected to produce.  They wanted something of their own - their story - their art.

Louis and Liam created the 1D sound we know today.  I dearly love Harry and his writing, but Louis is the architect and Liam his lieutenant (writing the bulk of the last three albums.)  I’m sure all five lads wanted to move in a new direction musically, but I can’t imagine any of them had the sheer moxie - the utter temerity and audacity that Louis had to pull it off.  We know Harry has given other groups advice on sticking together against all the forces that would try to pull them apart.  No one knows this lesson better than the lads of One Direction.  The other lads had to be absolutely stalwart in support of Louis’ rebellion to make it work.  He marshaled his brothers (and his lover) into a crack fighting team.  I’m convinced Syco was left with two choices:  Give the lads substantially more creative control or say goodbye to a band that was earning billions.  Given the hubris of Simon and the blindness of Savan (to the fact that these weren’t just five pretty faces anymore) I’m sure it had to be a drastic ultimatum.

They were just five naive, rambunctious, creative boys with massive, undeveloped talent.  With the right leadership, they had the potential dominate the music world.  Did that leadership come from management, label, or writers?  No.  That desperately needed leadership came from the one who was supposedly the “least talented” of all.

God bless you Louis Tomlinson.

“I’m legitimately worried about louis if his fans are here making jokes” what?? do?? you?? want?? us?? to?? do?? it’s not as if we can fly to la to go hug him or pay the 20k for him!!! and this is an incredibly shitty and stressful situation, so just let people deal with it however they want

@merrykatie‘s friend’s friend Snapped this pic of Louis and Eleanor at LAX, most certainly before the altercation. And that apparently is the “matching jumpsuits” that the Charlotte fan referenced.
