Wip (Re)introduction: The Gift of Ashes

Working title: The Gift of Ashes, a novel Genre: Fantasy, with a plus side of history and forbidden romance, action and revolution POV: Third internal, but switching between the main characters Status: First Draft, 27 chapters written out 32 (almost there!) Themes: free will | love vs duty | the power and importance of storytelling | healing | memory loss | divinity and mortality | found (on purpose, at great cost built) family | a little bit of war and assassination | a little bit of death | loving the world despite it all SummaryIt is said Sun and Moon have loved each other since the beginning of time - kept apart only by their duty to the world they are bound to watch over. But when Moon is betrayed by the very people who sought her help, everything changes… This is the story of what befalls them after they become mortals.  Scio remembers nothing of her past as Moon, and Sun is living in isolation, slowly falling apart for dereliction of duty. Chance has brought them back together, but their world is crushed under the weight of its own evils, and even the Deities are powerless to heal it. What once started as a quest to bring Moon back to how She was soon becomes a race against time: to tear down the cornerstones of a ruling class that uses Sun’s name to feed fear and obedience into the people’s minds, the two fallen Goddesses will find themselves trapped in the workings of a building revolution. Scio and Sunon will once again be faced with a choice - how much are they willing to sacrifice for the mortals they serve and whose hardships they now share? Characters: Sun, Moon, Revo, Change, and Watcher (the Deities); Klara, Defìo, Milda, Koro, Amo and Skalo (the mortals).

This is a lovely introduction! Your summary is amazing, it's exactly the kind I'm looking for in a bookstore! o(^◇^)o I love that you have the busts of the characters at the end, your art is so pretty!, and it really draws one in as a reader to see them, (*´꒳`*)

The same doesn’t mean the same: “das gleiche” vs. “dasselbe”

In German, there are two translations for ‘the same’: der/die/das gleiche and der/die/dasselbe.

They don’t describe the same concept of same-ness (Is that even a word? Well now it is). Dasselbe means ‘that exact same thing’ while das gleiche means something like ‘an exact copy of that thing’.

Look at my amazing editing skills these graphics to illustrate the difference:

Why did no one ever tell me this when I was learning German? Frau Harbison, you were so amazing in so many ways and taken from the German students of north county Dublin too soon, and I can’t believe you never taught us this!

I finished Chapter 27!

Have a snippet:

“That you would even suggest such a thing is telling enough,” Defío hissed, unmoved by the placating words. “I’m done with you.”
He pushed his chair back in place with a loud, jerky sound and made to leave, but Kato called him back: “You’re letting your emotions cloud your judgement,” he pointed out, sharp and regretful. “Some things never change with you! Beno would have answered differently.”
Defío stopped for a moment, white with barely suppressed ire, and through clenched teeth he managed to spit out a curse. “Get fucked, Kato.”
He slammed the door so hard the pictures shook.

Defìo is angry, and with good reason, but the reason is a spoiler!

I love how much anger you managed to convey here! Very impressive, thank you for sharing! o(^-^)o

mushrooms are an ancient force of growth and decay, life and rot, collapse and creation; they have been here long before us and will remain long after we’re gone- devouring that which kills us and creating that which forgets us.

it is best you tread carefully.

I’m studying biotech and every time someone brings up mushrooms our current professor will look either extremely exited or pained and go “listen.. mushrooms are neither plants nor animals nor something in between. They elude all attempts to categorize them. We do not know what they are. Some are immortal. Some produce live saving substances. Some are so closely related to humans that eating them may cause an allergic reaction against your own body. I cannot teach you about the mushrooms”

Oh to be a biotech professor and wax lyrical about the eldritch immortal mushroom.

the largest living being is a giant network of mushroom hyphae somewhere deep in Oregon’s blue mountains, It is thousands of years old, It covers 2384 acres, weighs 35 MILLION KGs (a kg is like 2 pounds) and thrives on sucking the life out of trees. we call it and it’s cousins honey mushroom.

Mushrooms were the first beings to truly conquer land and used to grow 8m up into the air. After the great dying 250 million years ago, mushroom forests covered the earth once more.

Mushrooms developed one of the most potent toxins in the world that kills most oranisms it comes into contact with, so that they do not have to compete with them. You know it as penicillin.

The nitrogen cycle which keeps all life outside of the ocean alive is unthinkable without the mushrooms growing in the roots of legumes.

There isn’t a being as eldritch and superlative yet silly and frivolous as a mushroom.

“You need to wake up,” Arketh repeated, more urgently. “You need to listen.”
Unable to control her own limbs, Rostfar staggered out of bed. She knew that her being here, at home, was impossible – but couldn’t remember why.
“Ket?” The room swayed. Rostfar reached out for the wall, pressing her other hand to her forehead. “You need to… I need—” The floor leapt up into Rostfar’s face and knocked the air from her lungs. Her palms and knees smarted from the impact.
“Mama?” Arketh sounded terrified and so, so far away. Rostfar twisted around, scrabbling for a handhold on the swaying floorboards, and came face to face with Other. It snarled at her, blood and flesh hanging in ropes from its maw. “Mama!” Arketh again; her voice was no longer in the room.
Rostfar threw herself at the door. It dissolved beneath her hands, and the hut spat her out at the roots of the Speaking Tree.

This is such a powerful excerpt omg! (•̪ o •̪) I can almost feel the room swaying! Thank you for sharing, (*´꒳`*)

Kaeris was an odd little thing, that is, if you were to believe what the townsfolk said in hushed whispers with their forked tongues. For Kaeris was different. In place of skin she had smatterings of iridescent scales, and atop her head where there was supposed to be hair there was nothing.

‘What kind of girl doesn’t have hair?’ gossiped mothers, speaking in a conspirators whisper as though dragon-kin didn’t have hearing far sharper than any human’s.

‘I heard it’s the parents fault. It’s practically abuse.’ and Kaeris would gently shake her head and laugh, for dragons have no use for hair when they are airborne. Silly humans.

But Kaeris kept to herself, she was quiet and soft spoken and would smile even at the boys who would throw stones at her from afar, for her skin was tough and she knew they mimicked their parents ignorance and hate.

Day after day, she tended to her treasure: a beautiful garden, filled with every flower known to man and those that were not. This was her hoard and she would protect it with her life. Though sometimes, on very rare days, some lost soul would wander into her garden and marvel at its beauty, oftentimes requesting a flower or two, and sometimes the dragon-kin would oblige. She only ask that the jewel of their choosing is properly cared for, for death due to neglect is the saddest kind of death. A preventable death.

These days are very rare indeed.

One day, Kaeris found herself returning from the marketplace, a basket in hand full of new seeds from foreign lands that filled her to the brim with excitement and adoration - if gardening was her love, travel was her mistress - she couldn’t wait to travel to all these mysterious places she’d heard of in books and tales from merchants, of course, she’d have to wait until her wings properly grew in, but she was a patient girl.

She saw the usual glares and heard the usual murmurs about the weird little girl with the scales on her skin and shaved head. She ignored them, as she always did. However, when she returned and found strangers in her garden, she knew ignorance was no longer an option.

What she witnessed when entering her garden; her sanctuary, her home, would’ve brought any individual to tears. For her treasure was being destroyed, flowers she had tended to for years trampled to the ground by none other than the children she greeted every day with warm smiles.

Gently, she set her basket aside in a little nook where they could not be harmed in the chaos.

“Get out.”

All eyes turned upon Kaeris, the children welcoming her with nothing but sneers and upturned noses as they continued to rip at the ground and tear at what she loved.

“Or what?” Challenged one, their hands covered in dirt and stained with grass. “You can’t do nothing.”

“You ain’t even got a treasure hoard,” announces a girl in the back, kicking an amaranthine as she did so, watching as the small petals scattered in the light summer breeze.

Get out.” Kaeris repeated, this time a little more forcefully with her eyes narrowed upon the offenders with disdain in her voice, though it carried with it a tinge of disappointment - why must children, even teenagers, imitate their parents ignorance with blind devotion?

“Yeah, you’re not even a real dragon.” Provoked another, stepping within arm’s reach, even going so far as to poke the girl in her chest.

Then, Kaeris, the odd little girl who smiled at everyone and spoke so softly as she tended to her garden, bared her teeth. She unleashed her claws and spoke in an unsettling growl; she was a dragon defending her treasure and she would not allow the likes of mortal creatures to destroy that which she loved.

She warned the children of their mistake and they scattered, they still spat venom in the streets and spoke of her weirdness to any child that would listen, but none dared approach her garden again, for there was a rumor of a dragon that lived there with mighty claws and a thunderous roar and teeth that could cut through metal.

But the rumor also mentioned a treasure, a treasure so beautiful that this dragon would defend it with her life. So, these rumours grew and spread like a wildfire, as rumors so often do. So much so that it lured travellers to seek out this mighty dragon and the hoard it protected… only to find a little girl in its place, tending to a beautiful little garden in the crook of a small town.

If you ask politely though, it is said the dragon might part with some of her treasure, in exchange for a promise that you will treat it well and tell her a tale of a foreign land.

This is a beautiful story, lovely writing (*´꒳`*)

because i’m a little salty

i sometimes worry about certain types of writing advice i see on the twitter sphere in terms of neglecting your physical health. maybe this was just a few one-offs or whatever but i’m usually going, “hmm, are you five or are you thirty?”

so that said:

  1. Please use the restroom when you need to. Don’t wait until you’ve reached whatever wordcount you’ve set for yourself. This is how you get UTIs and other bladder infections, and if you’re in the US, that can be expensive to treat. (Also, UTIs suck. Speaking from experience).
  2. While coffee is a quick energy giver, you will crash. And it will suck. Too much can cause the shakes. It’s okay to consume coffee if you like it! But try to go for an alternative healthy route if at all possible. If you like tea, drink tea. But be sure to drink water!
  3. That said, take breaks when necessary and EAT!! Make a small snack or make lunch or dinner or start meal prepping. It’s okay to step away and do something else. Writing isn’t a be all, end all sort of situation. You will get stuck if your brain isn’t being given sustenance.
  4. Experiencing wrist/hand pain is a very good sign to stop. Either for the day, or for awhile. Do some stretches, go outside if you can.
  5. “I write for days on end, barely any sleep” isn’t healthy. Your brain needs to rest. Your eyes need to rest. This is a surefire way to get yourself very sick, very easily. (I speak from experience, but I don’t have the best immune system. If someone is sick, I tend to pick up whatever they have after a day or two so. I mean, this is dependant on the person).
  6. TAKE BREAKS. ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU GET TIRED!
  7. Anything that promotes neglecting your needs is advice to be ignored.  Idfc if they have “New York Times #1 Seller” in their profile, if they’re suggesting you neglect your physical needs for hours, ignore them.
  8. This is supposed to be fun.
  9. This is supposed to be fun.
  10. It’s okay if you don’t write for a few days, it’s okay if you don’t finish a novel in a month. Seriously, take your time. This is not a race. Yes, you might want to finish the rest of your story within a couple of days, but don’t push yourself until you burn out. You’ll likely just hate yourself in the end.

tl;dr: i’m a grumpy old person who hates seeing advice that promotes unhealthy activities, whether in jest or in seriousness. there is someone out there who will take it seriously. when you’re writing, just take care of yourself.

(even take this with a grain of salt lmao)

This.

Your health - physical and mental - is important and should not be neglected. Your writing matters but *you also matter.* You as a whole person.

I really find that in creative fields there is this performative passion that is expected. A romanticism surrounding obsession and mania, self-sacrifice and suffering.

That isn’t necessary. It’s extraneous to the process of creation. It’s ultimately counterproductive in the long run.

So, here’s a reminder that you matter and no piece of creative work is worth sacrificing your well-being.

Help needed | Donations / Signal Boosts

[23.02.2010]

Hi folks. I… hoped I wouldn’t have to do this, but here we are. I’m tired and stressed, and having mum ask for my last tenner so she could pay for lunch and fuel while taking my sister to a tournament today has brought me to the edge.

Most of you will know by now that I’ve been in precarious af situation re finances and home life for the past year, and now it’s come to a head. The good news is that me, mum and sister have split away from dad. The bad news is that he’s continuing his financial abuse bullshit and refusing to pay up on support, and mum can’t risk racking up any more solicitor’s bills to sort the situation (she can cover what she owes so far, but no more). Mum works part-time as a freelance de-clutterer and cleaner, but because it was half-term break, she didn’t pick up much work this week and that’s set us back roughly £100. I’m training in copy-editing and my PIP allowance can’t handle supporting the three of us, and I’m not in a position currently to take on more work, so:

I NEED DONATIONS TO HELP COVER LIVING COSTS FOR ME, MUM AND SISTER FOR FEB/MARCH.

If you’re able, please drop me a [Ko-Fi] or use [PayPal.Me] for smaller donations/depending on your preference. You can also support me on [Patreon] if you like my advice and writing.

Thank you so much to everyone who has provided support so far, be that kind words, advice, or Ko-Fis, and much love and hugs to everyone else in advance.

(And remember, only donate if you’re in a financially stable position yourself!)

I love sci fi and I love space operas but. I fucking hate writing about spaceships.

Oh, they’re fine when they’re big enough to function as cities with artificial arbories and gardens and public entertainment and bars and stuff, but you would have to force me at phaserpoint to write about traveling via Millenium Falcon. I only like small boats because interesting things live in the sea and you can look at them sometimes. But I hate road trips and I hate personal spacecraft and I hate that space travel involves traveling through space, which is mostly empty, and the only personal spaceship travel I enjoy is in fucking Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and even THAT makes me claustrophobic.

Maybe my loathing of personal interstellar spacecraft just my misdirected fury at the failure of American public transit. I don’t fucking want a Millennium Falcon that I have to take care of and pilot and fuel myself! I want a goddamn space FTL bullet train. I want a space ferry. I want space subways and space trolleys and I want to load my Space Bicycle onto the front of a Space Bus and pay a subsidized Space Ticket to get me passage through a well-maintained wormhole and then I want to unload my Space Bicycle (capable of efficient local travel but not FTL travel) and go about my way.

Space oceanliners are fine but. I hate spaceships. There. I said it! I hate spaceships! I am a bad sci-fi fan! I HATE SPACESHIPS AND I WANT FAST AND SUSTAINABLE PUBLIC TRANSIT IN THE UNITED STATES.

Avatar
f1rstperson

🤔 this is true but also there's nothing to stop you from developing giant space transit tbh??

Like actually do all of those things, it's entirely within the realm of something people should be thinking about with sci-fi world development

Oh I have! I’ve put a lot of thought into how I would like to write convenient interstellar FTL travel.

It’s just. Since space emperor is like 65% parody, I do feel like I have to include classic “zoom zoom pilot man my ship is my car and I am very possessive about it” content to SOME extent. Except I hate it and I don’t like it and I don’t wanna.

so something i think the rpc/writing community may have been sleeping on but i wanted to share…

it’s a random generator for custom cities/towns that are perfect for things like roleplaying, writing, and d&d. it’s simple but just complex enough to allow for customization of the things you’d like to change

honestly i love this page because it’s so helpful for so many different things?? i can’t show all of the customization options here in the images but some are, but not limited to:

  • small, medium, or large maps
  • changing the map coloring
  • you can add a title and key
  • you can warp certain points for small adjustments
  • .png export
  • saving wips
  • and so much more!!

honestly the best way to learn all that the generator does is to play with it yourself. i adore using this and hope it helps anyone who also needs a similar resource!!
