Calyptocephalella gayi- aka the helmeted water toad- is a large aquatic toad capable of exceeding two pounds in weight. Fossils show us that toads of the genus Calyptocephalella have been around since at least the late Cretaceous. Although these fossils were recovered from Patagonia and the Antarctic peninsula, these toads can currently only be found in Chile and perhaps parts of Argentina. Images by Dr. Peter Janzen.
