It will get worse. Rising temperatures will lead to more global crises. The west will be hit with more and more refugees, the chances for new pandemics will increase (which is also a side effect of deforestation and more people keeping exotic wildlife as pets), and most western countries are also not ready to handle the natural disasters that come with the climate change.

So the populists (and helpless politicians who don’t know how else to tackle the rise in right wing ideology) need answers to these complex problems and they will target minority groups to keep their rigid worldview alive. It’s not only the gays. Antisemitism is on the rise, many countries cut down on health care for trans people and of course they are also targeted with violence.

It’s not only hate that drives these forces. It’s fear. Fear of an unknown future, because they get confronted with mixed messages from the people that are supposed to be their leaders. And while many chose to find peace in community, others chose to take out their anger at the weakest targets they can find.

If we want to stand strong against this „trend“, we need to show others that they are not alone. We need to strengthen our local communities, give help and support to refugees, stand with our trans siblings and, I dare to say it, show compassion and understanding to the people who don’t share our world view. They are not all lost cases. Death threats and overthrowing the government won’t help, don’t let yourself get radicalized by the left as well, because there is no simple solution to that problem. This will keep being a rough battle but if it means that more people feel loved and seen it is worth the fight.
