cruelty is so easy. youre not special for choosing it

"The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. This is the treason of the artist; a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain."

-Ursula K. LeGuin, The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas

"Evil is boring. Right? I kinda believe in the banality and mundaneness of evil. Evil is just selfish impulses, which at the end of the day are really easy to understand. It’s easy to understand why people do bad things. It’s like “yeah, ok, you’re selfish and scared and cruel, I get it”. Being good is complex and beautiful and hard." - Brennan Lee Mulligan

Mulder and Scully NEVER made a bad track. “You’re my one in five billion.” BANGER. “You’re my constant, my touchstone.” SLAPS. “I wouldn’t put myself on the line for anyone but you.” Emotionally and sonically RICH. Don’t even get me STARTED on “You kept me honest. You made me a whole person. I owe you everything, Scully, and you owe me nothing.”

They even had their romantic DANCE scene!

(unscripted... By the way... David just got up, invited Gillian to dance and it was so good it was kept.)

i can't believe there are people out there who think jane austen's novels are "period pieces" and therefore "unrelatable" when sense and sensibility has a paragraph about how you should bring your children to awkward gatherings with vague acquaintances with whom you materially HAVE to stay in good term so that there's always some sort of conversation topic at hand

"(...) and Lady Middleton had taken the wise precaution of bringing with her their eldest child, a fine little boy about six years old, by which means there was one subject always to be recurred to by the ladies in case of extremity, for they had to enquire his name and age, admire his beauty, and ask him questions which his mother answered for him, while he hung about her and held down his head, to the great surprise of her ladyship, who wondered at his being so shy before company, as he could make noise enough at home. On every formal visit a child ought to be of the party, by way of provision for discourse. In the present case it took up ten minutes to determine whether the boy were most like his father or mother, and in what particular he resembled either, for of course every body differed, and every body was astonished at the opinion of others."

like TELL ME you haven't had this EXACT, SPECIFIC interaction before and i won't believe you. complete with the "i don't know why he's so shy, there's no way to get him to be quiet at home" observation 😩
