hey everyone. i'm realizing as asks continue to come in on this blog that i don't 100% know what to do with it anymore. it started off as a place to vent about books, but since i started working in publishing a couple years ago i have unfortunately fallen a bit out of love with that entire conversation. i see deeply nefarious and toxic behavior in this business every day, much of which i've discussed in some way or another over the years via asks or random posts about exploited publishing workers and privileged authors. it all makes me so resentful and uncomfortable that i find it hard to engage with any of it in my free time anymore.

i'm currently searching for a career pivot and i'm in touch with agents who are interested in my writing, but until either of those things solidify i don't really see myself harboring the same excitement for books i once did. that said, this blog has grown so much more than i ever thought it would and i've made lifelong friends here, and i didn't want to leave you all hanging. so this is my little status update as to why i've slowed down.

this is by no means a forever goodbye--i'm still very active on my main account @ripley-stark if you care at all to see what i'm into these days--but for now i'm going to put this account into semi-retirement. i'm keeping up all my posts, though, and i hope to come back one day when i revitalize my love of reading and the book community ❤️

oh god that Lindsay Ellis twilight video was so bad…

I haven't kept up with her since she made it, but it has been a while--like 5 years or so--and it seems like she took some steps back in that time. But honestly that's all I can say on the matter since I don't know what she's been up to!

It's the annual cost that really makes it for me.

That $429 million is for 20,000 writers. When shared out it's really not very much at all.

"Ah but Bacon," you say, "it's not much shared out, but added up, nearly $500 million is a lot!"

And yes. It is. To a normal person. However to these huge studios no it isn't. Warner Bros paid their CEO $250 million last year. He is 1 guy. They gave him the same amount as it would cost to increase the pay of ten THOUSAND writers.

And that is just one single studio. The AMPTP is made up of nearly 350 studios and networks. They can afford to pay these writers what they are worth.

look i dislike the corporate artyle book cover trend as much as the next person but we cant pretend every book looking the same is something new. if you stepped into a bookstore in 2013 there would be approximately 57 books whose cover art consisted of a girl in a ballgown with her back half-turned to the camera photoshopped into a vaguely fantasy-like landscape. i was 11 years old fighting for my life to find the right maximalistic girl and her single-adjective book title we cannot forget the horrors i went through please be respectful of my experiences

criminal profiling is just astrology for cops

taking a forensics class and watching the professor explain one by one how criminal profiling, hair microscopy, and bite mark analysis are all pseudoscience responsible for ruining innocent lives, and how on top of that, fingerprint analysis, despite being significantly more reliable, is subjective and prone to contextual bias. and also bullet striation analysis has the same issues. and also bullet lead analysis doesn’t work. and also handwriting analysis has an error rate high enough to render it useless

damn i'm almost starting to think the entire criminal justice system only exists to provide the illusion of protection while justifying state violence idk

More people should abandon Internet discourse and get into observing/engaging with local politics. I say this not because local politics often offers more meaningful opportunities for effective praxis (although it does), but because local politics often offers just as much highly toxic and entertaining petty drama.

I highly recommend city council meetings. You might make yourself an informed voter and active community member or something. You also might get to watch an ongoing soap opera of old men ready to murder one another over trash collection ordinances, and unlike the Internet, none of them can effectually tell one another to kill themselves no matter how hard and how clearly they are thinking it.

There’s no end to the DC phase either I hope the next decade is when we get a new cinema renaissance

I think it will burn itself out but it will take a few more years. It's not sustainable for studios to keep making 9-figure budget extended universe projects that will inevitably be cancelled due to their mediocre/bad writing and CGI. We're already seeing proof of that with Disney's major losses on the Star Wars shows and Netflix having basically no money-making content except for Stranger Things.

The 2010s "Golden Age" of TV was only possible because a few gems outshone the slush of cable. TV has completely changed form since then with the rise of streamers and now we're back at the point where we've basically recreated cable. So each streamer will have to wise up and invest in quality content eventually or become obsolete.

I thought people left twilight in 2012 I’m guessing Stephanie Meyer would come back for a twilight tv series since twilight is her life support

the twilight fandom had a huge renaissance at its 10-year anniversary in 2018 when it went back on netflix and lindsay ellis released her white woman manifesto on how it was never problematic actually.

that said, it's always been a big fandom and stephenie meyer is still making healthy royalties off of it 15 years later. despite her many issues, she's never been a huge attention or money seeker. i genuinely think she's just in it because she thinks it would be neat. like head empty no thoughts

this has to be one of the evilest photos ever taken. just zero class. no decorum. and the tattoo placement - just nasty. and the fucking hat.... the stylist was out for him that day because who in their right mind would put this together? the pink leggings that actually fade into a shade that matches his skin tone so its like. lorts (legging shorts but illusion) with printed on piss and butternut squash puree stains on the left leg, white suspenders and a fucking pilgrim hat. the fucking fish eye lens and this horrid pose. how do you make a bulge in tight clothing look bad? idk what kind of talent that is but i cannot believe its been done

hi im complaining about tiktok again and i know this has been said a million times but i despise how the self-censorship that got really popular on there is quickly becoming the norm. why is my podcast that i listen to that is by and for adults and swears regularly censoring the word "sex" in its episode descriptions on spotify, a platform where they dont even censor officially uploaded song titles for songs like "fuck the pain away." why are there book blurbs using "unalive" completely in earnest. why are people on twitter writing s3x. youtubers can at least handwave having to bleep terms like "heroin" bc that's specifically a youtube problem but why in an era where everyone is handwringing about how everything is Literally 1984 do people not seem to care about grown adults gleefully regressing into homestuck typing quirks and ugly babytalk
