running work errands on a weekend should be illegal. be an executive assistant, they said. it’ll be good experience, they said. we have work-life balance in this company, they said. well, they all sit on a throne of lies because here you are, wasting away your saturday for a to-do list that was plopped into your e-mail hoping it finds you well can you please have these done asap thanks!!

it’s only 10am, and you’re contemplating your life choices. wow. you are now living that adulting life everyone else has been raving about. ain’t it fun.

you look up and see that you have arrived at a coffee shop. you could almost cry. sweet sweet nectar of the gods coffee YES. you push the door and try not to make questionable sounds when the scent of freshly ground coffee hits you. you are not having a when harry met sally moment whilst contemplating your career choices. nope, not today.

you check their menu and hope to god they won’t judge if you order a drink that’s 90% espresso and 10% reason to live. the customer’s always right, isn’t that the old adage? you heave a sigh as you lean on the counter. the barista turns just in time from whatever drink he is making, setting it on the end of the counter and calling out a customer’s name that for some reason is “fullsun.”

“hi, welcome to j-fam coffee, what can i get you?” he asks, smoothing out his dark denim apron.

“the will to live.” you mumble.

“uhh.” he blinks at you. “sorry?”

“sorry?” you echo. “ugh sorry, i’m having a really bad day and no coffee has entered my system at all i am not functioning properly.” you ramble. you snap your fingers to make yourself focus. “can i get a large iced latte with extra shot of espresso and two shots of vanilla syrup? less ice, please.”

“sure thing,” he enters your order in the register, “anything else?”

“hmm,” you unconsciously pout as you look at the baked goods they have. “that last slice of chocolate cake, please.” you point at it and turn back to the barista, taking out your wallet from your bag, grunting when the buckle gets caught on the handle.

“got it. one large iced latte, extra espresso shot and two shots of vanilla syrup and less ice, and a slice of chocolate cake. will you have it for here or to go?”

“for here, please.” you hand over your card.

“your name, please.”

you give your name and spell it twice because for some reason you always get the baristas who maybe 12% intentionally get it wrong.

“here’s your card and receipt. we’ll call you when your order’s ready.” you check his name tag, jaehyun, it says. “go on and have a seat.”

“thanks, jaehyun.” you muster up what you hope is a pleasant enough smile, get your card, and walk over to a corner table you spotted. putting down your bag, you hear your phone make a thunk sound. hating yourself for using a canvas bag for the day because it’s basically a black hole and your stuff is a mess, you count down from ten as you fish around for your phone. it’s full of notifications: texts from your mom, emails from your boss, an instagram notification from a shop you recently followed, and a text from your roommate asking where the hair dryer was. you sigh, again, and go through them all.

back in the cashier and kitchen area, jaehyun looks over to you from time to time. he knows coffee shops are havens for a lot of people. even then, he rarely sees people like you who look at coffee like it’s their lifeline, and he’s friends and co-owners of a coffee shop with a coffee aficionado like johnny. he quickly prepares your drink and takes care to add a little more vanilla syrup. johnny sees it and lightly slaps his hand. jaehyun ignores him and gets a fresh slice of chocolate cake for you.

“bro, you aiming for five stars on our yelp review or something?” johnny asks, amused yet entertained.

“leave me alone.” jaehyun mutters.

“aww jaehyun’s crushing on a customerrr.”

“am not!” jaehyun hisses at him. he quickly looks over at you scowling down at your phone. is it wrong that he finds it endearing? and your pout from earlier? god.

“yeah my dude it’s weird and you shouldn’t say things like that out loud.”

“leave. me. alone.” jaehyun carefully puts everything on a tray, and turns to the pick up sign. taking a breath, he calls out:

“large iced latte with espresso shot and vanilla syrup and less ice and a slice of chocolate cake for miss brew-tiful!”

you stand and walk up distractedly, thinking about your next errand, completely missing the way the other barista is nudging jaehyun for what he said. “hey, miss? your order is ready.” you hear jaehyun say softly.

“right. thanks.” you reach out for the tray, but notice the way the taller barista is grinning. “umm. is your co-worker okay?” you ask jaehyun while nodding over to the guy behind him.

“ignore him. he’s an idiot who samples our coffee too much so he’s over-caffeinated.” jaehyun says, his ears and cheeks turning the prettiest shade of red. “enjoy your cake and coffee. i hope it makes you feel better.” the taller guy whispers something but jaehyun just reaches back to shove him away, not taking his eyes off of you.

“oh god. do i look that awful?” you groan.

“no!” jaehyun cries out. “i mean. you just, you look like you’re going through a rough day. and you said, you haven’t had coffee yet. so. yeah.” a dimpled smile makes its way on his face and you swear his eyes are sparkling.

good grief.

you blink up at him. why why whyyy did you have to have this mini crisis in front of a barista who’s clearly a bae-rista?? you try not to smack yourself when you get your tray. you nod at him and the taller guy, walking back to your table, back facing them. you wish you can drown yourself in your drink. you hear bickering from behind you and you try not to react.

focusing on your order, you taste the coffee and your world stops. and you have to grip the table because excuse this coffee and who made it, it’s the most perfect thing ever. it’s more than a caffeine kick. it’s more than nectar from the gods. it’s. it’s a hug in a cup. a glass. it’s your silver lining in the clouds of stress and negativity that’s been bugging you for a while now. it’s beautiful and it is hands down the best coffee ever. nothing matters but this coffee. you finally have a bubble of peace and quiet and you’re feeling so much better.

swiping the last of the cake, you’re in a much better mood. you gather your things and the tray, standing up and taking it back with you to the counter. taller barista, whose name you learn is johnny based on his name tag, is grinning at you as he gets the tray.

“enjoy your coffee?” he asks loudly, nodding behind him where jaehyun is trying to disappear into the espresso machine. he mouths “he’s listening” to you.

“i loved it. i definitely needed that caffeine boost.” you reply in the same volume. jaehyun straightens up and turns to face you. “thanks, jaehyun.” you say in a more sincere tone compared to earlier when you ordered.

“you’re welcome,” he says, dimpled smile and all.

“okay. you guys better thank me for this.” johnny says and claps his hands. “you. are you free for dinner next week, maybe around 7pm on friday?” he points at you.

“i think so? depends on my boss if she wants to take up my weekend again.” you answer.

“tell her you have a life and intend to live it. that’s insane.” he turns to jaehyun. “you! you get the day off next friday. you know that bistro yuta and mark recently went to? it’s great for dates. you, her, dinner date next friday.” johnny claps again and walks away.

you and jaehyun look at each other. he shrugs and walks over to you, joining you on the other side of the counter, hands in his apron’s pockets.

“nosy co-worker and wingman aside,” he begins, clearing his throat, “i’d really like to see you again. so if you’re free next friday, i’d really love to invite you on a dinner date.”

“i’d love to.” you reply with a smile. “i’d love go on a date with you.”

“great.” jaehyun says.

“great.” you say back.

“great! now get each other’s numbers and let’s get on with our day now!” johnny calls out, making both you and jaehyun laugh.

Seemed like each time you were together was always by accident or by coincidence. It started when you were out with your friends, looking at the beautiful cherry blossoms. It felt like a scene out of a drama when the petals were flowing down and there in the midst was none other than the Lee Taeyong. The member of NCT which all knew very well and loved. But in that moment of laughing at what your friend was saying your eyes swept over to his and instantly locked. You get your heart jump at the moment he gave you a sweet smile before you both continued walking your separate ways. Of course you and friends had a little freak out session, you did after all kind of meet a celebrity!

“What if you two run into each other again and bam! You guys are on your way down the aisle.” You threw some popcorn pieces at your friend saying she was absolutely crazy. That’s nothing but a dream, it’s just a once in a lifetime thing.

Except it was more a second time in your life. You were having one of those days where nothing seemed to go right. When it rains it pours, right? Well yeah because now you are running for shelter from said rain even though you consistently checked the weather today.

“That girl who does the weather should be fired. This is the second time she’s messed up on the forecast!”

“Tell me about it.” You nearly jumped out of your skin when someone came up next to you, stretching out his jacket to protect both of you from the rain. Looking up at your hero was and nearly collapsed. His sweet smile was present on his face that made your heart melt. Water droplets fell from his now soaked hair as he guided your dumbfounded self into the cafe. You were getting shy and embarrassed because your brain currently turned itself off making you choke on whatever sound was stuck in your throat. Taeyong shook his hair a little, rubbing his hand together trying to warm up a bit. He again looked to you making you snap out of your trance finally.

“Have we met before? You look awfully familiar.” You were about to say same except well. He’s literally a member of a kpop group, everyone knows him. And you quickly realized it when a couple of fans themselves gasped and shyly waved at Taeyong. Oh my gosh, I’m really with Lee Taeyong. This isn’t a dream. This is legit. And I’m just standing here like a soaked dog. Taeyong greeted the girls nicely before turning his attention back to you.

“I’m sorry I’m being super rude. Thank you for helping me and let me treat you to something warm, please. You look super cold and I feel bad.” Taeyong waved you off insisting it was not a problem but did take you up on your coffee offer. Finally get your drinks and treats you two sat at a table a bit more private beginning your little talk.

“Seriously though, where have I seen you?”

“I think we made eye contact at the cherry blossoms. I wanted to say hi because well you know.” He chuckled at your shyness. You were absolutely adorable to him. Not to mention the sweetest girl ever. But recalling that when he was out with some of the other members he remembers seeing you. He remembers the smile you held that made his heart clutch. Once you looked at him it felt like the whole world stopped. It was just you two in that moment before the boys pushed him in the direction of the car. He wanted so bad to at least say hi but the bets he could give you was a smile.

You never left his memory since that day. He was sad as though he might not get to see you again. But fate has a funny way of making things happen. Now here he is laughing with you and getting to know you. Also learning your name. Y/n. It’ll never leave his brain now that there’s a beautiful face attached to it. Your wonderful conversation had to end abruptly as his manager was calling him back to the studio.

“I’m sorry, Y/n. I-“ now it was your turn to wave him off, totally understanding that he’s got important things to do. He sadly smiled at you before getting up to gather his things. But before he left he made sure to get your number just so he won’t let go that fast. Since that day you quickly became friends, constantly texting each other or send each other silly photos. You tried to meet up in person as much as he could but keep it on the down low. You saw him in a different light except for the spotlight everyone sees him under.

Taeyong had a big heart and made sure everyone around him was happy. Or least make their day a bit better. He remembers your favorite snacks and treats whenever you two get to hang out. You teased sometimes when all he did was eat sweets explaining why he was sweet to everyone. But he’s extremely talented and hard working whenever he FaceTimes you while in the studio.

“Stuck on another song?” He nodded, his shiny eyes on full display.

“I can’t get past this one lyric. I don’t know if I should go more happy or sad or romantic-“ he cut himself off with a frustrated groan. You couldn’t help but giggle as he was really trying his best.

“Well think of something or someone that fits the song. Go with your emotions that you feel and maybe that’ll help you.” Taeyong nodded talking to you a bit more before hanging up. But now all he could think of was you. His emotions for you were turning into something more than this friendship thing. He absolutely loved your friendship, don’t get him wrong. But he just started to think of you in a different way. And the lyrics now all made sense. Writing down the one lyric that’s been etching away was ‘We’re in love aren’t we?’

He’s in love. That’s it. Plain and simple, nothing else could describe how he felt with you. From the day in the cherry blossoms, to that fateful day in the rain, to now this friendship that blossomed. “I’m screwed aren’t I?”
