chapter three: sleeping with the enemy 

The first thing Mike saw when he woke up that morning was El’s face.

He was used to waking up to the sight of his alarm clock on his night stand, the bright red neon numbers flashing “6:30” over and over until he pressed the snooze button. But this, waking up to a soft face with resting eyes and pink lips and messy brown curls, was much better.

Not that he would ever admit that aloud, obviously. It’s not like he’d lost his mind. He knew he hated El, a feeling that ran through his veins and made his heart beat faster every time he thought about her. The simple thought of having to talk to her was enough to turn his face crimson and make him feel aggravated in a way he couldn’t describe. But even he couldn’t deny that she looked beautiful when she was asleep. 

Probably because she’s not talking, he thought, mentally high-fiving himself for the insult.

Ok but Mike obviously asks Hopper if he can marry El. But what if he also makes a visit to see Terry. El has taken him there before a few times even if she’s not really aware of what’s happening. El’s introduced him and reassured her mama how much she loves him but also how good he is.

But one day he turns up and Becky answers the door thinking…no Jane?

And he says he has a very important question to ask Terry even though they both know she won’t really be aware of what’s going on.

But she lets him in and he sort of kneels in front of her chair and basically pours his heart out about how much he loves El (Jane) and how he promises to take care of her and asks if he has her permission to ask El to marry him.

He places his hand on top of hers and even though her eyes barely move and she doesn’t physically appear to acknowledge that Mike is there, he feels a tiny movement in her hand, and he knows that that’s her way of saying yes.

Stranger Things high school AU

In high school, Mike and El obviously know each other’s locker combinations, trading them on the first day of classes and sharing them with no one else.

Mike’s locker is meticulously organized. He has his schedule, a mini-periodic table and a photo of he and El that was taken the first time he took her skating tacked to the inside of his locker door.

El’s locker is full of pink stickers and photos of everyone she loves. There’s one of Will, Dustin, and Lucas at the park; one of Nancy and Steve at the Wheeler’s breakfast table; one of Joyce and Hopper smiling while they take a break from painting the house; one of Jonathan with his camera pointed back at her; and, of course, that same photo from skating that Mike has hanging in his locker.

El leaves her English books and Art supplies in Mike’s locker because of the convenient location. She’s also been know to leave little doodles, often of him, tucked into the pages of his textbooks.

Mike leaves a post-it note for her every single morning with a special message. And on Fridays he gets to school early and leaves her two Eggos, wrapped in paper towel, and a carton of chocolate milk.

When Dustin wants to prank Mike by leaving glitter in his locker, El refuses to give up the combination and instead uses her powers to open Dustin’s locker so that she and Max can turn his prank against him.

When Mike (finally) decides to ask El to prom, he leaves a dozen roses in her locker with a small handwritten note because he’s still too nervous to ask her in person, knowing he’ll get tongue-tied. He spends the entire day waiting for El’s response, but it comes—unexpectedly—in the form of a post-it note taped up next to his periodic table. “Yes” the note says, amongst several tiny doodled hearts. Mike keeps that note forever. And El? She keeps all of Mike’s notes in a scrapbook under her bed.
