FFXIVWrite 2023 Finished Masterpost

I originally had a masterpost for the month that I sporadically updated as it went, but now that its finished, my pre-month ramblings about hoping I could do well to keep up didn't fit anymore for a finished masterpost, and I had enough pieces to fit into nice categories for presentation that I figured it'd be better to make a new masterpost for a cleaner layout.

In a surprising and unintended turn, a lot of the stories I wrote had an underlying theme of first meetings and impressions. A lot of that probably furthered by the Yuri mini-collection, but even before then, quite a few had that style to them.

19 works overall, especially since for much of this month, time wasn't on my side and I couldn't write for as many prompts as I would've liked. But I'm very proud of what I did manage and what I was able to achieve.

Thank you for reading, whether you read one or all.

One thing that really gets me about Urianger comforting Minfilia in Amh Araeng is that when she says Thancred hates her, Urianger never actually says, no, he doesn't. He says instead, none of this is your fault, and the original Minfilia wouldn't hold anything against you, and in typical Urianger form he says some things about fate and faith, and his words are kind and beautiful--but he also completely sidesteps the question of how Thancred feels about her.

And I think this moment is very reflective of Urianger's relationship to Thancred and child!Minfilia as a whole. It reflects what we see when we first see all of them together in Il Mheg.

Urianger knows that the way Thancred behaves toward the girl is hurting her. He's spent enough time around the two of them to see that plainly. Theoretically, he could say something to Thancred about it; they're obviously close friends, and if Thancred was going to value anyone's opinion, it would be his. But he doesn't say anything, because he still feels guilty and responsible for all of it: about their Minfilia going to the First and what happened to her there, and thus for what both Thancred and child!Minfilia are going through now. Even though Thancred has never outright blamed him for it (however he may feel privately, which I think is hard to say), it seems like Urianger still feels like he has no right to say anything.

So he tries to compensate instead. He's kind to Minfilia, connects with her in his own way and gives her books, and by the time we see them together he's obviously become something of a familial figure to her. I would say that he and Thancred aren't so much raising her together as they're doing it... around one another. Thancred is gruff and cold and holds Minfilia at arm's length emotionally so that his protectiveness comes off harshly even when it's well-meant, and Urianger dotes on her and tries to make up for it all while avoiding the actual problem.

So that conversation in Amh Araeng is both touching and maddening to me, and it really drives home what's maddening about it when, upon overhearing it, the Warrior of Light turns to Thancred to ask him if he has anything to say to Minfilia--who has just said, out loud, that she thinks Thancred wishes she was dead--and Thancred just says, "Not today."

And so they both go on avoiding the actual problem, for just a little longer.

I strongly prefer it when the Scions *don't* have Ancient counterparts.

I think it means more if they're part of the new souls born to the star either after Zodiark's first summoning or after the Sundering. Which is a whole thing!

Importantly, those were the souls that the Convocation were going to sacrifice to Zodiark to bring back the Ancients they lost.

To me, I think it's vastly important that G'raha, Y'shtola, Urianger, Thancred, the twins, that all of them are people Emet-Selch would throw away without a second thought. That to him, you're the only one worth half a damn... And broken as you are, only half a damn. And before he lets himself accept that you really are what's left of Azem, you're just someone else he's convinced isn't a person.

But I think these are the very souls Azem left the Convocation to save, even if Azem still didn't want to break the world. And these are the souls that Venat and the Twelve did break the world to save.

To me that's so much more important than any reincarnation romance (much as I adore that kind of story too). That to Azem and to you, these people matter anyway.

You put it beautifully.

To go analytical on the matter in the other direction, we can be highly certain they are not reincarnated Ancients and do not have Ancient souls. Not a single one demonstrates any ability to have the Echo. And considering that their entire job description is watch out for Calamity like events and try to steer the star to a better tomorrow, the chances that they would not have encountered a triggering event to awaken their Echo (if they DID have an Ancient soul) just seems incredibly unlikely.

Severine used to have a safehouse. It was an apartment that she kept in Ul'dah. A warehouse that had been completely outfitted to be a comfortable, quiet, private and safe place to stay or for other people to stay. She let someone stay there. Someone she thought was a friend. And they made it an unsafe place. She abandoned the safehouse after deliberation - there were a lot of good memories in that weird little space. But it didn't serve its intended purpose anymore. And that purpose was safe. Now she has another place that she can call safe. She's collected them now. Any number of little hideaways and homes. But this one? This one's just for her.

I wanted to pick a moment that was pretty pivotal for her and her starting to learn red magic is actually apart of a Realm Reborn! Her meeting X'rhun Tia is such an important step for Alisaie

Caption from my Twitter, Alisaie had actually won the vote for the character featured from A Realm Reborn so I put together this piece for her but it took awhile for me to think of anything other than just Coils. I hope you guys like it.

Gold stars to anyone who knows who the man in red is <3

My fave thing abt the scions is how they yell at WoL when WoL sacrifices themself once (1) as if each and every single one of them hadn't sacrificed themselves several times before. 1 hour ago even!!

Thancred: put yourself in our place for a sec. How do you think you would feel?

WoL, who has been witnessing this man sacrificing himself as a hobby all this time:

One of the typical imageries associated with the concept of "hope" is the image of light amidst darkness. FF14 does a lot of stuff with light and dark of course but in Shadowbringers they made light a thing of horror so they can't rely on the light image all the time.

Another usual image is a bird - "Hope is a thing with feathers..." from the Emily Dickinson poem. Meteion, the bird, was created with hope, but becomes a thing of despair.

So what's left as the image of "hope" in Endwalker is this:

From the cutscene "Live, Die and Know", where Venat monologues about hope and light everlasting while the camera cuts back and forth between her, blackened with blood, and the WoL succumbing to the Light corruption, both limping and stumbling along their paths. This is the face of hope in FF14 - broken, dying, bloodstained, yet defiant. That's what makes playing the hero in FF14 so damn magnetic.

Early ARR, I was cringing at the cliche chosen one, light vs dark type concepts. Further along I began to doubt Hydaelyn, given her ineffectiveness and the cruelty of the fate she bound the WoL to. But from Elpis to the end of Endwalker and beyond, I was proud, for the first time, to be called a Warrior of Light.
