My favorite book of all time is Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five. It’s been a while since I’ve read it, so I might actually crack it open for some inspiration for the book I’m writing.
In the same space of fiction, I also love Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. I think it’s a really lovely and touching story and I enjoy its mystical elements.
Another great piece of fiction is Seeing by José Saramago. It’s actually a sequel to a book called Blindness, which I believe is his most famous work. However, you can read Seeing without reading Blindness and personally I enjoyed it a lot more. The book asks what would happen if everyone refused to participate in government and explores protest and how authoritarianism takes hold.
One of the most important nonfiction books that I I ever read was The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander, but that has become extremely popular so if you’ve read it Angela Davis’ Are Prisons Obsolete is a great and much shorter alternative.
My favorite autobiography is definitely Assata by Assata Shakur and it’s one I recommend to everyone.
