“Proud of Your Boy”

———————————

I started this drawing when Duncan Jones posted about the Moon soundtrack being released on white vinyl with a really cool slip cover (the soundtrack itself is gorgeous too). I couldn’t help but think about how his dad would probably think his son having records out would be pretty cool.

“Letting It All Hang Out”

Digital Painting

————————————-

Happy 77th Birthday, David Bowie! I’ve had a lot of fun working on this one. It started as just a silly idea and a good way to draw a lot of his costumes to practice textures. When I first started sketching, I hadn’t expected it to take over a year to complete, but I knew this one wasn’t to be rushed, but to be enjoyed to the fullest extent. I truly enjoyed studying photographs of each costume, both the beautiful detailed and well-lit pictures from the V&A museum exhibit, but also those captured over the years while the costumes were in use for performances, music videos, and movies. Every article of clothing here (even the ones in the basket (deep in the basket even!) and on David himself) are actual items worn throughout his career. I’m so super curious to see if anyone can name them all. I think my favorites to do were also the ones that were the hardest to capture, such as the Pierrot outfit on the far left and the Yamamoto piece in the center. Let me know your favorites in the comments!!

{Unofficial} Labyrinth Tarot- 6 The Lovers

The Lovers card represents pure consensual and supportive love, especially that of a romantic couple. They empower and strengthen each other, working as a cohesive team. The card can also represent the choice of commitment and can represent sacrifices you might have to make for love such as time, money, and energy.

In the movie, we don’t see very much of Sarah’s father and stepmother, but what we do get to see is a couple who are excited to engage romantically with each other (they’re going on a dinner date!), are sensually active (hello Toby!) and support each other as parents both with their new baby, and with the father’s child from a previous marriage. We see her bicker with Sarah, but she does try to offer compromise and understanding, albeit a tad harsh. I would imagine she and Sarah’s father were probably pretty worried about Sarah since she was “an hour late” and it was beginning to storm. This was the era of “do you know where your children are?”, after all. Watching this movie as an adult, it’s interesting to look at the perspective of the parents here as well. As a kid, her father’s quick word before they leave seems callous and rushed, but as an adult, they were likely rushing out the door because of a reservation hitching closer to time than they planned due to Sarah’s late arrival. It even sounds like they tried to make the night as easy as possible for her by feeding the baby and putting him to bed before they left.

All in all, I think that Sarah’s parents get a worse rep than deserved because the movie is shown from Sarah’s perspective, and she starts the movie as a bit of a brat. It makes me wonder how their relationship might change after the events of the movie.

I have zero proof that this is how it was, but this is how I always imagined Iman showing David a spiffy new outfit would go. Happy October 14th!! 💖

—-

A few years back I made a small drawing of Heathen/reality era David kissing Iman on the cheek in an adventure time style. She LOVED it and ended up posting a photo of it as her laptop wallpaper in their living room with the caption “we love it!”. She then would occasionally post the drawing here and there on their anniversaries or when they’d go out for date nights. As a Bowie fan who draws a LOT of him, I couldn’t be more proud and so happy that she liked the drawing that much. One of my favorite posts of that (I’ll throw the screen cap in the comments) was captioned “October 14th! Our magical day!” and that’s always stuck with me. I had some time last night and knew I wanted to make her something new. Who knows if she’ll even see it, but I know I enjoyed drawing it 🥰

{Unofficial} Labyrinth Tarot- 5 The Hierophant

This card represents taking what you have learned and mastered and using that knowledge and skill to act as a teacher or mentor to others. It’s a card that represents honoring that ability to share knowledge and upholding traditions tried and true.

While he’s not offering any super innovative ideas, the Hierophant reminds you of knowledge that is still of use on your journey.

The Wiseman offers Sarah a little blanket wisdom for making her way through the labyrinth, as well as a little encouragement to keep her spirits up. He reminds her to not get into her head too much with the puzzle and instead to focus instead on the progress she’s already made. This is your reminder today as well: It may seem like we’re not getting anywhere, when in fact, we are!

Now please…leave a contribution in the little box!

{Unofficial} Labyrinth Tarot- 4 The Emperor

Of course it’s Jareth! The king of goblins and the master of the whole Labyrinth!

The emperor card represents control and regulation, as well as authority over those you lead. He is the decider of rules and systems that work to govern the land and group at his heed, and that includes ensuring that discipline is carried out when necessary. That goes for bratty teens who wish their siblings away, and then immediately want them back, dwarves who don’t follow the rules and help those teens, dog knights who leave their posts, and trolls who call rocks to crush the goblin army. Not to mention actually ruling over and maintaining some semblance of order within the goblin population. But it also means acting rationally and fatherliness. Toby, the baby brother in question, is treated fairly. He’s the innocent party in all of this and therefore a guest until his sister either wins him back, or her time is up. He is given food to eat, a toy to hold, and plenty of entertainment and company while they wait out the thirteen hours together. This is done so thoroughly that he sleeps soundly when returned and tucked into his crib after Sarah’s victory.
