He gave him a look as if to say ‘don’t understimate me’. “As if I couldn’t get you a fake ID, papers, anything you’d need to work. As long as you wouldn’t do your experiments on living patients.”

“What good would doing my experiments do on living patients, hm? My serum wouldn’t make them anymore alive -- and how careless do you think I am?” He asked defensively, perhaps peacocking in order to cover up the fact that he was genuinely nervous about being in the general public again.

Judas shook his head, amused. “I do as I can, Herbert. I’ve considered opening my own clinic.” He could see the look on Herbert’s face and decided to put out the bone he’d been holding onto. ‘Perhaps you could join it as a doctor.”

Herbert’s morbid wonder switched like a light over to annoyance. He looked back at Judas, folding his hands on the table. “My license was revoked when I was imprisoned, and last I checked, I was still a wanted fugitive. How is that going to work, exactly?”

Avatar
He leaned on his arms, watching with some amusement. “That is correct. They think because I am getting up there in years, nevermind that my skill level has only improved, that I should still step down.”

“Idiots.” Herbert barked. “This. This right here is why my work is so important. They should get a first hand encounter with what my work can do.” He mumbled the last sentence mostly in irritation, but the wheels of revenge were already turning in his head.

Judas gave him a hesitant look. ‘Don’t go killing anyone at the hospital.” He warned gently. “Just a few of the board, I’m almost to retirement age, and they think I should retire gracefully.”

“Retire gracefully?” Herbert mocked, slapping his hand on the table with a scoff. “They have no idea what they’re talking about! I’ve put you in better shape than they could even imagine! I bet half the board are fat layabouts that can’t even hold a scalpel steady, right?!”

Avatar
He looked up, surprised by this response. “Two came in with cardiac arrests, one is a pallative care patient dying of cancer, one was in a car wreck. Why?”

“You’re a perfectly capable doctor with no discernible signs to a loss of work induced by your age. There should be no one in that hospital that thinks of you as anything less than esteemed. Who is calling you an ‘old man’?”

“It’s not a waste of time, it’s going to help a lot of people, but since there’s not that much information to begin with, they wanted me to update what we know.” Judas was eating his salad with gusto, enjoying both fruit and veggies drizzled with a light dressing.

“Interesting.” Herbert offered without a single ounce of sincerity. He watched as Judas ate his salad with glee and sighed, taking down big gulps of his coffee to cut through anything possibly healthy touching his tongue.  “Do they understand that you’re worth more than just editing an out of date paper?”

Avatar
“As long as you take no medicine, or anything from anyone living.” Judas shrugged. “And it’s coming along, I don’t know why I agreed to write it though, it’s slow going and I am frustrated with the lack of information I’m finding.”

“No one living.” Herbert promised, enjoying the liberty such a promise provided him.  Picking at the salad, Herbert singled out the fruit first before finally starting on the greens. For a doctor and scientist, his personal diet was usually made up of soda, coffee, and a various other sugary snacks. Even more so when he wasn’t using his serum to self-medicate.  “There’s no reason to bother if it’s just going to be a waste of time.”

Avatar
Judas was putting the finishing touches on the salad when he looked up, raising an eyebrow. “What is that you’re working on?” He asked curiously, setting it on the table with the plates. “And what do you need from the hospital?”

“This and that.” He said vaguely, sitting down at the table. “Unethical ideas. No one will be hurt.” Drinking down his mug of sugar-laced coffee, he looked back up at Judas. “How’s your paper coming along?”

Avatar
Judas nodded his agreement, and headed up the stairs again to make himself eggs and toast, and brewed more coffee. He took himself to his own study to work on his dictation and paperwork.

It wasn’t without trying that Herbert had hoped that Judas had forgotten about his presence in the basement, working well past lunch. But on the third reminder that lunch was ready and a threat that Herbert would be dragged up the stairs, he finally resigned to his fate and stepped away from his work bench. The usefulness of his stolen specimens were near their end anyway.

Untucking his tie from his shirt, Herbert walked upstairs and washed his hands in the kitchen sink. “I’m going to need to get back into the hospital this weekend.”

Avatar
“Yes, if you come up to eat I will leave you alone for the afternoon.” Judas promised. “If you’re bound to a time limit, you may skip breakfast but must come up for lunch at least.”

Herbert contemplated his options before deciding. He looked back down at his notes and had the bubbling muck in petri dishes. “I’ll be up for lunch, then. Brew more coffee.” Knowing Judas well enough by now, Herbert realized that he’d had no chance on skipping out on the offers all together, less he be manhandled and dragged upstairs.

Avatar
He snorted slightly. “That is true. But if you’d told me, my Scientist, I would have made sure you had all the samples you need.” Judas stepped closer, but did not crowd Herbert, not try to look over his shoulder. “If I make breakfast, could I cajole you to eat it?”

Toeing the line of irritation, Herbert looked back up from his work bench. He looked over at Judas, the strain of keeping his temper under control evident by the small pulsating vein in his forehead.

“If I come up and eat, will I be left alone for the afternoon? I’m bound to a time limit.”

Avatar
Judas gave him a look. ‘You did what.” He sighed, knowing Herbert’s quirks were still a learning curve for him, even after several years of being with him. “You could have asked and I might have provided the samples for you, through the proper channels.”
You give him one dead body from the morgue and he thinks he can just walk into the hospital on his own, Judas mused to himself.

“I was on a time limit.” Herbert continued, almost laughing at Judas’ suggestion. “I don’t always have time for you to run negotiations.”

Waving his free hand in some vague gesture of disinterest, Herbert hunched back over his work bench. “Besides, I wasn’t seen, and they were just going to throw it out anyway.”

Avatar
He smiled at the silence and headed down the stairs. Herbert would’ve never answered such a ridiculous question, and if Judas wasn’t around to make him eat, especially when there was work to do, Herbert simply didn’t eat.
Judas hit the bottom step and smiled at the younger man. “At least let me make you some tea. Who are you re-animating today?” He walked closer.

Hunched over two separate specimen containers, currently playing host of God only knew what type of monstrosity, Herbert quickly took down a list of chicken-scratch notes.

Once Judas was finally no longer in a position to be ignored, Herbert still only managed to speak with a vague interest.

“I’m not. I’m testing differences in amniotic fluid. I went behind your back and managed to get some human samples from the hospital.” He looked up, offering a glance and the only semblance of remorse he was capable of. “Sorry, Dr. Myer.”

A small mention that I’ll further elaborate in the reboot of this page:

Herbert is pretty ship exclusive to 3 characters:

1.) An OC by @bastardantichrist 2.) Dan Cain’s 3.) May Dove Canady (May 2002)

If anything else comes up, I’ll think about it, but most of the time, Herbert’s just too completely insufferably occupied with himself and his work to even bother with another else -- unless they serve a purpose. He’ll more than likely manipulate your muse if they have something to offer him, but romantic shipping is pretty exclusive.
