How did you get interested in Sherlock Holmes?
My interest goes back to age twelve, when I began reading the stories. When I began writing fanfiction, it was ACD. After I saw the BBC version, I loved it as well and began writing stories in that universe.
How are you involved with the anthology?
excerpt from What Silent Love Hath Writ, by Calais Reno
“May I get you anything, Doctor?” Kahler, the police sergeant, leaned over me, his face filled with concern. “Perhaps you will return to your hotel?”
I nodded. Sitting in the station was a kind of limbo, a place where I could still hope I was wrong, that any moment he would come through the door, dripping wet, laughing that he’d given me such a scare.
I am a soldier. I will not stay in limbo when hell is where I must go.
Who is your favorite character from the Arthur Conan Doyle canon? What do you like about them?
Holmes and Watson, of course, though Watson never tells us much about himself. Doyle left a lot of room for speculation about them both. Of the other ACD characters, I would say Mycroft Holmes. He knows everything, but is too lazy to actually run around solving things, so he works for the government, being a sort of index of everything anyone needs to know. And he founded the Diogenes Club, a place for men who just want everyone else to sit down, be quiet, and stop nattering on about things.
What's a favorite tip or trick of yours for writing or art?
More of a philosophy: Write what you would want to read, don't compare yourself to others, and challenge yourself to try new things. Your time spent enjoying the creative process is infinitely more valuable than any final project you create.
Who do you think would have blushed the most reading a romantic story about them: Holmes or Watson?
Anything else to share?
I'm grateful to the team of wonderful editors, writers, artists, and everyone who put this anthology together. It's been a wonderful experience to be part of that.
