Okay, so I watched Luca for the third time today and looking closely, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that Alberto might be a trans male.

This drawing of Luca’s family (which is accurate, I checked and you can too if needed) shows the tails and ears of all four of them.

Those that the audience assume to be cis female (the grandmother and mother) have spikey tails, whereas the assumed cis males (the dad and Luca) have tails that have more smooth ends.

Then if you look at some other sea monsters seen in the show, the neighbor that Luca has in the beginning that we as the audience assume to be female has a spiked tail as well.

And the old lesbian couple we see at the end, one has a spiked tail (although the other one is hard to see)

Then, if you look at Luca’s uncle, he has a more smooth tail like Luca or the father.

Based on this, we can assume that a spikey tail=afab and smooth tail=amab.

Then we have Alberto, who does in fact have a spikey tail which is in line only with characters we assume to be afab.

Obviously there is more to sex and gender than this, and we have no idea if any of the other characters are trans. But, this does make a good case for Alberto to be trans.
