ted lasso really just went. you can give people the kindness and support they deserve, but you can’t control what they do with it. sometimes you help someone and they become better. sometimes you help someone and they become worse. everyone has a great capacity for both selfishness and kindness; in the end, the choice is up to them

listen listen listen listen listen if Stede doesn't find that old peice of fabric floating in the ocean and tuck it gently into his pocket to keep safe until he sees Ed again. And then they meet again, and Ed is still angry and he's crazy and so he challenges Stede. And so they sword fight, and obviously Ed wins, and Stede gets stabbed, again, maybe too close to an important bit. And as soon as he does it Ed regrets it. Stede is clutching at his clothes as Ed holds him close and he lowers him to the ground gently. And Stede is just smiling up at Ed, because he found him, he found Ed, and yes he's so so mad and yes he's just stabbed him, but he's here. And Stede reaches into his pocket and pulls out the red scrap of cloth and brushes it against Ed's cheek, soflty, like Ed had done to himself with the cashmere so so long ago. And Ed is crying and holding him close, and Stede says "found this. Found you. Im sorry." And then he's unconscious and Ed is sobbing and begging him not to go. And of course Stede is okay, Ed watches over him again. While he heals. And when Stede wakes, Ed sitting by his side. Ed smiles, crying again, and says "you came back" and Stede smiles back, reaches for Ed's hand, waits for him take ahold of him, curling their fingers together, and says "never should have left." And then Ed is on him and they're both crying and laughing and holding each other so so tightly because they're here, and they're together, and they're never letting go.

there's something so deeply upsetting about looking back on lucius and ed's relationship throughout the show after the finale. lucius is a fantastic character who embodies all of the wonderful themes of this show more than anyone else, and is established almost immediately as the most emotionally intelligent character in the cast with a fine tuned understanding of relationships and is constantly picking up on things no one else seems to notice or understand, to the point where he becomes somewhat of a therapist to both stede and ed when they need it. lucius, when you get down to it, is the only person other than stede who really sees ed. and ed knows this, because when he's at his absolute lowest, hiding from the world and from his crew, he specifically asks lucius to come and talk to him because he's the only person he trusts enough with this stuff to let himself be seen by him. lucius is the only one who can bring him out of his depression, and so ed reaches out to him. and just like he did for stede before, lucius tried to save ed from a breakup and tried to ease his heartache. and ed is inspired by it, too. he gets up and out of his blanket fort and sees the crew again and tidies up, finally ready to make a fresh start, only for him to be driven back into the darkness. and that's not lucius' fault. he did exactly what ed wanted him to. when there was no one left in the world who could see him, he let lucius in and allowed himself to be vulnerable in front of him. when ed felt hopeless and alone, lucius was there to give him the company and the words he needed. lucius is a good friend, a counsellor, a shoulder to cry on, someone that you trust with the most vulnerable and broken parts of yourself. lucius knows who ed really is. lucius, no matter what, can be relied upon to do the impossible and bring a man on the brink of self destruction back to himself. and that's exactly why ed needed to get rid of him.
