There's a certain duality concerning An Empty Bliss Beyond This World. On one hand, the album title is hands down one of the most spot on we've ever seen and sets an overall template to what The Caretaker has to offer. The album is a 45 minute rollercoaster into a delicate and somewhat untapped subject, that of Alzheimer's disease's efect on human perception. The concept of the album revolves around a study published a while back by a team of researchers that discovered an amelioration of pacients' memory, concentration problems and mood, while listen to music they used to enjoy when they were healthy.

James Leyland Kirby, the man behind The Carataker, manages to create a piece of music that tries to recreate the feelings of those pacients, by masterfully sampling inter-war swing and dixieland 78s that give a blissful (no pun intended) feel while morphing into full on (dark) ambiental soundscapes at times. These samples are heavily repetitive and very raw, with their fair share of crackling and vinyl warping. This might make the little audiophile in each one of us cringe a bit, but it just adds to the whole experience and amplifies the feeling of nostalgia and distance that the record emanates.

All You Are Going to Want to Do Is Get Back There starts the album on high ground, giving a warm vibe and sounds like one of those songs you'd associate with a very dear and personal memory, cut short by the equally apt titled Moments of Sufficient Lucidity, that takes the repetitive nature of its predecessor into a comtemplative and somber view. Another track that's worth mentioning is Camaraderie at Arms Length which is a peaceful and mellow as can be track with that strong inter-war touch we've mentioned before. This is an album that both jazz and ambient lovers should click with, packed with memorable moments and a certain sense of adventure, making it certainly worth a try for a lovely late night spin.

 8/10

Fantastic Mr. Fox - San’en EP

Artist: Fantastic Mr. Fox

Title: San’en EP

Label: Black Acre

Cat. No.: ACRE 035

Year: 2012

Country: UK

Genre(s): Electronic, Pop, IDM, Glitch

Tracklist

Fantastic Mr. Fox is finally back!

Now, after more than a year of absence, he is returning to the Black Acre label with another stunning four-track EP. A lot of us have been waiting this one, and San’en it’s without doubt Stephen Gomberg’s best work yet.

From house to grime, and laced with RnB, he manages to reference all his influences and still create some of the most expressive, soulful production out there, always keeping with his distinct sound in a way that no other producer has been able to do.  San’en is a more musically minimalistic and intelligent RnB release.

Still sounding as instantly recognizable as ever, the tracks here maintain all the hallmarks of his earlier productions while showcasting a more refined sound that we have heard before.

The four-tracks offering sees the Mancester-based producer collaborate with his London-based label mate Alby Daniels on vocal duties for three of the four tracks. Alby’s voice is entagled in a neverending web of soul influences. His talent is reflecting in all three tracks because he creates a soulful and deep jam on them. The result of this collaboration sees another impressive pieces of modern electronic music that you have come to expect from them.

Speak Nuh , my personal favourite, is the highlight of the record and it is the only track without vocals. It acts like a reminder of Fantastic Mr Fox’s undeniable talent. On Speak Nuh,  Fantastic Mr. Fox saw an opportunity to explore a harder, more straight-edge dance floor sound. After a moody build with deeo kicks, a detuned synth-line slowly cements into place before dropping like a brick to establish a powerful groove.

Words cannot describe our love for Fantastic Mr. Fox. In a world full of producers whose sounds are so similar, Fantastic Mr. Fox is one whose stands alone.

On San’en he proves that, despite a break, he’s still relevant. His work is showing bigger, brighter and smoother than ever. All the tracks here give a lot for the listener to love.

I can’t imagine any others release from the scene will be this strong this year!

Malfunction (Adjust) by A Made Up Sound

Whether it be under his 2562 or A Made Up Sound moniker, we’re big fans of Dave Huismans. The Dutch producer’s output is always consistent, and he’s again delivered here with the excellent Malfunctions EP, which was released yesterday on 50Weapons. The big floor ready jam of ‘Malfunction (Adjust)’ is our pick to start off the weekend, but if you’re looking for something a bit more left field, the more abstract ‘Malfunction (Despair)’ will no doubt do the trick. An essential release for all the Techno heads out there.

Top 15 of March / Top 15 of April

Uni life and side projects have managed to get the best of us, so we would like to apologise for not putting on our top picks from March. Since it's never too late to do something about it , today we decided to fix this and bring you a few of the songs that made us feel a little better during the last two months. Although March wasn't one of the best months,in our book at least, April manages to compensate and we found ourselves having to leave a few bangers out. Expect, as always, a wide array of genres and releases, with household names sharing the stage with some more acquired tastes. Enjoy!

Scuba is the production and DJ alias of Paul Rose, the curator of Hotflush Recordings, a label, which having released some of the most important tracks of the formative period of dubstep, has grown into a leading player in the wider world of electronic music. A celebrated and influential DJ, Scuba was voted #25 in Resident Advisor’s 2011 poll of the world’s Top 100 DJs and has also been nominated for several categories in DJ Magazine’s Best of British 2011 Awards. Earlier this year Scuba released his ‘Adrenalin’ EP, picking up radio plays from Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank as well as Mistajam, illustrating how his sound has mutated into previously unexplored areas. Alongside ‘Adrenalin, Scuba also released his addition to K7!’s DJ-KICKS series which has made notable appearances on several “Best of 2011” lists. On the 27th February, Scuba will release his third album through Hotflush. Entitled ‘Personality’ and featuring 11 brand new tracks, it takes in a wealth of genres across contemporary dance music, proving once again Scuba’s place at the cutting edge of the electronic music scene. Preceding his LP will be ‘The Hope’; pushing on from the tense atmospherics of previous Scuba material, the single fizzes with claustrophobic bass pressure and menacing narration. Backed by an exclusive non-album cut ‘Flash Addict’, ‘The Hope’ will proceed the album on the 6th February. Originally from London, Scuba relocated to Berlin in 2007, and released his debut album, ‘A Mutual Antipathy’ in 2008. The stylistic synergy of the album cemented his position as one of the most forward-thinking producers to emerge from the London bass scene. In the same year, Scuba founded the massively successful SUB:STANCE night at the legendary Berlin club Berghain. SUB:STANCE has since launched in New York with a look to expanding further in 2012. Scuba’s second album, ‘Triangulation’, was released on Hotflush in early 2010, joining the likes of Mount Kimbie, Sepalcure, Joy Orbison, Untold, Sigha and George Fitzgerald on its enviable roster. With ‘Personality’ due for imminent release and plans for a live show in the works, Paul Rose’s constantly developing world seems set to keep on turning in 2012.

We want a fresh start to a new week, so we invited Bask to record a special guest mix for us. You may know him from some recent gigs here in Bucharest, where he delighted us with an infusion of future bass rhythms, UK funky and love.

Do you ever have the feeling you're sitting on something wonderful but you can’t share it with everyone right away? Well it’s pretty much how I’ve been feeling about this mix. This is more like a blend from classical house and techno forms to the latest UK trends, with a bit of epic future bass dubplates.

One for all those dark & cold nights. Put your earphones on and enjoy!

Paleman - Sun Dance

Manchester producer PALEMAN has apparently spent the entire weekend listening to the new Burial EP, but I’ve had to put that work on hold, such is my complete and severe  addiction to ‘Sun Dance’, Calum Lee’s latest track. A jazz influence exists within this guy’s work, but its scarcely applied on this occasion, with sharp, stinging beats taking centre stage, atop a grizzly combination of industrial synths and tick-tick percussion. A suitably excitable way to start the week.

We are so very sorry for our lack of updates recently, but it's been a crazy month for us. Anyway, we are ready now for starting our podcast series for 2012 with a very special guest - Herb, a Romanian DJ and a good friend as well.

If you’re looking for one hour of pure entertainment, here's an awesome DnB mix from him. You'll love it because it starts smooth then quickly goes into deep heavy basslines!

Another freebie as well, this is a definite worthwhile investment of 63 minutes.

Addison Groove (aka Antony Williams) started life under a different pseudonym altogether. Recording as Headhunter, with an LP and 12” releases on the influential Tempa label stretching back to 2007, he achieved legendary status within the dubstep scene. His work at the deeper end of the spectrum graced the label an impressive 7 times, a figure matched only by Skream. This work looked set to continue until 2010 when, seemingly out of nowhere, he crafted one of the biggest bass music tracks of the decade, ‘Footcrab’, under the new name of Addison Groove. The response to ‘Footcrab’ was phenomenal, receiving critical and commercial success in equal measure across the dance music scene. Getting plays not only from the dubstep DJs that Williams was used to reaching, it also found its way into the record boxes of techno and house heavyweights such as Aphex Twin, Surgeon, Ricardo Villalobos and Mr Scruff, bringing an enormous new audience to his music in the process. Taking influences from the Chicago ghetto tek and juke scenes, Addison Groove’s impact on UK bass music has been colossal and unprecedented, sparking a huge interest in these styles from his peers and the listening public alike. “Transistor Rhythm”, Addison Groove’s debut album, is a rare example of a release where the description “much anticipated” is not just a fantasy of some PR agent. The expectations are high, but we are convinced nobody is gonna be disappointed. Hear for yourself!

Grimes / d'Eon - Darkbloom (2011)

Genre(s): Synthpop, Ethereal Wave

A 36 minute long split release isn't exactly what I'm usually on the lookout for, but I searched this out on the strength of a sole song that snuck its way around and managed to get me curious about what Grimes is about.

Ophelia begins Darkbloom in a tone that reminds of 80s Darkwave, but well recorded and with short snippets of Claire's vocals. This quickly leaves place to Vanessa, a slowly building example of what happens when you mix early 90s inspired Pop synth lines, an inocent way of singing and some reverb. The funny thing is that it manages to keep a somewhat sinister & ethereal edge behind the aparent fluff and remains coherent till the end.

Crystal Ball & Urban Twilight throw the aforementioned fluff, keeping the 80s style and even having a dab at new wave & post-punk, though in a tamer, more electronic form. They're easy to listen to and keep a haunting quality that seems to go with the territory, concerning Ms. Bouchet's work. Ivory on the other hand starts out with some random sounds, before morphing into a peaceful arpeggio and Grimes' calming voice, ending her side of Darkbloom on a somber yet peaceful note.

D'Eon's half starts out with Telepathy. From the get go, one can easily see that this is a different affair, one of a more relaxed and melodic manner of seeing things and if it didn't have that annoying buzzing through the entire song, would have been an interesting tribute to the early German chillout music scene. Thousand Mile Trench continues the peaceful aproach, but in a more dance friendly direction. It has a diverse background to it's name too and manages to hit all the right spots, with a more dynamic bit in the latter part of the song. Tongues also has an interesting transition and the vocals go very well with it's playful nature. Transparency is D'Eon's highlight here, with wonderful cascades of electro-claps and synth goodness, offering the most fun on the release and something that wouldn't be out of place at a late night afterparty.

Though D'Eon and Grimes don't have a lot in common musically, it doesn't annoy and keeps a certain variety to Darkbloom. However, there are moments which could have been given a better treatment.

3.5/5

Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma (2010)

  Genre:IDM, Glitch Hop

Fly Lo's 2010 effort is a very interesting mix of Jazz samples, weird timing and prized IDM bits and bobs used to great effect. This might give the impression that it may be chaotic and with influences too different to be mixed, but Cosmogramma manages to blow that theory to pieces, sounding very connected and almost conceptual, having songs glued together with the aforementioned touches and assuring some smooth transitions.

It's a very dynamic record that hits hard from the first track and it will take a while before you're accustomed to its pace, after which it's like a stroll in the park. There are several tracks which act as small buffer zones, giving the listener some more relaxed and mellow beats to dig into before going back to the dominant pace. Being distantly related to the Coltranes seems to carry some advantages and the Jazz samples are beautiful and masterfully intertwined with the electronical beats, Arkestry being bound to steal smiles from Sun Ra fans. Speaking of hints, there are some to his earlier work but overall, Cosmogramma sounds more polished and has a certain style that will give a considerable amount of replay value. Give it a chance, if you haven't already.

4/5
