I feel like there’s needs to be, like, handbook for authors who post on Ao3 for effective metatext.

By metatext I mean like tagging, summary, and authors notes (especially initial authors notes at the beginning of a fic). The means by which we communicate to our readers what they’re getting into.

Because we kind of all have to learn it by osmosis and there are conventions but nobody’s really taught them at the start, so there’s inconsistencies and misunderstandings or people just not knowing things through no fault of their own.

This ends up breeding frustration and confusion and in the worst cases resentment, hurt, and aggression.

I’m severely tempted to make such a handbook and get it circulating.

I think it would do fandom a lot of good.

Good news, I’m writing it

Update:

I’m at 9680 words, roughly 16 pages single spaced, with two or three sections to go.

Update:

First draft done. 11,100 words, 29 pages with formatting

The final draft is getting cleaned up right now. I’ll probably be figuring out how to post it tomorrow.

On which note, anybody know the best way to make a PDF available online?

Okay it is done!

Go here for the PDF, or here to view the whole document as a tumblr post.

I recommend the PDF.

Related note: the post length limit on tumblr is apparently more than 13,000 words.

Worth a read; even as a long-time fandom veteran I encountered things I didn’t know were in use, like the “& Related Fandoms” tags.

Anonymous asked:

There is a writer, I love every work she has written so far and I comment or leave kudos every chapter/work that she had published. Is that too much? I'm feeling like a stalker.

Odds are you are now that author’s favourite reader and they have you specifically in mind when they write because they’re looking forward to your reaction to it :D

At least, that’s how it goes for me.

Something I’ve found being the commenter in this situation… They worry when you stop too. I’ve more than once been confronted with the fact I am Known and Acknowledged when an author’s been like ‘Oh thank goodness, you didn’t comment last chapter I thought you were sick of it’. I’ve also had authors hyped to hear from me if I’ve returned to a fandom after disappearing for a while. I’ve had one ask if I was ok because I disappeared for a while.  They know you and they love you.

Can confirm my wife has a favorite commenter, when they leave a new comment on something she’s written I get ‘BABE BABE BABE COME HEAR I GOT A COMMMENT FROM X’ and I hustle to hear her read it out loud to me, her eyes shining the whole time, her whole body vibrating with joy, blushing her head off and smiling from ear to ear.  She reads them and rereads them and I can always tell by the look on her face.  Every comment from a favorite commenter is a love letter and listen friends you are loved in return.

She speculates about what Favorite Commenter will think of things in the new chapter, if they’ll guess new twists coming up in the plot, if they’ll like how she works in a new character or a rarepair in the b plot of the story.  She talks about her hopes that Favorite Commenter will enjoy a new story she’s working on.  She says things like ‘Favorite Commenter was said something about Y and it’s not actually where I’m going, but it’s given me a new idea…’  Every comment from a favorite commenter is an inspiration, and they are writing for you.

And honestly, from my experience, having a favorite commenter can keep you writing even when you don’t have the emotional wherewithal to write for yourself.  A lot of people advise authors to write for themselves and to heck with anyone else, but there are times you can’t.  For years, I didn’t write for myself–I wrote for my favorite commenter.  It meant that was the only person who saw a lot of my writing.  But it also meant that I didn’t stop.

Don’t ever hesitate to tell someone how much you love their writing or why.

SO MUCH ALL OF THIS.

I Thought We Could Have Some More Plates (Peter Parker and Thor)

Request by anonymous: “request where Thor helps Peter with the dishes but accidentally breaks all of them”

Warnings: none

Word count: 902

A/N: hi, guess who’s back with a short little thing after being gone for ages? me, it’s me! also, we’re pretending Endgame didn’t happen in this one

~~~
The evening at the Avengers compound had been fun and everyone agreed to help clean up. Peter was happy whenever he got to hang out with the Avengers and had been over the moon when Tony had invited him to an Avengers game night. Whenever he got to spend time with the Avengers he felt like he became more integrated with the group.
He had had the time of his life and couldn’t wait to share every last detail with his best friend. Ned would swoon if he heard about all the cool gadgets Tony had added to the games to make them more interesting. Ned would sulk because he wasn’t invited, but be happy for his bestie who had found a new dad figure to lead him through his life.
When they decided who’d clean up what Peter had ended up on washing up duty. Everything was done in pairs so no one was left alone and Thor had offered to help him. Peter was more than happy to have the god of thunder help him with such a simple household chore.
Turned out it wouldn’t be quite as easy as Peter had thought to wash up dishes with Thor’s help. Thor had insisted on washing everything by hand instead of using the dishwasher and Peter didn’t dare to argue with the big man.
Thor laid Mjolnir carefully on the counter as Peter turned on the tap and waited for the water to heat up.
“So how exactly do we do this?” Thor’s voice was filled with fascination. Peter turned to him with evident amusement He listed everything they’d need and explained in what order things would go and it seemed like Thor was on board with everything he said.
When the dishwater was ready Peter started washing the plates one by one and handed them over to Thor to dry.
“How is your education boy?” Thor asked.
“You mean school? It’s okay I guess. Nothing big has happened in a while, which is good I guess,” Peter answered and reached for the next plate.
“What lessons do you have in these schools here on Earth?” Thor asked and leaned back against the counter. He crossed his arms while he waited for the next thing to dry. He forgot that he was holding one and it slipped from his fingers. The crash of the porcelain against the floor tiles made Peter jump.
“Thor! That scared the shit out of me!” Peter swivelled around towards the god of thunder who was staring down at the plate with a miserable look on his face.
“I did not mean the break the darned thing, I forgot I was holding it,” Thor explained and looked up at Peter. The sad look on the tall man’s face felt so out of place that it made Peter laugh. He almost looked like a big golden retriever who had been caught doing something he shouldn’t.
Peter’s laugh brought a smile to Thor’s face and soon he was laughing as well.
“Maybe I should be the one washing the dishes instead,” he suggested and Peter nodded. They switched places and Peter started his usual flood of questions about Asgard.
“What are the rivers like?” Peter asked as Thor handed him yet another glass to dry. Thor was much faster at washing up than Peter had been and he had a feeling it was because of the godly powers he had. There was a line of glasses and plates waiting for him dry them.
“That was the last of the tiny goblets. Shall I help you dry everything?” Thor asked and Peter nodded. “I might be able to do it slightly faster if I use my lightning as help,” he suggested and Peter was immediately on board. He nodded his head excitedly. “Take a step back boy, for safety.”
“How will you control the lightning?” Peter wondered.
“I need my hammer.” Peter reached out and handed the intricately decorated tool to the god who stared at him with wide eyes. Thor shook his head and took the hammer. “Thank you. Now, stand back.” With those words, Thor directed a bolt of lightning through him and toward the plates.
Suddenly there was a loud crack and sounds of shattering plates. Peter ducked behind the other counter and waited for the ruckus to be over. Silence fell over the kitchen. The teen poked his head up and looked at the god of thunder whose hair was a huge mess of frizzy ends and stood up on all sides. His eyes strayed to the dishes, but all he could see was a black spot and shards everywhere.
“Did... did you blow up the dishes?” Peter's voice was full of amusement. He met Thor’s wide eyes. They stared at each other for a few seconds and then they burst out laughing.
The rest of the Avengers were at the kitchen door in a matter of seconds, having heard the bang throughout the entire building.
“Are you okay in here?” Tony asked as he looked around the kitchen. His eyes fixed on the black spot, the shards of porcelain, the frizzy-haired god and the teen cowering behind a counter dying of laughter.
“I thought a few extra plates would do us no harm,” Thor managed out between giggles. Tony shook his head as the rest of the Avengers slowly joined in with the laughter.
hey guys
so i know i haven’t been active because of school but my boyfriend and i need some help. we are both in school and work two jobs but nick needs his wisdom teeth and an extra tooth taken out. i absolutely HATE that i have to do this and hate asking for help but we can’t pay the bills for it. i have the link listed below and we are in desperate need. just sharing it would be a huge help. our families can barely help and insurance covers a lot but his extra tooth being removed makes the price shoot way up. thank you for anything you can contribute.
Just a quick little update
Hi! I’m sorry I haven’t posted much in ages... Last year was my last year in high school and I had these massive final exams and life just got in the way, you know? Anyway, I’m happy to be back even though I might not be posting as frequently as before.
About my story, I Was Left Unsupervised (reader x Tom Holland), I’m sorry but I will not be continuing it. I don’t feel comfortable writing about real living people anymore (unless they are my friends and I’m writing just for them to read). I might redo the concept with Peter Parker or another character, but as the story is now it will not be continued. I’ll still leave it up on my blog in case someone still wants to read it.
Brothers Under The Sun
Request: by an anon, Loki protecting Peter. I’m also gonna pretend Infinity War and Endgame didn’t happen
Warnings: some mentions of being hurt and injuries
Word count: 1.8k
A/N: Hi sorry I know I haven't written anything in ages which also means some of the people on my taglist have probably changed their names. If your name has a strike through it means I couldn’t tag you. if you wanna stay on my taglist please message me! I also want to thank the anon who sent me this ask, sorry I went in maybe a different direction than what you meant with the request!
Peter had lost track of time. All he saw around himself was sand, everywhere he turned there was just more sand. The sun was burning on his back and he desperately wanted to take his suit off, but he knew if he did that he would get a sunburn in three seconds flat. How had he ended up here? In the middle of a desert without food or water, only wearing his broken suit. He continued his slow crawl forward. He had to reach the end of the desert at some point, right?
I want a story about a king whose son is prophesied to kill him so the king is like “whatever what am I supposed to do, kill my own kid wtf is wrong with you” so he just raises him as normal, doesn’t even tell him about the prophecy, and instead of some convoluted twist of events that leads to the king’s murder the son grows up and when the king is very old and dying and in excruciating pain the kid is just like alright I'mma put him out of his misery.
The king’s son becomes the new king, and is prophesied to defeat evil and bring an age of prosperity. His generals and knights all crack their knuckles but he pretty much ignores them and focuses on strengthening the infrastructure of his kingdom. Forty years later he is old and sick but still hearing his subjects’ grievances, and a general’s like “how will you defeat the prophesied evil now? You’re old and weak.” Another visitor, a teenager fresh out of the kingdom’s public education system, looks at the general like he is an ignoramus. The king eradicated poverty, housed the homeless, taught the ignorant, ended class exploitation by abolishing the nobility and imprisoning the corrupt, and established a highly respected guild of doctors that recently figured out how to cure the plague. There are no brigands because there is enough wealth for everyone to live comfortably; hiding in the woods and taking trinkets from people simply doesn’t make any sense for anyone but the desperate, and the people are not desperate. Evil is a weed, explains the teenager. It grows in cracked roads and crumbling houses and forgotten corners, rooted in indifference and watered by suffering. But the king demands that broken things be mended and suffering people be made well.
No evil lives in this kingdom, says the teenager. It starved to death before I was born.
Every once in a while, when I’m feeling down, I go and look at the notes on this post and they make me feel a lot better. This is the energy I want to carry into 2018.
For those who need to carry it into 2019.
Radical New Idea:
A female character who is a cold, relentless leader, always pragmatic, and able to make whatever hard decisions need to be made in order to ensure success and survival, tremendously skilled and devastatingly efficient at her job, tragically terrible at being overtly nice to people, who is also not evil and is still fundamentally a good person.
The Moral of This Post is: No matter how genius  your idea is, Hiromu Arakawa probably already did it, and she did it better than you could ever hope to.
