“Is that what you call it?” Belle replied with the tone of a matron rather than her mere twenty-five years. “taking without a person’s consent is called ‘stealing’, my fine fellow. And you most certainly didn’t have my consent.” She paused, examining the young man before her.

With a sigh, pursed her lips, curiosity insatiable, as well as wondering just what caused the man— no, boy more wasn’t it? —to take without asking.

“What’s your name, lad? I’ll not do anything to you if you just give me back what’s mine, but I‘m a little curious why you took it in the first place.”

Belle held her laughter in as best she could, clearing her throat as she took a step forward in case she might help the man. “The part where you fell from the rafters, dropped your mask, or hid in the corner behind the costumes when that pretty brunette came back to see what that thud was?” She inquired, tilting her head as she held out aforementioned mask. “Though you probably want this, don’t you?”

“Would you like me to check if the coast is clear, or just pretend I didn’t see anything–are you alright, by the by?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Everyone has conviction in something, it’s just a matter of what wouldn’t you say?” Belle replied with a grin, looking down to sift through the books in her arms. She cleared her throat, tilting her head with a raised brow. “Though I suppose with years of living in a small town not going anywhere, you end up making a store of dreams, and then when the chance comes, you seek to get them where you can…”

She paused, chuckling softly. “After all, a life spent not taking risks is a bit dull, isn’t it? Maybe that’s where my ‘conviction’ as you call it, comes from.”
