It’s 3am and Amy Santiago is still awake. She’s been awake for 24 hours and she’s exhausted, but her mind won’t stop racing. So much has happened.

She’s engaged.

And to think, she used to hate Halloween.

Beside her, Jake is quietly snoring, curled towards her with a hand still over her stomach. It’s the first time he’s slept peacefully since he came home. By this time, most nights, she’s woken up at least once to find Jake in a cold sweat, breathing hard and shallow, heart pounding. It’s so frequent that her sleeping subconscious knows when it’s coming and she’s started to wake up a minute or two before Jake does, ready to catch him. But tonight, he’s sleeping. There’s still a smile on his lips, and when Amy shifts slightly to press a kiss to his forehead his fingers tighten briefly against her shirt like he’s afraid she might leave.

She isn’t going anywhere. There’s a ring on her finger to prove that. She’s already making plans in her head for the day there’ll be two. She’s thinking about colors and dresses and floral arrangements and the new binders she’s going to buy to organize everything. She’s thinking about the day she marries Jake, and for the first time it’s not hypothetical.

She shuffles a little closer to Jake, keeping his arm across her middle and resting her left arm across his shoulders and tucking his head under her chin. The diamonds on her finger catch in the red light from Jake’s alarm clock and she moves her hand up and down a little to watch the reflections dance, and when she finally falls asleep it’s with her nose close to her fiance’s hair, his arm now resting loosely across her waist, her new ring glinting against Jake’s back with each steady breath he takes.

The s/m concept of “vanilla” sex is sex devoid of passion. They are saying that there can be no passion without unequal power. That feels very sad and lonely to me, and destructive. The linkage of passion to dominance/subordination is the prototype of the heterosexual image of male-female relationships, one which justifies pornography. Women are supposed to love being brutalized. This is also the prototypical justification of all relationships of oppression—that the subordinate one who is “different” enjoys the inferior position.

this past weekend I hit the road with a couple friends & explored an abandoned mansion that was built in the 1800’s. It was at one time owned by a state senator & general in the War of 1812, who later died in a duel with his cousin. Sometimes you have to just get up and go and you’ll find some of the most beautiful places. Already looking forward to the next mini road trip, wherever that may be.
