The first annual Costumer’s Picnic was held on the Boston Public Garden this Sunday, and I convinced my partner to go with me. I was thrilled to have an opportunity to pull out my old robe a l’anglaise. And he looks pretty dashing in my Thomas Sharpe cosplay, doesn’t he?

Photo by the lovely Janine Lyn!

(PS: you may not be able to tell, but check that jawline: that is in fact a lovely boy in a lovely dress.)

A friend of mine works as a living history tour guide on the Freedom Trail here in Boston, and since their costume had worn out a little they commissioned a new one from me! This was a lot of fun to make, and it looks gorgeous on them. I’m really, really proud of this one.

We did have to sacrifice a little historical accuracy for the sake of comfort and convenience while giving long tours in 80+ degree heat. But most of that we managed to keep hidden, heh.

I’m officially open for commissions! I’m a costume designer as well as being a cosplayer myself, and this is what I love to do. Please take a look at my gallery page if you’d like to see my work, and if you’re interested in commissioning me, I have an FAQ! Don’t hesitate to message me if you have any questions about how I work. I love talking to people!

Hey guys! I’ve put in my two weeks at my current retail job for health reasons, so commissions are about to become my primary source of income. I’ve transferred all of my progress tags over to this blog and in the future I’ll be posting there and reblogging to here instead. It’ll be what this blog was supposed to be haha

If you or anyone you know needs a piece commissioned, lemme know!

your Enjolras cosplay is so beautiful. oh my god. How long did it take you to make the vest?

Avatar

Thank you so much! The base vest itself took around six or eight hours. I can't even begin to estimate how long the trim took, though. All of the measuring, chalking, pinning, REPINNING... I managed to do all of the trim, from start to finish, in ten days. And now I've got some pretty impressive callouses.

I finished my stage vest! I’m so, so proud. I actually decided to change a couple elements of my design. After seeing it so up-close on Broadway, I had to find a balance between the one worn by Mark Uhre, extant military uniforms, and the one I fell in love with as a child - worn by Michael Maguire in 1995.

Vive la Révolution!

Finally draped out a muslin for this dress! A woman is commissioning a dress for her second wedding from my mother and me. She wants it to be a bit more casual, and perhaps something she can wear again, so after a long and drawn out back-and-forth over the design process we landed on this - and I'll admit I'm really fond of those 3/4 circle sleeves. I'm hoping to do it in warm gold silk with a burgundy chiffon overlay, perhaps with a bit of beading. We'll see!

I was fortunate enough to see Les Mis in the front row last night, and you’re damn right I wore my unfinished Enjolras vest. During bows Mark Uhre (the current Enjolras) gave me this huge smile. I nearly melted. We didn’t have time to stagedoor for long before our bus home left, so I couldn’t meet him to tell him how much his performance meant to me (seriously he’s incredible), but we did meet Joe Spieldenner! His exact words, while grinning and laughing, straight killed me: “Thanks for giving us all that love in the front row. I saw your mascara running.” Since I couldn’t tell Mark in person I made sure to mention him in the Instagram post I made, and I WOKE UP THIS MORNING TO NOT ONLY THEM BOTH HAVING LIKED THE SELFIE, BUT TO MARK HAVING LIKED THE VEST TRIM POST. I’M SO DONE. I love it when actors interact with their fans like this. It’s so adorable. Brb crying for about a week.

I spent a truly stupid amount of time looking for the perfect - wait for it - FIFTY YARDS of trim in New York City yesterday. This will be a thing eventually, but I’m sure halfway through I’ll want to give up. [mutters wearily] “Keep the faith… Vive la France…”

I'm working on Enjolras' xylophone vest! I had to overdye the gabardine I got with henna because it was just sliiiightly too bright, and I'm really happy with how it came out. I can't have pockets on the outside, obviously, so I thew a couple on the inside - and they're big enough to fit my little flask, which is the most important thing ;) I'm headed to New York next week to get all the gold braid. I already have my buttons... all ONE HUNDRED of my buttons...

OKAY HONESTLY GOD FUCKING BLESS @marilladesigns. I don’t have a serger, so she ever so graciously let me sit in her apartment while she was out to dinner with her parents so I could make this bodysuit. Which was my first ever bodysuit! Fun times, fun times.

I decided to cover the top (and conceal the zipper) with feathers rather than the way Colin Morgan’s texture was done, which I swear to god looks like they just stitched on zipties. This earned me the friend group nickname of “smol birb”. Adorable.
