Words are very unnecessary
“Inflammation from Crohn’s disease had connected the tissues of my small intestine and my bladder together via fistula, and I did not want to pee out a roast chicken.”
Eating is about more than just nutrition. Eating makes us human. Read Andrew Chapman’s powerful new essay on living without food here.
The way so many "feminist" retellings actually give their women less agency makes me want to bite someone
So there’s actually a very good explanation for this!
Many pieces of classic literature were written before any form of unified feminist movement, such as Pride and Prejudice, Little Women, etc. They express feminist values and a lot of social commentary that’s cutting edge even today. But their best qualities lay in the lack of precedent. They weren’t writing according to qualifications of some political ideal, they wrote about real life.
The best part about Pride and Prejudice is Charlotte Lucas marrying a man she doesn’t like because it’s her safest option. Because she’s afraid. Or Lydia being abandoned by her parents and consequently being groomed by an older man. Or Elizabeth being her father’s favorite because she dislikes her mother and laughs at society with him.
Or in Little Women, when Amy burns Jo’s book in selfish rage. Or when Meg happily marries and lives a very traditional life. Jo selling her hair and crying about it later. Jo marrying her professor over Laurie because she knows he truly loves her, not just an idealized fantasy.
These are well-written wonderful plot points that exceed a lot of feminist modern retellings because they’re accurate rather than ideal to a certain image of what women should be in a story. There’s no power ballad playing as they reconsider these options, no faux tender moment as they change their minds and make the politically informed choice.
Modern pseudo feminist lit treats women as vehicles for their opinions. Classical feminist culture treats women as women.
