The world around Steve slowed down, the sight of his brunette lover beckoning him to follow making his heart stop. He swallowed, putting one foot int front the other other, slowly following the image of Peggy. Bucky’s question blurred, the sound coming to Steve in odd intervals.
All he could focus on was Peggy. He whispered her name, a chocked echo leaving his lips as all emotion drained from his face. He quickly stalked her ghost, following her path until he came to a closed door. He laid his hand on the doorknob, breathing in deep. Flicking his wrist, he turned the doorknob slowly, afraid for what he would see. The door opened, and he ran inside the room, knees giving out as fell in the center of the floor.
Tears began to leak from his eyes as he held what seemed to be the broken body of his ex-lover. Her blood covered his hands, her eyes staring blankly towards the ceiling. A crushed sob left his lips as he brushed back the hair covering her forehead.
“This can’t be happening.. I can’t.. No. Please, just no.”
Steven let out a noise that resembled a hiccup, fat, watery tears flowing down his cheeks as he forced his eyes shut.
His eye-lids flew open, blue eyes widening as he looked down at the body once more. It was a different face this time, but all too familiar. The woman’s thin, blonde hair was pushed back, her skin almost a grey color from sickness.
He took in a harsh breath, shaking his head and back forth. “M- ma? This- this isn’t even possible.”
“You could’ve done more to save me, Steven.. I am so disappointed in you.”
Her dull blue eyes faded, rolling back as she disintegrated into dust in Steve’s hands.
That was when the screaming began. His mouth fell open, an animalistic growl turning into a heartbroken screech. His mind turned fuzzy as the insane visions repeated in his mind, and he began to back into the wall. As he continued to sob, the concrete floors turned into mush, snow covering the room from all corners.
And time slowed once more as Steve saw the body fall from the sky- or perhaps, the train.
Bucky’s body hit the ground in front of him, blood leaking from where his arm was missing. Steve curled into a ball at the sight, continuing to scream at the top of his lungs.
“Why didn’t you grab me, Steve? You could’ve saved me. This is all your fault.”
“I’m sorry! I’m so, so sorry! Just stop it! Stop it!”
Steve grabbed his hair with hands covered in blood, pulling and tearing as much as he could as his head shook. Harsh whispers began to ring in his ears, “You could’ve saved us!”. It was pounding in his head as he screamed into the abyss. Every moment flashed in his mind, all the deaths and all the destruction.
“You could have saved us!”
Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.
His body seized up, the screams growing impossiblt louder. “NO!” A growl left his mouth, tears continuing to stream down his face. A tear fell past his lips, the salt entering his mouth. The screaming suddenly stopped, a chuckle leaving instead. He grabbed his stomach, beginning to laugh hysterically.
“Bucky, Bucky, Bucky.” A taunt, leaving his mouth as he continued to laugh. “I could have saved you!” His laughter completely wracked his body, leaving him to shake on the floor. “He thinks you’re crazy.” An ominous voice whispered to him. “You’re going crazy.”
More laughter left his lips, becoming so powerful it was almost silent. “Buckyyy! Why did I let you fall?” His words were almost incoherant because of his maniacal laughter.
Then, all of a sudden, his laughter stopped- all emotion leaving his face.
And the screaming began once more.
