The two agents left after hearing what Peggy had to say, feeling too awkward around the Captain. The door shut quietly, but Steve seemed to not even realize that the others were even in the room. He stepped over to the bed-ridden agent quickly, grabbing her hand tightly.

No words were spoken- the room was completely silent. Steve looked up at Peggy, still holding tightly onto her hand.

“I almost lost you- again.”

Flashes of her funeral zoomed through his head- memories of losing his only love. He couldn’t bare to have to deal with that feeling of extreme sadness and sense of failure.

His thumb drew circles on the back of her hand, all while he was looking down. “I- I just got you back, Pegs.” He looked up, eyes a little glossy. He wasn’t afraid to lose his cool in front of his love- in fact, besides Bucky, she was the only one he wasn’t afraid to do so in front so.

“I gave up so much to be with you. And if I lost you because I wasn’t paying attention- I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself.”

Steve smirked, the feeling of her arms wrapping tight around him making him chuckle. He kicked the stand up, revving the bike's engine before taking off.

They quickly sped off, weaving through the packed streets in order to race to the diner. The wind blew through their hair, and they soon arrived to their destination. Steve got off the bike first, soon helping Callie off.

Happy Birthday, Steve!

Steve grinned- a bright grin that no one had ever seen on his face since he had woken up from the ice. The captain grabbed the handler’s hand, intertwining his fingers with hers as he led her down the stairs. “I don’t know if you have any idea of how excited I am about tonight- but as a hint, it’s a lot. I don’t think I’ve been this excited for anything in a very long time.”

He trailed off, the smile dropping from his face as he drifted into remembrance. Soon enough, he shook himself out of it, smiling once more. “Let’s go dancing, doll.” Their laughs echoed in the streets as they rushed to the hall.

Steve's cheeks turned a rosy color, and he couldn’t help but shyly smile down at the Doctor. “I-uh, I’m glad you think so.” He was beginning to gain more confidence, Charlie’s little compliments giving him the motivation he needed. “I’m really glad you were working today- I’m excited to get the chance to know such a beautiful dame.”

He swallowed the urge to apologize for his flirtatious remark, waiting for her to respond before reacting on it. “I’m surprised you haven’t dated much. Figured a girl like you would’ve been taken long before now. You seem like a real catch.”

Wow, Steve.

“Uh, I figured we could take the subway into Brooklyn- it’s kind of a long walk from here.” He chuckled, smoothly dipping his arm from her elbow so his fingers intertwined with hers.

Shit.

The first word to pop into Steve’s head as he saw the look on Bucky’s face. Steve smiled sheepishly, shaking his head at Bucky’s question. Honestly, he just wanted this year to go by as smoothly as possible.

“Listen, Buck. It doesn’t matter. Just a bunch of jocks who think they’re better than everyone.” He threw his lunch in the bin beside them, sitting down beside his friend. “You’ll be proud of me, though- didn’t try to fight back on something that I’d obviously lose at. I just walked away.”

Probably won’t next time.

“I know, that’s extremely rare.” He couldn’t help but chuckle, despite the situation. But hearing the pure venom in Bucky’s voice made Steve sober up.

He sighed, shrugging forward. “It really isn’t a big deal, Buck. I- I can take care of myself. Besides, it don’t hurt too bad. This bruise will be gone before you know it.” The small blonde playfully elbowed his friend, “Lighten up, jerk. I don’t care about it.”

But, he did.

Not like he’d tell Buck that, though.

Steve stood up, quickly, with his mouth agape. Staring at her in disbelief, his sadness turned to rising anger. “You think I’m trying to make you upset?! God dammit, Charlie! This is EXACTLY why we wouldn’t work out in the first place!”

His pale face gained a rosy color, blood rushing to his face as all the RAGE and HATRED from their past came bubbling up once more. “I don’t know what changed in you, Charlotte. But one day, everything turned. And it was all about YOU.”

“You don’t think I was upset? That I had bad days?! I CAME to you! I TALKED to you. But no, as soon as something upset you in the least, you turned back to drugs. Didn’t even give me a FUCKING chance. And then,” Steve chuckled darkly, his anger raising to a whole new level, as he finally was able to tell her what he really thought. “You had the NERVE to try and blame it on me! That I was never there for you, and you had no choice- that i didn’t GIVE you a choice.”

“And instead of trying to work it out, which i was MORE than willing to do. For you, I might add. You just- ran away! You LEFT me. Not the other way around! So, don’t come down here, and tell me that I’m not allowed to be upset. Because, really, I have a much better reason than you do.”

“You weren’t here- for a YEAR, Charlie. A year! Then you come back, and you don’t even act like you’re upset to see me in the slightest of ways! Do you have any idea how much that KILLS me?! It’s like you don’t even C A R E- if you even did in the first place!”

Steve began to pace, shaking his head as he waked from the railing.

“You don’t have the RIGHT to order me around anymore. Don’t even try. I can’t- I can’t.” Steve broke, looking darkly at Charlie. All of the regret, sadness, love, and anger he held for her shined in his eyes. “I can’t trust you. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to again.”

“You BROKE me. Left me even more messed up than I already was.”

Steve scuffed his shoes against the ground, clenching his jaw.

“I moved on once you packed up and left in the middle of the night. I moved on once I figured out that you weren’t EVER coming back.”

“So why did you?”

Happy Birthday, Steve!

Steve nodded, grinning down at her. “You always look beautiful, Amelia. There’s never a day that goes by when that thought isn’t in my head.”  He reached for her hand, lifting it to kiss her knuckles lightly. He brought it back down, still holding onto it. “We should probably go to the club, could be getting packed already.”

As much as he was hesitant to go swing dancing again, due to the problems when he was skinny and frail,  he was actually really excited to go out with Amelia. He finally had the chance to show off his girl to the world, along with doing something reminiscent. “I figured we could go out to eat afterwards, then come back and relax?”

Steve closed his eyes, humming in satisfaction as her fingertips trailed lightly down the side of his face. His voice, almost an octave lower, whispered down at the sniper. “Then we should probably go.” He smiled, a small smile that showed his concentration was getting lost in the thought of her.

He reached down to grab her hand, kissing her quickly before leading them out of the apartment.

Steve sighed at Jack’s question, the question being so simple yet so hard to answer. “I, uh..” He coughed, awkwardly covering his mouth to block it. “It’s a very long story, one that I really wouldn’t like to repeat. I should wait to tell it when Peggy’s well enough to listen.” None of you would believe me, anyways.

The hours ticked by in silence, Steve staring longingly out the window. His eyes reflected a torn man, one who isn’t sure of his regrets. The two agents noticed this, choosing to be quiet in respect to the Captain.

The door opened, Howard entering in a Stark fashion. Steve chuckled at his reaction, walking up to hug his old friend. “I’ve missed you, Howard. Hasn’t quite been the same without you. And as for an explanation, well, you’ll have to wait just like everybody else.” He quickly sobered up, sticking his hands on his hips.

“Peggy. How is she?” His blue eyes showed worry, fear, and guilt. He should’ve been able to take that bullet for her; he should've seen it.

“She’s fine, Cap. Pegs is a strong woman, you know this.” Howard chuckled at his friend’s worry. “I can take you to see her, if you’d like.”

Steve quickly nodded his head, Howard and himself leaving to head to the room where Peggy was moved to. The blonde threw the doors open, jogging to Peggy’s side and grabbing her hand.

“How are you feelin’, doll?”

Steve breathed in, nodding his head as he helped his friend up. “Don’t know why you’re asking me, Buck. I should be asking you.” The captain looked at where the magical ball hit the sniper, finding nothing that was physically wrong. “We need to get to regroup and head back to the tower. Whatever that was isn’t here anymore.”

Steve, once again in his guarded, “Captain America” mode, began to lead Bucky and himself out of the facility. The Hydra soldiers they had seen before all lay on the ground dead, looking like they had been for quite a long time.

“I don’t like this, Buck. What on earth could do this?” Even after the trickster was gone, mind games were still being played. Had these soldiers been dead all along, or had himself and Bucky just been in here for a long time?

The Captain switched on his com, strutting down the hall quickly. “Romanov, Wilson, come in.” He only heard murmured static in response. Steve sighed in frustration, repeating himself. He and Bucky finally crossed the entrance, exiting into the cold, dark forest. And sudden;y, the com sparked to life.

“Rogers! We’ve been trying to get a hold of you for hours! Do you come in?” Natasha’s voice echoed across the line.

“I hear ya, Nat. Must of not had signal in the old Hydra base. Regroup and meet us at the quinjet- you too, Sam.”

Steve continued to make his way down the hills, continuing to let Bucky lean against him for support. They quickly made it to the quinjet, already seeing Sam and Natasha inside. Nat took off as soon as the two of them entered, the ramp shutting behind them.

A small body sat in the seat across from her, long scratches and deep bruises covering his skin. His frequent trips to and from the solitary room were spent in a straight jacket, which resulted in him flailing to escape. Time spent away from Bucky was not good for him, as the girl was the only source of calm in the facility- at least for him.

The young brunette and small blonde had a way with each other- most of the staff hadn’t seen anything like it. Luckily, they eventually let the two room together, and they haven’t regretted it yet.

The blonde looked up, a small, fiery, glare in his eyes. “You ask that every time, and I always have the same answer. I feel insane. Because I am.”

“I have the same dream every night. Well, I guess not the same exact dream. But, I’m big. And I save people.” He sighed, looking at the corner where Bucky was staying. “I’m not a bad guy in my dreams. I’m the good guy.”

He glanced away from Bucky, looking at Charlie once again. “Bucky’s the only one who really makes me feel nor-” His voice cracked, his eyes following the shadow standing behind Charlie.

The Winter Soldier.

Steve’s heart sped up, and he began to shake his head wildly. “No, nononono, not him, anyone but him. He’s going to kill me. Then he’ll kill you. You have to get out of here, get out, get out, get out, get OUT.”

His head lay in his hands, fingers scratching and pulling at his scalp. “Don’t let him kill me, please.”

Steven coughed quietly, trying not to draw attention to himself as he made his way to his locker. The dial clicked, and he opened to the door to his locker. Grabbing his lunch, he quickly shut the door and tried to make it to the end off the hallway without any problems. Like that would've actually happened.

"Hey, Rogers. Decided to make it to school today, huh? What, your ma didn't wanna put with you?"

Steve sighed, turning around to face the source of the taunt. Of course, it was one of the jocks. He sure was glad that Buck didn't hang out with this guy- Cramer was a major jerk. He annoyingly smiled at Steve, waiting for him to say something back. Steve rolled his eyes, his frail arms holding his lunch tighter.

"Sorry, Cramer. I didn't know my presence offends your ego so much." A small glare added to the fiery attitude of the smaller guy, causing Cramer to flare with anger.

"You know what, Stevie?" The jock grabbed him by the collar, bringing him up to his level. "I don't think I appreciate your attitude." And with that, Cramer dropped him back to the floor, promptly socking him in the jaw. Steve fell to the floor, the contents on his lunch getting crushed by the bully's feet. "Now, run back to your little guard dog and see what he says about your pathetic little ass."

Instead of fighting back like usual, Steve grumbled, grabbed his lunch, and quickly got outside. He was smart enough to realize that he wasn't going to win a fight with a jock, especially with his goons by his side. Plus, he really didn't want to go back to his mother sporting more bruises than usual.

The blonde sighed, seeing James already sitting and waiting for him at their spot. He kept his head down, walking with his flattened lunch under his arm. Hopefully Buck won't react to bad, Steve mused. It's just a tiny bruise.

Steve's brow furrowed, looking at the shape-shifter with distaste. His gloved hand rubbed the bruised spot on his cheek, hoping to numb the pain before talking to this Azedan character.

“What’s the point of all this, then? Just for fun?” Steve’s voice turned venomous, his lips spewing out words in anger. “You made me see all those visions- all those nightmares for a little bit of fun?!” His free hand clenched into a fist, watching as the figure turned back into Peggy.

“Oh, you didn’t like my gift?” Her painted red lips held a wicked grin, her voice more sultry as ever. “Come on, Steven. Do not be angry at me for just unveiling what your mind holds subconsciously.” The figure transformed back into Loki, smirking at the two soldiers.

“Mind games are fun, and I do think I’m going to enjoy playing with you two.” He snapped his fingers, flicking his wrist elegantly before disappearing.

Steve tensed, eyes searching every corner of the room for a trace of the mysterious persona. “Buck.. This is weird. We should regroup and find a way to take this thing down.” Turning to Bucky as he was talking, Steve suddenly gasped, feeling a hand move down his torso.

“Oh, Steven. Don’t you miss her? Don’t you miss me?” Peggy’s voice whispered seductively in his ear, but he knew better. He closed his eyes tightly, trying to block out the voice. “I know she missed you. All those nights, crying herself to sleep because you were too proud to not be some self-sacrificial hero.”

Steve looked at Bucky with watery, bloodshot eyes. “W-We need to get out of here. Now.” His voice cracked, and eyes closed once more.

“Think of what could have been. You could’ve been happy. Even more, she would’ve been happy.” A lone tear slipped down the Captain’s cheek, chuckling beginning to echo in his ear.

The whispering stopped, Azedan suddenly appearing once more in front of them. “Oh, boys. I can keep this act up all day. The question is... can you?”

Steve took in a deep breath, closing his eyes as he concentrated on the feel of her. It had been too long since he had gotten to hold her like this. Too long. Between his work with the Avengers and her work with S.H.I.E.L.D., it’s just been too hectic to see each other. And it killed him that he couldn’t be with her everyday.

He placed a chaste kiss on her neck, rubbing his hands softly against her curves. “You, uh, almost ready? I’m sure Bea is going to excited to see us again.”

The world around Steve slowed down, the sight of his brunette lover beckoning him to follow making his heart stop. He swallowed, putting one foot int front the other other, slowly following the image of Peggy. Bucky’s question blurred, the sound coming to Steve in odd intervals.

All he could focus on was Peggy. He whispered her name, a chocked echo leaving his lips as all emotion drained from his face. He quickly stalked her ghost, following her path until he came to a closed door. He laid his hand on the doorknob, breathing in deep. Flicking his wrist, he turned the doorknob slowly, afraid for what he would see. The door opened, and he ran inside the room, knees giving out as fell in the center of the floor.

Tears began to leak from his eyes as he held what seemed to be the broken body of his ex-lover. Her blood covered his hands, her eyes staring blankly towards the ceiling. A crushed sob left his lips as he brushed back the hair covering her forehead.

“This can’t be happening.. I can’t.. No. Please, just no.”

Steven let out a noise that resembled a hiccup, fat, watery tears flowing down his cheeks as he forced his eyes shut.

“Steven..”

His eye-lids flew open, blue eyes widening as he looked down at the body once more. It was a different face this time, but all too familiar. The woman’s thin, blonde hair was pushed back, her skin almost a grey color from sickness.

He took in a harsh breath, shaking his head and back forth. “M- ma? This- this isn’t even possible.”

“You could’ve done more to save me, Steven.. I am so disappointed in you.”

Her dull blue eyes faded, rolling back as she disintegrated into dust in Steve’s hands.

That was when the screaming began. His mouth fell open, an animalistic growl turning into a heartbroken screech. His mind turned fuzzy as the insane visions repeated in his mind, and he began to back into the wall. As he continued to sob, the concrete floors turned into mush, snow covering the room from all corners.

And time slowed once more as Steve saw the body fall from the sky- or perhaps, the train.

Bucky’s body hit the ground in front of him, blood leaking from where his arm was missing. Steve curled into a ball at the sight, continuing to scream at the top of his lungs.

“Why didn’t you grab me, Steve? You could’ve saved me. This is all your fault.”

“I’m sorry! I’m so, so sorry! Just stop it! Stop it!”

Steve grabbed his hair with hands covered in blood, pulling and tearing as much as he could as his head shook. Harsh whispers began to ring in his ears, “You could’ve saved us!”. It was pounding in his head as he screamed into the abyss. Every moment flashed in his mind, all the deaths and all the destruction.

Caused by him.

“You could have saved us!”

Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

His body seized up, the screams growing impossiblt louder. “NO!” A growl left his mouth, tears continuing to stream down his face. A tear fell past his lips, the salt entering his mouth. The screaming suddenly stopped, a chuckle leaving instead. He grabbed his stomach, beginning to laugh hysterically.

“Bucky, Bucky, Bucky.” A taunt, leaving his mouth as he continued to laugh. “I could have saved you!” His laughter completely wracked his body, leaving him to shake on the floor. “He thinks you’re crazy.” An ominous voice whispered to him. “You’re going crazy.”

More laughter left his lips, becoming so powerful it was almost silent. “Buckyyy! Why did I let you fall?” His words were almost incoherant because of his maniacal laughter.

Then, all of a sudden, his laughter stopped- all emotion leaving his face.

“I let you die.”

And the screaming began once more.

Steve sucked in a breath, the sight of the lone, crazed gunman actually striking slight fear in his gut. Now, Steve Rogers has seen a lot, lived through even more. Nightmares plague his sleep every single night, and yet he still wakes up brave. As much as he could, anyways.

He was still just a man, after all.

But the sight of this man, obviously acting insane, was enough to make his heart beat wildly from the scare. It was rare, to say the least, for him to let it show. Watching the gunman laugh hysterically from nothing didn’t particularly scare him- no.

He feared what they would find deeper into the base.

“I don’t know, Buck..” The blonde super-soldier stepped over the body, the insane laughter echoing in his ears, making him cringe. “Guess we should go find out.”

The two of them went deeper into the base, the blank hallway light’s flickering. The eeriness of the situation was intensified by a sudden cry breaking into the silence. Steve gave Bucky a wide-eyed look of alarm, quickly running off to find the source of the scream.

His red boot slammed into a door, breaking it down as he chased the voice, only to come across another soldier laying on the floor. This one was pointing at the wall, shaking his head wildly. “No. No. No. Please god no, it wasn’t my fault. Please. I didn’t mean to.” The man was clearly panicking, tears streaming down his face and and backing himself further into the wall.

Steve walked towards the direction of the man’s point, slowly stalking to the other wall. Peaking around the corner of room, and seeing nothing, Steve could only chalk up the man’s actions as complete insanity.

What else could be the cause of it?
