Endangered langblrs #1

As announced in the last post I want to introduce you from time to time to some endangered langblrs here on tumblr. I also hope that these posts will inspire you to send more langblrs in that deal with endangered, regional, minority, lesser-used and extinct etc. languages.

Low Saxon

An endangered language in Northern Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark. The mother tongue of my humble self.

Greenlandic

It is not really endangered, but since this blog also deals with smaller and lesser-used languages I include it here, too.

@learngreenlandic (also a blog of me)

Maltese

Also a lesser-used language but still worth to be included here.

American Sign Language (ASL)

Miskito

An endangered language in Nicaragua and Honduras.

Navajo

An indigenous language in the US and Mexico.

Irish (Gaeilge)

A Celtic language spoken in Ireland.

Scottish-Gaelic (Gàidhlig)

A Celtic language spoken in Scotland.

Welsh (Cymraeg)

A Celtic language spoken in Wales.

Northern Sami

A Sami language that is spoken in Finland, Sweden and Norwegian.

Wikitongues.org

The blog of the Wikitongues project, providing videos of people speaking all the languages in the world.

This is so far a rather short list. I hope there will be more people sending in blogs that write about anything other than majority languages. In order to get that call and message around, please reblog this post as much as you can. ;)

Just a quick shoutout to @endangeredlanguagechallenge for including me in the list, thanks. Check it out!

Quick Update

My short vacation has kept me from learning but don't fret I'm still here and I'll return to regular language updates soon.

Miskito- The Miskitos are a Central American people found predominantly in Nicaragua and Honduras, of mixed Native American and African descent. In the colonial period the British made alliances with various Miskito tribes, attacking Spanish colonies in return for a certain degree of freedom. The Miskitos were never truly be colonized by a European power, only begin annexed by Nicaragua in 1894. Today most Miskito work as fisherman, continuing to speak their traditional language also called Miskito

After much hassle here they are, in their full handwritten glory, the full transcripts to Easy Miskito! They came out a bit lo-res but they come out clear once you zoom in. If there is any interest I’ll type them up (I’ll probably do it anyway so just ask). Feedback would be greatly appreciated whether something is illegible or needs to be cleared up, errors, etc. let me know.

Update #2

I’m currently having trouble uploading the transcript I promised due to the way I recorded them in OneNote on my Surface so there’s no share feature and I’m going to try to do it in a different way tomorrow. I’ll leave you with a reblog of the only Miskito language reference I could find on tumblr.

Initial Impression

I still am studying over the transcripts  to see if I can recognize a pattern.  So far I got a few down but I post  them when I’m ready.  I like it so far it seems like there  isn’t too much of a vocabulary but the video is, I assume, informal speech.  I also recognized that they integrate  some Spanish and English in with Miskito, I thought that was interesting.  There’s not much else to say  because I’ve only gotten so far with  the first of the transcripts. Miskito is definitely an interesting language. I hope I can post daily especially on the  language itself but I’ll try and keep  on updating as often as I can. (Personal note: I wonder if Miskito can benefit  from a different writing system, maybe Hangul)
