The entire atmosphere and mood seemed to have shifted, and Eric felt like he was going to be lynched any moment now. Though none of the men did anything the like, the silence surrounding them all was eery and nerve-wrecking. Had he managed to escape the German bullets only to run straight into the French ones? Shit, he was barely twenty, he still had his entire life ahead of him! Surprisingly, though, Jedi broke the silence and stepped up to him, and in the next moment he even felt the warmth of her hand on his. Reluctantly he started to walk again – but not without a cold shiver running down his spine at Alphonse’s words.
“I’m not lyin’…” Eric said quietly. The grip on Jedi’s hand tightened. So once again she was saving his life. He allowed himself to take a deep breath, although he could feel the other men’s gazes in his back. At least it wasn’t daggers.
image
The entire walk happened in silence, and Eric couldn’t help but wonder if they were going to shoot him once he entered the camp. No bullet came, though – he was still alive. Exhausted, but alive. He turned around to the men behind him for a moment, but then decided to talk to the girl by his side instead. “Where exactly are we going now?”

Jedi didn’t see an issue with all of this. Considering the fact that he was a British soldier, he sounded British, and he was wearing the uniform? She didn’t see the issue, or why the men seemed to feel that it was necessary to speak with one another while they were out in the open. She could hear the others muttering under their breath when she started to lead Eric away, and she could hear something about the man being born in Germany, but still, he was British?

Image

Maybe she was thinking too easily about this and wasn’t recognizing the danger, but from the look of Alphonse, he wasn’t about to give the order to have this man killed.

She glanced up when she felt the grip on her hand tightening, glancing around to find the men still staring daggers into the soldier’s chest, even her own father was looking wary of what was happening here. Weird.

She looked up at the question, tilting her head as she processed the words, trying to figure them out. “Safe.” She spoke. “Safe… house.”

She continued to lead him through the fields into the forest beyond it, walking a, to her, familiar path, reaching up to push away branches and under growth. The location they were walking to wasn’t so much a safe house, as a safe cabin. A small ramshackle cabin stood hidden among the trees. The window didn’t appear to be lit, but the curtains did seem to show some sign of movement.

“It’s us!” Alphonse called out, walking a little faster to be able to get to the door. “Open the door!”

“Safe.” Jedi reassured Eric again, stepping into the cabin.

Inside, two more men were waiting, one of them nodded to Alphonse and pulled open the hatch to the hidden basement, eyeing Eric curiously.

Eric shot her an annoyed side glance. Did she seriously think he didn’t know who Stephen King was? He wasn’t living under some rock! Still the thief decided to not comment at least on that part of the conversation. Instead he took a long sip of the milkshake again. A couple more of those arguments and he would need more milkshakes…
image
His teeth sank into his bottom lip for a moment. “Don’t read the book, then ye don’t have tha’ issue.” He shrugged his shoulders. Easy as that. “Seriously, Jedi,” he sighed, “I don’t give a shite ‘bout books. They look noice, bu’ tha’s all. No’ ev’ryone shares the same int’rests, y’know.” Perhaps that had been yet another aspect leading to their break-up. “You loike books, I loike films. Le’s jus’ keep it at tha’, a’righ’?”

Jedi shot him a look at the comment, tilting her head slightly. What the hell was his deal here? WAs he trying to blame her for this subject? Was that what was going on here? As much as she wanted to be the bigger person, the only thing she was feeling right now was spite. Which, she realized full well, wasn’t the right emotion to give into right now. But it was oh so freaking tempting to do so.

“Then why bring it up in the first place if you didn’t want to talk about it?” Jesus Christ, men… sometimes talking to them was like pulling teeth! She got the urge to fill the awkward silence, too, but that didn’t mean that she was going to talk about something that didn’t interest her? Well, if that were to happen, she would at least feign an interest. Maybe Eric had been right all those years ago when the whole relationship had started. The age difference was just too big. It had never mattered to her, but in hindsight? Maybe there was some truth to it. and that sucked.

“Okay, fine, whatever, let’s leave it at that.” Yep, frustration was starting to settle now. And again the thought that this was a mistake was settling in.

Fuck it. “You sure you want me along? Because at the rate we're going, we're likely to kill one another once we get into the car."

Eric’s gaze hardened as he looked over at Jedi. Was she implying something? Maybe you should read more. What on earth did she mean with that? That he was dumb, not educated enough? Really, he didn’t need this from someone who didn’t have half as much experience in life like the thief had.
image
He was watching Jedi carefully and even took the book from her, but it ended up on the coffee table between them barely as second later with a muttered, “Stephen Who?” accompanying it. He took a sip from the milkshake. “It’s in English. Besoides, no’ all’f us go’ such a feckin’ great imagination. I don’t care ‘bout books.” He pointed his finger at Jeid. “A’so, films’re be’er ‘cause ye don’t have ta invest so much toime in ‘em. Can easily squeeze ‘em in, even when ye’re busy.”

“King.” Jedi repeated. “He’s a thriller/horror novelist. His books are pretty good. Maybe you’ve seen one of his movies before. Misery, 1408, The Mist, Cell?” Hell, she didn’t even know anymore whether he liked that kind of stuff. She didn’t know a lot of things about him anymore. Just like he didn’t know a lot about her anymore. Sometimes she still wondered how something like that could have happened.

Image

Her eyes narrowed a fraction when Eric pointed at her, trying her best to keep her cool about this. Whether he meant it in that way or not, she couldn’t help but feel annoyed about the fact that he was bitching about books. “Good thing you don’t need a huge imagination… most of the stuff is written out on the pages.” she shrugged her shoulders. “That’s a matter of opinion whether films are better. Especially as most films butcher the books they use as their source material. Look at the Artemis Fowl one, that’s a complete shitshow.”

Were they really doing this? Were they really arguing whether movies or books were better?

❛ ran away? ❜ michael echoed, the confusion visible on his face.
he didn’t know. of course he didn’t—if he had, then jedi wouldn’t be wandering aimlessly. her body would have been found. he felt a twinge of pity for the girl, looking over to her as she argued against deaf ears.
he followed after the priest, trying to find a way to explain the situation when he was lead to the bathroom. shower. food. that sounded so nice.
❛ i don’t have any allergies. ❜
one of the perks of having satan as your father, he supposed. he then felt as if a bitter taste entered his mouth upon thinking of his father. he had abandoned him. he tried not to think of it as he stepped into the bathroom, barely giving jedi a nod of acknowledgement.
the water soon cleansed him of his anger—as well as the filth that had stuck to him. he was lucky the blood had been covered by the dirt, else father forthill would likely have had many questions that he did not know how to answer.
he stayed in there far longer than he meant to, lost in his thoughts. when he finally emerged, he felt a sense of relief he hadn’t felt since his time with ms. mead. he then frowned. he missed her dearly.
image
he reached up to mess with his hair, giving himself one last glance in the mirror before he stepped out to meet the priest and the girl in the kitchen. he didn’t know why he was so nervous.
❛ i didn’t take too long, did i? ❜

Sitting in the kitchen, Jedi drew up her legs to cross them underneath her, watching Forthill going back and forth with pans and batter for the pancakes, obviously in his element as he started to whistle a nameless tune. It was surreal seeing him like this.

He was a family friend, but never before had she seen him in this manner. She couldn’t help but wonder how he was this cheerful all the time, how could he keep up his job in this way, knowing that he was going to have to hear all the stuff that people got up too when the went into confession and things like that? She didn’t get it. But at the same time, she couldn’t help but admire the man.

Not just for doing what he did, but also for knowing that he was willing to help Michael and provide him with food and a shower and some fresh clothes, despite him being a virtual stranger to him. It was just surreal.

By the time that Michael came into the kitchen, Forthill had already finished a couple of pancakes, a small stack waiting on a plate on the table. He smiled as he turned, shaking his head. “No, of course not.” He commented, putting another pancake on the plate. “I didn’t expect you to finish within a few minutes.” he indicated one of the chairs.. “Please, sit. Eat.”

He turned back to the stove, pouring another few ladles of batter into the pan. “So, you said that you knew Jedi?” he asked. “How did you meet her?”

Jedi looked downright miserable, picking at a thread on her jeans. “He can’t see me. I tried everything, but he’s ignoring what’s happening.” she said quietly.

“Feathers…she’s running low.” Joel sighed a little, “And she wants another update on the bow Jake has been working on.”
“He’s been working on it…finding the right wood to match has been a bit of a struggle, but I think he’ll manage it.” Tommy told him as the both got on the horses.
“Good. It’ll be a nice surprise, definitely cheer her up.” Joel urged his horse forward, “You can start by letting her borrow that book of yers.”
“Gladly. It’ll be nice to talk to someone about it who hasn’t seen the movies.” Tommy smiled brightly, “Come on let’s get this done with. It looks like it’s gonna storm later today. I wanna make sure everyone gets in on time.”
“Yessir!” Joel smiled kicking his horse into a gallop following his brother. Should be a simple job. Though the cold tended to slow herds down. He sighed feeling a knot in his stomach as he watched a black bird fly over head. He shook his head…he was too old for superstitions…even if his mother was never wrong.

Steering his horse into the direction of the trail, Tommy sat back in the saddle, looking up at the sky himself. He didn’t like the sight of the sky, the way that it was looking like there was going to be heavy snowfall. Sometimes, he missed the good old days of there being weather reports and knowing almost exactly what kind of weather to be expected. “Looks like it’s gonna snow later.” he commented.

Not that he minded it as much, as long as they weren’t going to end up being stuck in a blizzard. That would end up making things a little more difficult. He spotted the black bird flying overhead as well, letting out a soft snort. “You remember that rhyme mom always told us?” He asked. “How’s it go again? One of sorrow, two for mirth or somethin’ like that?”

Not that they really needed to fill the silence between them, but sometimes, it was just nice to talk while going down the trails. Reconnecting with his brother had been something Tommy didn’t expect was going to happen after Sarah, and for him to bring along Ellie for it? Well, that had made things a little more complicated with his protective streak. And now Jedi? It seemed like his brother still knew how to surprise him.

As their journey down the trail progressed, the skies were getting darker and darker. The first of the snow was starting to fall. “We might wanna take shelter, wait for this to blow over.” Tommy commented, glancing up. “I don’t think we’re gonna make it back in time.”

All eyes on him, and Eric felt like his legs were giving in any moment now. The grip on the rifle tightened, his gaze shooting from person to person, and back over to Jedi. She seemed to be the only one not looking at him judgingly. Maybe she was just happy to have some chocolate.
Now, he could have easily lied and agreed to Alphonse’s question, but it could have also been some sort of trap. He swallowed hard, then slowly shook his head. Going with the truth was probably the best thing to do now…
image
“I–I’s born in Germany,” Eric admitted quietly, speaking English again. “But we moved ‘way a long toime ‘go. I–I’m not a traitor, I’m with the British army, I’m foightin’ for the country I grew up in.” His gaze shifted back to the girl, hoping that at least she was believing him., if not the others.

After the soldier had spoken, no-one said anything for a while, as if they were attempting to size him up, gauging whether he was really telling the truth or not. some of the men were shifting on their feet, another was scratching the back of his neck, every single one of them looking a little unnerved by the news that this soldier had been born in Germany.

The only one who didn’t seem like she was bothered by it, or maybe she just didn’t understand what was bein said fully, was Jedi. Finishing her piece of chocolate, she wiped her hand on her skirt, then stepped forward to take hold of Eric’s hand. “Come.” she said. If you asked her? They had been standing around long enough out in the open. “Come, go.” she started pulling him in the direction they had been walking before.

image

What are you all standing around for?” she asked the rest of the men. “Aren’t we meant to get out of here before more patrols come?”

“Jedi.” her father scolded.

Alphonse chuckled softly, looking at the girl. “It seems she likes you.” he commented, reaching up to stroke his chin in thought. He glanced at her father, who shrugged. “She has a good judge of character…” he said slowly.

“Very well.” he clapped his hands lightly. “We will believe you. But, if you lie, we will deal with you.” He said this in the same tone as if talking about how cute a puppy was. He gave a brief signal for the others to keep walking, starting to take the lead to continue to their camp.

Their carriage was coming to a stop now, ride operator getting them ready to disembark, but it was hard for Loki to tear himself away. Jedi was saying those things he loved to hear, the things that made him feel like he was himself again. Whole again. Not a broken mess or a snarling beast.
image
But Jedi wasn’t having any of his proper goodbye. Nothing left to do but scatter. “That’s a shame.” And when the door was opened, Loki left, forcing himself to not look back. On his way through the exit line, he ran into Heimdall, who had been waiting for him.
Usually, seeing Heimdall cut off his path felt to Loki like seeing a cop show up to your burglary. But this time, for all his ‘fuck that guy’ attitude, he actually went to Heimdall, knowing he knew about most of what happened.
And for his part, Heimdall tried to be sympathetic, not saying anything. He just put an arm around Loki to collect him, leading him out of the park to the beach, where he’d mentioned he wanted to go.

With their carriage coming to a stop, Jedi was gathering up her things, her bag, plushie, the half-eaten pretzel that she didn’t have an appetite for anymore. She didn’t know what was going to happen for this ‘proper goodbye’ but then Loki just doing that? Yep, that was the thing that started the waterworks. the fact that he could walk away so casually like that.

She could only watch, silent tears falling, only stare numbly really as Heimdal appeared and took Loki away. What had just happened? She slowly left the carriage, walking through the exit line and just staring at the back of Loki and Heimdall until they disappeared into the crowd. Fuck, what just happened here… was this really it? Were they done?

Image

It felt like they were done… and she didn’t want them to be.

She walked over to the nearest bench, sinking down on it; trying to figure out where it was that she’d gone wrong. Had she not been clear enough that she loved him? Had she not said the right thing? Or maybe too soon? What just happened here? She couldn't make sense of it. was this her fault or his? Or both?

In the end, after sitting there for a while, she reached into her bag to take out her phone to make the one call she didn’t want to make. “Harry? Can you come pick me up?”

Loki looked a little ashamed of himself. “I don’t know. I really haven’t seen it since I was child. I remember it being beautiful, though. Fountains… sculpture. Ponds and pavilions. But at some point, I outgrew it. I only…” He bit his tongue. “I just took for it granted that it would always be there. Doubtless she tried to teach me, but I just can’t seem to recall. And anyway, it’s not as if I’d be able to find Asgardian flowers here.”
image
“If I can weep so over a lot of silly flowers, then you and I must say a proper goodbye. Like the friends we’re supposed to be. Like you said, know one knows where we’ll be next week.“

“It’s a natural process. We have to find our own ways, our own paths and interests... no matter what our parents attempt to teach us. It’s not your fault for finding other interests beyond the garden.” such was the life of a child, right? Still, the fact that he wouldn’t be able to really create the garden of his mother, that was a sad thought. Especially knowing that Asgard was gone. Which- just fuck. And she thought she had it rough losing her parents.

Image

Jedi couldn’t help but look over now, her eyes red, as she’d been fighting back tears the entire time. “I wouldn’t know what the proper way of saying goodbye is after all this.” she sighed deeply, a numb tone to her voice. “You’ll likely be thriving in your new palace, next week. 50% chance I'll die during that hunting trip I got in a few days.” isn’t hearing the truth lovely? And it’s said with such a numbness, too. As if she’d already resigned herself to that fact.

“You don’t know the half of it. I thought that when I came to this planet, the worst would be humans wanting revenge for New York, or hating me for being alien. But fifty times a day, what do I get? ‘Choke me, daddy,’ ‘step on my throat.’ ‘Oh, by the way, here’s a pornographic drawing of you sinning with your brother,” and “if you don’t DM your address, I guess I’ll just kill myself.’ It’s hideous.“
No, social media was not a good place to learn about humanity.
Talking about the palace calmed him down. “I have no idea, but I hope it’s soon. It’s already looking beautiful. My dream is to build a garden, a bit like the one my mother had… I miss it awfully.”

“Oh believe, I know how it is. I’ve seen comments on social medias of celebrities.” it wasn’t pretty. It was frankly disgusting. “I don’t even know why people think that’s an okay thing to do. It’s kind of gross. I’m pretty sure that you can get filters for comments though. Get that shit out of your comments section. Maybe you should delete the app on your phone for a day or two.”

social media sucked. Jedi was just glad about the fact that she didn’t have to deal with it. Well, not beyond the whole stuff for the store, that was about it. Worst she got on there were complaints.

Even if talking about the palace calmed Loki down, it didn’t really do anything for Jedi. Still sad. Still hating herself. Even with the attempt at a distraction. That was surprising though, Loki wanted to build a garden? “What kind of plants did your mother’s garden have? herbs, maybe? i can get you some Earth herbs if you want?”

Avatar
Loki laughed, still sad, but it was a bad enough idea to be funny. “My followers are animals, all they care about is flesh to feast on. They would hunt me if they could. I don’t want any of them knowing where to start.” He shook his head. Fucking humans.
“They’re really only good to finance New Asgard. We’re building it up from practically nothing, just a gloomy old fishing village. There’ll be a palace soon, the jewel of the settlement. I’m paying for everything. I need to. After losing our realm like that, I want something that’s just… mine.”
Image

“Animals?” Jedi repeated. In the literal sense of the word or the term for rabid humans? She let out a deep sigh. “Oh, right… yeah, I suppose that would be a bad idea.” Another thing she kept forgetting. Loki wasn’t like any other Asgardian on the face of the planet. He was no Thor. He had a history with Earth and New York specifically.

“I’m sure it’ll be beautiful if you designed the palace.” She was likely going to find out about it soon anyway, things like that were bound to appear on the news. Assuming that this was the last time she was going see or speak to Loki. “I can’t imagine what it must’ve been like to lose your entire realm.” It was hard to be sympathetic right now. Sadness was over ruling everything. “Do you know when they’ll be done building?”

Loki kept staring at the ocean. He’d been fixated on it since before they got on the Wonder Wheel, but now it was making him miserable. Though, like the drama queen he was, he couldn’t stop looking.
In regard to Jedi thinking they could work it out, “It was my hope as well. No, not hope. Assumption. I keep doing that. And I’d assumed so much more besides. I asked too much of you before I gave anything of myself.”
The sight of the ocean was making him want to cry. What was he so upset about the damn ocean for? “It’s lacking comfort. I need a home right now – or as close as I can come to one. I don’t have that here.”
image
“You say that like hope is a bad thing.” Jedi commented, more offhandedly than anything else. Miserable, just purely miserable. Where he kept watching the ocean, she was staring at the city and for some reason, damn Avengers tower was drawing her eye. Hell, she was still waiting for them to bust her door down, for even talking to Loki. Looked like that after the ride was over, she wasn’t going to have to worry about that now. “Maybe you did ask too much of me. Maybe I am the one at fault here, I don’t know anymore, Loki.”

She heaved a deep sigh, turning her gaze away from the city, scooting over to look at the ocean instead. Shame they couldn’t really hear the crashing of the waves over the sound of screams of joy. That would help a lot right now. Hell, now that she thought about it, maybe a walk along the beach would help.

Image

She gave a small shake of her head. “If I had the space, I’d offer you’d stay with us.” Because even after this, she still cared. “What about your Instagram followers? Maybe one of them’s a realtor?”

“And I’m sorry I misjudged you again. But it’s better we found out now, before… On the sun’s side, it could’ve been much worse had I not begged your assent. Our ideals are far too different.“
He had a little half-hearted laugh at cursing Heimdall. He wished he could’ve gone on fucking him over just a little bit longer.  But this was cleaner. No more sneaking around.
“As you like. I fancy walking into the ocean, see what’s going on down there. I need another hemisphere around me, this one’s sorely lacking.“

‘Misjudged you, again’. That didn’t do anything for Jedi’s heartache right now. Because it made it painfully obvious that she was the problem. She was always the problem. Perhaps this was why she couldn’t have anything good in her life. She was just the main problem in everything, wasn’t she? Have ideals that were too different, not acting like expected of her.

Image

“I thought maybe we could work things out. Somehow.” a foolish hope, she realized now. And that realization left her feeling numb. Who was even rejecting who right now? She couldn’t make sense of it. That was the main issue.

“Yeah, well… this hemisphere’s got America on it, hardly surprising its lacking.” lacking in what? Well, Jedi didn’t really know. She was just responding for the sake of acknowledging she was being spoken to.

She was too lost in her own head. A city being destroyed would be an apt comparison to how her mind was going through right now.

Loki sighed, looking back at the view from Jedi’s side in the grips of adolescent self-pity.
“You asked me how I was before. I told you to wait. To ask me when we were here. I assumed my answer would so different to what it is… When the ride stops, I’m leaving the park. You have a pass, you can do more here if you like. I just feel-. I should be alone, now. Aside from Heimdall.”
He snickered at himself. “At least someone’s getting what they wanted. I hope he chokes on it.”

And there it was. The thing she thought was going to happen. The day was over, and whatever they were? Well, she doubted right now that could be salvaged any time soon. Jedi could feel her chest aching at the thought, knowing that she had been the one to fuck it up.

“I wish it was different.” she said quietly, still not looking at Loki. “I’m sorry I can't be what you want me to be, right now.” Right now. Maybe in the future, [Read: when she gets her head out of her ass], things could be different?

Image

She huffed out a soft breath. “Heimdall can go sit on a cactus.” There, she’d said it. if he was going to take pleasure out of their misery? He deserved that kind of pain. “I’m heading home after the ride. No sense in staying alone.”

Heading home and having a good cry into Arrow the plushie, sounded like a great idea.

As Jedi described the times, Loki sat back, sinking into despair. Like ya do. And he frowned through her derisive descriptions of courtship. But when she asked him why there had to be intention, he turned back to her, looking like she’s slapped in him the face.
“In all my mad, sweet fancies of what you and I would be to one another, how could I have failed to ask myself such a question?”
The rain stopped. Time started up again and Loki took his hand away from Jedi’s head. The real world. Sun shining. Children laughing. The smell of cotton candy in the air. A beautiful view.
image
And Loki sat across from her, pretty and pulled together as ever he was. Defenses up again. All the joy and life around him mocking his thwarted plans.

It was over.

Over before it had even begun. Or at least, so Jedi felt. The fact that they were even having this conversation? Yeah, that told her enough. Whatever she’d been hoping for, the hope maybe they would get past the differences between them? It was hopeless.

With Time going back to normal, she couldn’t bring herself to act like nothing had happened. It wasn’t just a sulk, it was heartache. The kind that had her fighting back tears. She stared out at the view, unable to even look at Loki right now. The urge to retreat was growing. The sound of the kids and adults having fun rising up into the air was getting annoying.

She didn’t even know what to say anymore. Which, let’s be real, was pretty uncharacteristic.

Image

The ride progressed slowly, pausing here and there to let new occupants for the ride on and off the compartments. Slowly but surely reaching the top of the wheel for the best few of the New York skyline. “I can see my house from here.” Jedi muttered. It was almost a mandatory meme at this point.
