Eleven is a Magic Number

Sophie. She/her. 29. I was made to exist in a hive mind. Good Omens, Star Trek, Doctor Who, cats, and other extraneous material.

I still can't believe how little recognition Maniac (2018) gets on here. It's tied with Russian Doll in my heart for #1 show of all time. it's thematically very similar (about mental health and dealing with your shit honestly), but conceptually very different. Instead of, "what if you died over and over until you dealt with your shit?" It's, "what if there was a pill that could make you process your trauma, but the trial for the drug is being run by wildly unethical and equally fucked up people, and a rogue computer with feelings and grief she also can't process, whose role is to make dreams for the patients that will process their trauma for them?"

It's VERY good.

And there are SO many good one-liners and jokes that me and my friends quote every day. "Annie, I'm a hawk!" "Ohh, is she the one that fucked you up?" "People were a lot smaller back then," "Wow! You are very good at gun!" And "When is this fucking horse gonna die?" Are some notable mentions

I do see the gifmakers are aware of it though. Thank you for your service 🫡

Betting I’ve reblogged this before. Betting I’ll reblog it when it turns up again.

In addition to the print terminology stuff: the visual shorthand icons and ad graphics for something about writing are still often pen-nibs, fountain pens and typewriters…

…while graphics of a monitor, keyboard and mouse remain visual shorthand for computing

…even though most writers now use monitor /  keyboard / mouse or even laptop / touchpad.

In addition, headers for “this blog / website is about writing” are often in one of the many imitation typewriter fonts complete with smudges, or just Courier.

The start and end call icons on most / all smartphones is still the handset of a classic desk telephone, and sometimes the open-app icon is a complete phone.

The term “hang up” for “end the call” refers to something even older - one of these…

And of course the Save icon is indeed a 3½ inch floppy disc.

Why it wasn’t a 5¼ floppy is a mystery. The icon version is just as distinctive.

Also, why various OP updates never changed “Save” to the graphic of a CD / DVD or flash drive is another mystery, and nowadays a Save icon should probably be a cartoon cloud.

Graphics and terminology are funny things.

reblogging this again for EVEN MORE information.

Phones still make a tuning noise when you’re waiting for someone to pick up even though phones haven’t had bells in years

We still say caught on tape when someone incriminates themselves while being recorded even though there hasn’t been a physical tape in recording devices in years.

Your jeans have rivets on the pockets even though modern sewing machines can sew through denim unlike the ones from a hundred years ago which required riveting to keep them together.

“Also, why various OP updates never changed “Save” to the graphic of a CD / DVD or flash drive is another mystery, and nowadays a Save icon should probably be a cartoon cloud.”

This one is actually pretty easy to figure out– during the time the transfer would have happened the cd/dvd icon came to mean “write to disk”. Floppy is the last real dedicated use persistent storage media. SD is not very iconic and would be confusing while usb is not a dedicated storage medium so the usb symbol would be inappropriate.

By now the diskette is recognizable and has the added bonus of having royalty-free and open use icons ready for designers to plug into their programs.

The same is true for the near-universal symbol of “saving to the cloud” which has been in use for decades– a globe, representing the “world wide web”.

Why it wasn’t a 5¼ floppy is a mystery. The icon version is just as distinctive.

That’s easy. Because the imagery associated with the 5 ¼ floppy was already in use for the universal “Power on/off” standard.

Seeing the circle and dash together would indicate closing the program, not saving the file.

I know Old West Dukat is what you secretly craved this Tuesday night.

(Best regards to Masters of the West, whose works inspired me to do THIS. Really. It was pure pleasure to paint).

It’s graded from A (great) to E (awful) and if you have the addon you have access to the info about the website on your bar

Ending the stigma of drug use will save lives.

“Never Use Alone” is a number you can call when you have no choice but to use when you’re alone.

If you call (800) 484-3731, an operator will answer your call, and ask for your first name, location and whether you have any allergies, or medical conditions. After you’ve given us this information you can go ahead and inject your substance. After you’ve ingested the substance, we will continue communicating with you. If you do not respond after 30-45 seconds, we will notify emergency services of a possible overdose at the location you’ve given us.

We will never shame you, judge you, or preach at you to quit. If you are ready to quit though, we have treatment resources for every state in the US. Regardless if you have insurance, or not. We will do our best to connect you with the help you need. please call. We are on standby.

Never Use Alone doesn’t have an app (yet) but there are two apps that can be used all over the world. One that is available only on iOS last time I checked is The Canary Overdose prevention app and the other is Be Safe by The Brave Coop. They are both very easy to use.

from this reddit thread that has a lot of people talking about the hotline, including sharing their own experiences. additionally, it looks like there are also similar overdose prevention hotlines in other countries now, such as canada and scotland

For those in the notes wondering about their cop policy, here’s what they say on their website’s FAQ:

All operators are harm reductionists. Our goal is to reduce harm, not increase it, by getting you arrested. Our hope is that only EMS responds, but the truth is, we cannot guarantee that. To reduce the chances of the police showing up with EMS, when we call EMS, we report it as an “unresponsive person”, rather than an “overdose”. When you call 911 and report an “overdose”, a lot of times, police will automatically respond to those calls. So, by reporting it as an “unresponsive person” it reduces the chances of police responding.

They also say that all of their volunteers have personally experience with substance use, and that they do not accept volunteers employed by addiction treatment centers.
