You know what, I'm not usually the kind to reblog with commentary, but I really want to tell you all the story of the most awkward, surreal meal of my entire life.

So a few years ago, I was going on a road trip with my parents and their dog, Loki. My parents were teachers at my middle/high school and are still on fairly good terms with some of their former students, so when we went through a major city in the PNW, we decided to stop and have dinner with one of them.

Let's call him X.

Now... X was not in my grade, but it was a very small school. So I'd say that I knew him a little, but not nearly as well as my parents did. I was just along for the ride, though, and it was fine. I'd get food.

We show up to his place and he lets us leave my parents' dog in his living room, and my parents set up the travel crate that we'd been hauling around with us for this purpose. X asks a lot of questions about the crate, but we just kind of assumed that he was considering getting a dog, so we don't think anything of it.

You might already be seeing where this is going, but I certainly didn't.

We end up going to a pretty fancy place for dinner. My parents are doing better now and they wanted to treat him. It's one of those really chic, loud restaurants, though, and no one in my family can hear very well. That said, I'm seated across from X, so I'm doing all right.

All's going well, conversation is going smoothly, until X takes a deep breath and starts talking about puppy play.

I stop eating.

He starts telling us about this really cool community that he's been into lately, and it's become really important to him. And it's -- no, its not a sex thing, it's totally not a sex thing, he just really likes to be leashed and treated like a dog.

I think it's probably actually less weird if it's a sex thing, but I don't say that. I just nod my head. I look at my parents.

Personally, I think that people should do whatever makes them happy, even if I feel that puppy play is a lot to drop on a person you barely know after a decade of not seeing them, all while in a very fancy restaurant. My parents, though, are... well, they're not nearly as conservative as they used to be, but they still get shocked relatively easily.

They are just placidly eating their food, though, nodding occasionally, and I realize with mounting horror that they cannot hear him. I am the only person at this entire table who is hearing X pour his heart out about buying ears and a tail.

He tells us that his "roommate" isn't actually his roommate. It's his master. "Oh," my mother says. "That's nice."

I am just. eating my food.

X gets a little teary at this point. Tells us how much it means to him that we're all so accepting, especially my parents. He tells them that they were his favorite teachers growing up, so their approval means a lot.

They nod vaguely in return and I am dying inside.

We finally finish and go back to his place. Pick up our dog, say good night to X. He's deliriously happy and I figure, y'know, all's well that ends well.

We get in the car and sit there in silence for a moment, and then I say, cautiously, "You guys took the puppy play thing pretty well."

"THAT'S WHAT HE WAS SAYING?" my poor partially deaf mother yelled.

"WHAT'S PUPPY PLAY?" my dad asks, just wanting to be included.

I begin the very painful process of telling my (at the time) 55yo father what puppy play is and he's quiet for a minute, digesting this. Then he asks, "Is that why he kept asking all those questions about the dog crate? I sent him a link so he could buy one right before we left."

And uh anyway that's the story of the most awkward night of my life.

Y'know, as a co-founder of the Pup Play scene we enjoy today, I often wonder whether it might have been better just to keep it to myself

Americans, these are things we are NOT saying in 2024:

"Voting blue won't solve anything." Yes it will: if enough of us do it, it will solve a problem called Trump's second term in the White House. We unfortunately live in a two-party system. If you refuse to vote, you're effectively voting for Trump. I shouldn't need to explain this to people, yet here we are.

"It doesn't matter who's president. Both candidates are the same anyway." No, they are REALLY not. Biden was never my first choice, and his shipments of arms to Israel are despicable, but don't try to tell me even for a second that a second Trump term would be the same for the world as a second Biden term.

"But voting blue won't fix [fundamental underlying problem in America]." Voting for Democrats cannot fix every issue, this is true. But by saying this and ONLY this you are discouraging people from voting by making them feel hopeless. Voting is one of many tools in our arsenal, not the only tool, but an important one, and it does matter.

"You shouldn't vote blue, you should do [other thing] instead." See above: you can vote and protest and organize at the same time. It's not either/or. You can do it all. Stop discouraging voters from exercising their rights under the guise of leftism.

"Voting is just legitimizing government power. It makes you part of the system." Literally just shut up. Women and people of color didn't fight for their voting rights to have you say things like this. If you live in America and you can legally vote, then you should fucking vote, and vote blue. There is no neutral option.

"Voting blue just makes you complicit in [this bad policy]." Inaction, and allowing Trump to have a second term, is worse for the entire world than any Democrat policy. Yes, even that one. Voting is not about finding a perfect unproblematic candidate. It is about choosing the lesser of two evils.

"Voting doesn't work because—" STOP IT. STOP DISCOURAGING PEOPLE FROM VOTING.

You know who wants you NOT to vote? Trump supporters, that's who. You should be suspicious of ANYONE who is suggesting that your vote doesn't matter, or that both candidates are the same, or that Biden's policy on XYZ means you shouldn't vote for him. Trump supporters aren't trying to get your vote by saying, "Vote for Trump!" They're trying to get your vote by DISCOURAGING YOU FROM VOTING AT ALL.

I don't like Biden either, but Trump is unequivocally worse. Voting doesn't fix everything, but it is the minimum fucking requirement of living in a democracy. Voting for president has real, tangible, immediate impacts on people's lives, and choosing not to vote is not the rebellion you think it is, it is just relinquishing your voice. So fucking vote. THIS IS A GROUP PROJECT AND DAMN IT WE ARE NOT FAILING BECAUSE OF YOU.

Reblogging this again in honor of the dipshit in my notes crying and screaming about things I did not say. “Why do you like Biden why are you saying he’s good” I don’t. Says it right there in the post. “But voting won’t fix everything” I know. Says it right there in the post. “Voting is the bare minimum” Amazing! Says that in the post too. “Why aren’t you telling people to do things beside vote” I literally did. Read the fucking post.

If you don't like Biden's support for Israel, you should know that it is nothing compared to Trump's support for Israel, and the Republican Party in general. And they are using American influence in entirely different ways.

Biden: "Israel is our ally, and we support our allies. However, let's talk behind the scenes and use our material support to put pressure on them to stop their part of the violence and come to a viable peace agreement."

Trump: "Fuck yeah, genocide is awesome! Let's kill all the brown people! Let's kill all the Muslims! I'm going to give you everything you could ever want with no strings!" Trump is supported by Evangelical and Fundamentalist Christians, who believe in the Rapture, which is a completely whacked interpretation of Revelation in which, for Jesus to come back, Israel has to be destroyed and all Jews killed, except that God will kill all the people who destroy Israel. Therefore, Rapture believers want someone else (preferably Muslims) to destroy Israel and commit genocide against Jews, so that both Jews and Muslims will be wiped out.

Those are your two choices.

On the one hand, a guy who stands by Israel politically and militarily but is also advocating for justice and peace behind the scenes, or a guy who is 100% ride-or-die for the worst of Netanyahu's violence and backed by people who are hoping to use this to create more genocide in the future.

And if you say "well, I just won't vote," you are contributing to the victory of the guy who is vocally pro-genocide.

I recently saw a post trying to discourage votes for Biden by revealing things that have happened under Biden. However I've noticed people doing that never seem to want to discuss the problem or policy under Republicans.

The post revealed the large number of immigrants deported under Biden. What the poster was careful not to point out is that Republicans consider only deporting several hundred thousand people to be an "Open Door" policy they need to fix by sending everyone back and slamming the door shut.

Biden hasn't fixed abortion rights. Oh, you mean those rights Trump succeeded in destroying by stacking the Supreme Court with conservative judges who lied about not revoking Rowe vs Wade. Do you think conservatives are happy with States being able to decide to protect abortion? Do you think they aren't working to change that?

Israel. See the post above on the rapture. Understand how deeply help that belief is. I had an elderly neighbor who used to donate $25 a week to her church so they would have enough money to send Jewish people back to Israel for the end times.

Look, if the Republicans take the House, Senate and Presidency, you will learn far too quickly and sadly how badly you've been decieived.

You are voting for every Democrat on that ballot purely as a matter of survival.

So, apparently this bill won't take effect until 90 days after the legislative session ends (I am not a lawyer, but I think this is common practice for laws), so the repeal won't be immediate. Fortunately, Arizona also has a Democratic attorney general who has said she will not prosecute doctors who perform abortions in violation of this law.

Arizona Attorney Geneeral Kris Mayes won her election by 280 votes out of ~2.5 million.

Every single vote counts. Every single vote matters.
