Imagine Ed sitting down with Al and explaining to him how their father died.
Ed had always been hostile towards Hohenheim his entire life, never forgiving him for leaving. He never even called him ‘dad’ (lovingly) and only started to warm up to him at the end of the series. In CoS when Noah asks Ed where his father is he mentions him in a caring, emotional way.
Al on the other hand was always ready to stand by his dad and remained optimistic about his return. He even tried to get Ed to see it his way though it never happened. The last time Al saw Hohenheim was back at their house in Resembool before he left to face Dante.
Hohenheim got to see Ed older but not Al.
Imagine Ed telling Al about their father’s sacrifice, his attempt to open the Gate and get Ed back home. Imagine Ed telling his brother that their father’s last words were directed at him even though Ed got to spend more time with him in the end.
Imagine Ed watching his brother start to cry after learning their dad is dead and Ed just tearing apart inside as he remembers the blood being spilled, his expression hopeless.
Just imagine.
