Trying to decide whether or not to table at events sucks so much now. Because I actually love tabling? Especially at zine fests, I always have a good time. But everything is, at best, "masks suggested" now, so on top of rolling the dice on if I'll even be well enough to go, I'm rolling the dice over getting the thing that disabled me.
It was funny talking to my brother about Etsy recently because he said "oh, Etsy is just drop shippers now" and I was like "right... because not everyone is searching for witchcraft zines and handmade binding poppets when they go to Etsy"
Guess who remembered to update their etsy shop with zines they made more than six months ago?
So I collect witch arts and crafts for the Museum of Contemporary Witchcraft, mostly by perusing Etsy and the like. My first collection is poppets, and I've found a wide variety, and now I've started looking at mini altars and travel shrines, since that's another strong intersection between art and witchcraft. And there are plenty of altars to all the current favorite gods and spirits, but the thing is, I haven't found a single travel altar to Hermes. And I just think that's funny, cause, you know, Hermes. I've found one for the planet Mercury, but none for, you know, this god of travel.
Come to think of it, it was also challenging to find a mini Hermes for my car dashboard. I found one eventually, but I had to order it from Greece.
Cardiology tests all came back good. My long covid symptoms are not caused by any sort of heart issue, which is good, if bittersweet news. I really was hoping for an easily treatable tachycardia so I could just take a pill and get back to normal. As it is, I don't need to worry about my heart for a couple of decades at least, but every time possible causes get eliminated I think maybe this is just all in my head and I can stop pacing, go back to pre-2020 energy expenditure and everything will be fine. That course of action hasn't worked so far, but this time, maybe this time it will.
going to a dentist knowing there are no more covid precautions and I'll be exposed to the thing that disabled me is way more stressful than any of the fillings I had to get as a kid
I know I've said it before but it's so hard to be the most feared witch in this village. There are so many witches here and some of them are definitely scarier than I am
look I don’t want to tell anyone what to do but if you go down that path you will wake up a thousand years later and all your great-grandchildren will be dead
But I get a thousand year nap out of it?
That’s not the intended use Sir
But I get a thousand year nap out of it???
One person’s bug is another person’s feature.
I made a potion to cure my springtime sadness. It's mostly sugar water but there's some ginger and rhubarb and gold sparkles in there too
hey did you know that uhh

oh shit i didn't expect this to actually get notes lmao
these are all direct quotes from jeffrey jerome cohen's "monster culture (seven theses)" (full pdf linked) i highly encourage you to read it yourself!
that said, while i think cohen's writing is evocative, it can be a little dense, so while i'm here, here's my capsule summary (you can also hear me talk about this in the first episode of my podcast) (listen to @ghostswerepeopletoo)
- i. the monster's body is a cultural body - The monster is a work of fiction to be analyzed through tools of literary and sociological theory.
- ii. the monster always escapes - As long as the cultural fear from which the monster stems persists, the monster will reappear in retellings, reimaginings, and sequels.
- iii. the monster is the harbinger of category crisis - Monsters defy binaries and challenge easy comprehension or categorization.
- iv. the monster dwells at the gates of difference - The monster represents the Other.
- v. the monster polices the borders of the possible - Tales of the monster exist to discourage unacceptable or taboo behaviors.
- vi. fear of the monster is really a kind of desire - Subjects can vicariously participate in the disruption of the social order through the monster.
- vii. the monster stands at the threshold… of becoming - Within the monster we find information about the self.
Reposting this because I need to materialize it somewhere.
Truly the all time funniest writer thing is when you're doing edits and you think to yourself "omg I've got the PERFeCT sentence to add right here!" and then you stick it in all excited, only to find that literally three lines down you have virtually that exact same sentence in the draft already.
A fun witch exercise I like to do is to look at different items and figure out how they could be used in a working.
I'm almost tempted to make a Chopped-like game where I give a witch a basket of random shit and see what they come up with.
I'm not familiar with the Chopped thing but this is a super fun discord game to play!
The "we should make a chopped version but for <insert here witchy thing>" times is upon us again xD
Chopped is a tv show were contestants do not know what they will be cooking with. Each contestant is given a basket of ingredients, and then they are expected to make a plate with those ingredients (all of them). Then they are judged for their creativity, tastiness, beauty, and also potentially how wild they were during the session. Then they get eliminated over time based on the ... subjective criteria.
As I have said before, in the chopped spell version - I would drop that black pepper on yall with the quickness.
Ah ya, we mentioned this idea years ago!
I actually implemented it as a virtual game show at CrtiWitchCon 2022 and it was so much fun to give witches items they will find in their space, a magical goal, an amount of time, and some time to explain it!
i think this came about on tumblr originally where were discussing what would appear on a witchcraft TV channel. My favorite idea was to give people a magical goal and $20 to spend at a thrift shop and see what they come up with.
when i was 20 i hadn't transitioned yet but i had a dream where i died and saw my own spirit leave my body and my spirit had the form of a silhouette of a young girl in a sundress and even without any context i felt inherently that that was "me" and then i woke up. a very cisgender experience
This reminds me of the dream I had where I introduced myself to an old woman and said “hello my name is *deadname*” and she said, “no it’s not, your name is Tom.”
Then I sent it to @one-time-i-dreamt and everyone commented “egg”
Shawn and Gus are drift compatible but under no circumstances should they ever be allowed to pilot a jaeger
Forget emotional regulation I want out.
