when two musicians sing into the same microphone and lean in very close to each other… like omg are you guys gonna kiss now to relieve the homoerotic tension?😳

THIS IS NOT ABOUT ONE DIRECTION I DON’T KNOW WHO THIS “HARRY” PERSON IS GO WATCH BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND CLARENCE CLEMONS KISS ON STAGE RIGHT NOW

op is the only valid person i’ve ever met. everyone else needs to come to the light

Okay, but this is really important: Bruce Springsteen occupied this really weird place in music history. His songs were all from this pessimistic, nihilistic view of an America that had let him down:

Just like the anti-Vietnam War protest songs that we associate with the 1960s, or the early nihilism that spawned punk music in the 1970s. But he didn’t *sound* like a punk anarchist; he sounded like a country rock singer. When he released Born in the U.S.A. people completely misinterpreted (or possibly ignored) the lyrics in favor of the tone of the music.

Politicians used his music to promote their ‘Murica Yes! brand, and he had to literally explain that that was not what he was about. He’s over here asking when we’re going to have jobs and heathcare, not stanning the politicians who weren’t helping the people.

It was also kind of a big deal that he had an integrated band, because even as late as the 1980s music was still kind of segregated and MTV was straight up racist. They refused to play and promote black artists and then claimed that were no black artists in the first place. Michael Jackson’s record company had to threaten a boycott of their white artists to get MTV to play his Thriller video.

Plus, the first black/white interracial kiss on TV was in 1968 (OG Star Trek). Also it took us until the 70s to get sympathetic gay characters on screen, and the 90s to get gay characters to kiss onscreen. And all of those firsts were met with outrage.

So keep that in mind when you see Bruce Springsteen not just playing with an interracial band, but engaging in an interracial, gay kiss on stage repeatedly.

I used to think that Bruce and Clarence kissing onstage was exuberance, showmanship, and telling racist homophobes to fuck off. Like, they picked up a certain kind of audience and went “Racist homophobes? Not in our house!” And started the kissing then but then I actually looked it up and

It was a story where… we remade the city. We remade the city, shaping it into the kind of place where our friendship and our love for one another wouldn’t have been such an exceptional thing. - Bruce Springsteen

It wasn’t about showmanship or rejecting bigots or anything it was just. Damn right that was one of the loves of his life and damn right he was going to kiss him onstage

It gets me a little that Bruce has had a divorce, that he’s been married twice, but he loved Clarence for the rest of Clarence’s life and will presumably love him the rest of his own

Clemons said in one interview. “Bruce and I looked at each other and didn’t say anything, we just knew. We knew we were the missing links in each other’s lives. He was what I’d been searching for.” In another version of the story, Clemons says “He looked at me, and I looked at him, and we fell in love.”

I’m having some emotions about it!

“He was elemental in my life,“ Springsteen adds, “and losing him was like losing the rain.”

Not just! I love you pure and deep and true but! I am going to love you like that in front of the whole damn world!

We have fewer narratives about taking risks and making statements for platonic love rather than romantic and supposedly it would be easier to downplay this onstage than romance and! They refused! They fucking refused! In front of hundreds of thousands of people, over the course of years! In the spotlight, in word and deed, I love you!

God I’m not okay about it

dad's dead because of me. mom's dead. i should have just stayed dead. / look, i don't need to feel like hell for failing you, okay? for failing you like i've failed every other godforsaken thing i've cared about! / castiel, he's dead. all the way dead, because of you. / i always tried to protect you. keep you safe. dad didn't even have to tell me, it was just always my responsibility. i had one job. and i screwed it up. and for that i'm sorry. i guess that's what i do: i let down the people i love.

guys you think the jocks would have welcomed dean into their circle?? have you MET a highscool football boy?

as if they wouldn’t have sensed the lack of a stable home life and the deep rooted insecurity masked by the constant need to perform a mile off.

high school football jocks almost as mean girls as the cliques of the popular senior girls. different groups same pretzels. the guy in the thrifted clothes with no mom and who’s dad is always gone, living in a motel where money runs so tight he can barely feed both his brother and himself. who treats flirting with girls like he’s got something to prove and the whole school is his audience. who swims in a too big leather jacket that just makes him look smaller, rarely takes it off. always wears a necklace everyday and usually has on more jewelry, which none of the other guys do. who’s already been through trauma and carries it in his shoulders, both acts immature as to be expected for his age and sometimes far too serious, old beyond his years in a way that’s just weird, as if he’s seen something you haven’t. who can’t go out and party because he’s always taking care of his baby brother and learned his lesson about what happens if he’s not looking after Sam, who’s essentially become his number one priority as if he were a teen dad. who’s athletic but doesn’t know the rules of games, doesn’t really show an interest in sports like the other boys - who instead can vault over fences and throw knives and who’s body is coiled as if he’s ready for a fight - a real one, not just a scrap in the parking lot. who’s struggling in his studies because of all the time he has to dedicate to studying and taking on parentification roles and make money somehow, let alone taking on any extracurriculars or real hobbies of any kind. you’re telling me that kid would be a jock.

the drifter kid and his baby brother who are in town for a few weeks. who doesn’t really seem to fit in, to get it, the way all the other teens do. who’s interests are dated by like 15 years and talks in constant references and quotes. who’s little brother is a will byers type without the group of loyal friends, who also is on the outskirts and struggles to make friends and has frequent visits with counselors. who dean is very protective of and will step in to defend against any bullies. the winchesters. where something about them just seems off. like they don’t fit. like they don’t belong here. as if the very space around them becomes liminal.

you’re trying to tell me that kid would be a jock. that the jocks would have invited him into their circle.

okay but looking at how dean acts in s4 compared to s1-3 it’s SO clear it’s abt what happened in hell. he was tortured for 20 years and when he gave in and became the torturer to protect himself that meant the next 20 years he was in the process of becoming a demon. and when he gets back and he finds out sam is drinking demon blood and using his powers and training under a demon dean is terrified that the same thing is happening to sam. “at least he died human” is literally what dean wishes he could have done, he’s so ashamed of what he did and traumatized by it and he wishes he hadn’t, wishes he’d stayed himself instead of letting hell change him. and what sam is doing looks so familiar to him, he’s desperate to stop him, desperate to pull him out before it’s too late for him like it is for dean.

and actually! this makes the mark of cain arc so much more intense and if they had actually leaned into the fact that they’re talking about THEE biblical cain who was a brother THEE biblical abel and that cain commits the first murder by killing his brothers, especially since they changed THEE bible so that cain killed abel to save him from lucifer, from hell, and gave himself in his place, they could have done so much work with dean and sam’s relationship and deconstructed the dynamic they’ve been building up since s3. the older brother gives himself in exchange for the younger, the older brother tries to protect the younger from lucifer, the older brother ensures that his brother “dies human” and becomes a demon in his place. what was that like for abel? to know he is in heaven because his brother took his place in hell? to know his brother killed him for this? is it enough? is it worth the betrayal? is he ashamed of himself? is he angry? why didn’t they fucking cast abel????
