It was quite late, the sun had set long ago and the cold wind was noticeable outside. James was staying late, hit upon a messy section in the books or something similar. Toni brought him a bowl of dinner’s stew as the young man had refused any when it was actually dinner time.

He set it down on the desk. “It’s too cold out to walk back into town. I’ll fix up a spare room for you.”

He looked up from the books at the sound of the bowl set upon the table and Toni’s voice, knocked out of his focus. “Hmm? Oh, you don’t ‘ave to do that. I can walk back yet. I’m ‘most done here.”

Avatar

After a moment he pulled away. “I think that might be enough strength. Might need a bit mo’ later, though.”

“One more for the road?” He leaned back in.

He hummed and nodded. “One more.” He quickly kissed him once again.

He stroked his thumb over his cheek.

He pulled away after a moment. “Thanks, kind sir.”

“Anytime.” He smiled. “Just ask.”

He pressed a kiss to his cheek before clambering up off of Toni’s lap so they could both stand.

He stretched his legs, as they’d gone slightly numb from James sitting in his lap.

“What can I help with?” He asked, reaching a hand out for Toni’s.

He let him take it. “You could start heating the water for your bath?”

“Sure.” He nodded, smiling fondly, giving Toni’s hand a parting squeeze.

He headed to the kitchen, heating up their lunch’s leftovers as their dinner.

He began the slow (and often annoying) process of heating the bath water, humming a working song as he did.

Their dinner heated up faster than the water, so Toni carried their plates to the washroom to leave less of a time gap between eating and getting clean.

James was still humming as Toni walked in, pouring the second round of warming water into the tub.

He stood in the doorway to watch, but mostly listen to, him work.

He didn’t notice Toni in the doorway at first, guard down and fully comfortable in their home, singing quietly.

It was only when he sat down next to the fireplace to wait for the next round to heat fully that he noticed his lover, nearly jumping out of his skin as he did. “Woah, you gave me a spook there.”

He stiffened a bit as James said that. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. I was just tryin’ to listen to you sing.” He handed him his plate.

“‘s alright.” He smiled fondly, nodding his thanks as he took the plate. “Just wasn’t expecting you to be there so quick, you can be mighty quiet when you don’ have your spurs on.”

“‘nd just so y’know, I’ll sing to you anytime.” He said after a moment.

He sat down next to him. “You do have a lovely singing voice.”

He ducked his head bashfully. “I suppose I’ll let you stay the judge of that. It’s a good way to pass the time when doing housework, I find. ‘nd my parents dogs always liked it.”

He rested his knee against his. “I’ll look forward to hearin’ you sing in the future.”

“As much as you’d like.” He agreed before taking a bite of his food to stop himself from rambling.

He smiled and joined him in eating.

James had nearly finished his food at about the same time that the last pot finished heating. He set his plate with just a bit of leftovers on it down and calmbered up to make sure he got the pot before the water began to boil.

Toni moved out of the way for him.

He poured in the water, hair frizzing a bit in the rising steam. “Alright, all ready!”

“We should probably redo the arnica after the bath.” he said as he finished up his plate. “You get in while I go grab that.”

He nodded and said a soft, “Thank you,” before he began to undress.

He looked up from the books at the sound of the bowl set upon the table and Toni’s voice, knocked out of his focus. “Hmm? Oh, you don’t ‘ave to do that. I can walk back yet. I’m ‘most done here.”

“I’d rather not talk too much about it, Miss Luna.” He responded.

She nodded. “Fair ‘nuff. But if you do ever need a place to keep your secrets away from your heart, you know where to find me.”

“Thank you.” He nodded once. “I ‘preciate that.”

Toni came back with the open can and three clean forks. “You two gettin’ along?”

He smiled, “Sure are.”

He set the can down in between the three of them and sat down. “Glad to hear that.”

He smiled back as Toni sat down. “I appreciate you both for your help.”

Luna took one of the dessert forks and fished a piece of peach out of the can, prompting Toni to pass the other fork to James.

James took the fork and followed suit, taking a moment to enjoy the silence and the sweet fruit.

Toni offered his slice to him.

He grinned and took the offered bite from Toni’s fork. “Why thank you.”

They made quick work of the can, quiet in their relishing of the sweet treat.

It wasn’t long before Luna stood from the table, James busy collecting their forks and can.

“I suppose I’d better head back to the house before the day runs too far away from me.” She said.

Toni gently, platonically, kissed her forehead. “Stay safe gettin’ back.”

“Farewell Miss Luna!” James called.

“Goodbye to ‘ya both. I’ll see you soon enough.” She replied, leaning on the doorframe as she spoke, before continuing on to outside.

He watched her go for a bit before closing the door behind her.

“It was good to see her.” James commented quietly. “Even though it’s weird to have her nosiness turned on me.”

“It’ll wind down soon now that she knows how much you’re willing to offer up.” He shook his head with a smile. “But she’s been like that since forever.”

He nodded his understanding. “I appreciate her though, and her protectiveness of you.”

“We’re like siblings to each other.”

“It’s heartwarming.” He said. “Reminds me of my older brother back home.”

“You have siblings?” he asked.

“Two.” He nodded. “An older and a younger brother. Wyatt is the older and the younger is Nash, but we call him Sprout most’ the time.”

“I would love to hear some stories about them.”

“Someday.” He agreed with a nod. “What’s on the schedule for the rest of the day?”

“Rest.” he said. “We might not truly believe in The Lord, but it’s good to take a break.”

He nodded with a bit of reluctance. “Breaks are…odd to me. I always get frustrated that I’m not gettin’ anything done.”

“You’ll notice how much more you can get done tomorrow when you’re not exhausted.”

“Alright.” He took a settling breath. “Deal.”

He reached out and rubbed his arm.

He hummed softly, not quite content in his inaction, but getting there.

He pulled him into a hug.

He hugged him back, nestling his face into his shoulder and mumbling a quiet “thank you.”

He planted a kiss in his hair.

He smiled, pressing a kiss where his lips met Toni’s collarbone.

“We can sit and read together for the rest of the afternoon.” he suggested.

“That sounds perfect.” He agreed.

He smiled and quickly scooped James up in his arms.

He gave a soft sound of surprise but made no complaints, happy to be lifted.

He carried him to their library, sitting down in one of the armchairs with him on his lap now.

“What shall we read?” He asked once they settled.

“I don’t know. It’s been ages since I took time for leisurely reading.”

“How about something spooky?” He suggested.

He reached over and grabbed a book off a nearby shelf. “I don’t know how many spooks this one’s got, but Luna said it was good and she loves scary stories.”

He nodded. “I trust Luna’s judgement. Lord knows this will probably be the best book you’ve ever read, knowing her.”

He opened the book, flipping through to the first page. “Maybe you two could start a book club together.”

“That would be lovely!” He nodded. “I’ll have to speak to her about it sometime soon. Any requests for us to have on the list?”

“She mentioned a whole bunch of German books that recently got translated that she wants to read.”

He nodded, putting that on the list in his head titled: “Things to Speak with Miss Luna About”.

He settled further into the chair, clearing his throat before he began to read.

He settled his head onto Toni’s shoulder, scanning the words he could see, and visualizing as his voice washed over him.

His thumb idly traced circles onto James’ side as he read, only occasionally stumbling on unfamiliar words.

He spoke up only a few times to ask what a word meant, or to request Toni to reread a sentence that didn’t quite make sense.

He gladly complied with the requests.

“There’s a lotta fancy writing in here.” He commented.

He hummed in agreement. “I think Luna mentioned that Mary Shelley’s husband was a poet.”

“Ah yeah, I suppose that’ll rub off after a while.” He said. “Sorry, keep going, didn’t mean to stop ya.”

“‘S alright.” He kissed his forehead. “Helps me understand what’s going on too.”

He hummed contently, glad his interruption hadn’t been a bother.

He continued reading, getting to about the one third mark before stopping. “I think it’s almost dinner time.”

“Alright,” he agreed a bit wistfully. “‘spose I aught to get up and help get set up.”

“I ‘spose.” Toni agreed with a kiss to James’ cheek.

“I may need a kiss for a bit of strength so that I can manage to get up.” He contemplated.

“I might be amenable to help you with that.” he lightly joked, quickly pecking his lips.

He laughed softly. “I’m afraid that’s not quite enough strength.”

“Hmmm.” He kissed him again. “Better?”

He pretended to try to get up and fail. “One more I think.”

He cupped his cheek and pulled him into a kiss.

He grinned victoriously into the kiss, leaning in as he was pulled.
