One Word: Family

Hi! Finn's the name, DnD is (potentially) the game. I'm a recent critter and needed to make a blog to support them!

Some Folks: Man, Liam is so emo and annoying.
Fandom: ...his mother passed away around the time his character hit his lowest emotional point in this character arc.
Some Folks: Man, Liam doesn't take the game seriously enough.
Fandom: ...he's been in tears in-game, spends an absurd amount of time singlehandedly collecting and compiling the fanart showcases every single week, has repeatedly talked about how this is one of the most important things in his life, that the players are a second family, and that "it's a game" is in direct response to the people who nitpick every decision and dice roll.
Some Folks: Man, Vax is so whiny and ungrateful to be chosen as the champion of the Raven Queen.
Fandom: ...he was already moving toward being a paladin of the goddess of redemption and second chances, and his sister's life was the bargaining chip to ensure his cooperation.
Some Folks: Man, why doesn't Vax get that the Raven Queen is neutrally aligned and not evil? He's only freaking out to be annoying!
Fandom: ...she's technically unaligned, he literally has to drown himself to talk with her, his sister died because she went near the RQ's former champion's armor, and Matt made a point of describing her in the most unnerving terms possible.
Vax: Talks to his sister about how it breaks his heart that she's still trapped in self-loathing and that he hopes she'll find a way out someday soon.
Some Folks: He's so annoyed at her and just wants her to be perfect!
Vax: Tells his sister she's a grown-ass woman but that he's worried about her.
Some Folks: He's so condescending and doesn't trust her to make her own decisions!
Liam and Laura: Repeatedly make emotional posts on twitter about how their sibling relationship in-game has translated into a quasi-sibling relationship in real life.
Some Folks: Laura's clearly doesn't enjoy the sibling scenes at all!
Matt: Nobody metagamed last episode, what are you talking about?
Some Folks: Liam definitely metagamed last episode.
Fandom: ...hey so everyone fucks up but maybe it's a little excessive to write entirely skewed and hyper-focused breakdowns of Liam and Vax's every action, including making video compilations if he should happen to flub a game mechanic in a show in which the rules are frequently and cheerfully bent, and insinuating that his closest friends hate him after a decision he made in a game of D&D.
Some Folks: Man, I didn't know I wasn't allowed to dislike a character, that's so hypocritical, it's just really important that everybody knows how much I dislike this character, and it's even more important that the people who enjoy this character know how much I dislike him. It's just really really really important that they know--
Fandom: ...isn't it kind of weird that the female character in an absurdly popular and newly canon m/f pairing has her closest non-romantic relationship scrutinized endlessly and all of a sudden the fic about her skews way more dramatically toward stories in which she plays a secondary role to the problems of her romantic interest, while the male character's non-romantic relationships are still prioritized and explored frequently in fic?
Some Folks: Man, yeah, what a strange coincidence.
Me: I mean, Some Folks is obviously a strawman based loosely on real posts here, but the last time I wrote a post like this, I lost count around the *thirtieth* (that's three-zero) message/ask from people, many of whom had been watching the show since near the time it started, who were seriously considering leaving tumblr fandom because of the weirdly aggressive nitpicking of Liam's and Vax's every move.
Me: This is such a strange hill to die on when it's so much easier to go "oh shit, maybe everything this character does is The Worst because I don't like them and that's coloring my impressions, so spending all my time trying to tell people how much they should hate them is not gonna work out so great for me." It's just as easy to come up with positive explanations for character actions and motivations as it is to come up with ways to lambast them---that's exactly what I did up there.
Me: It's not quashing criticism to say that constantly posting about characters/ships you dislike (when said characters/ships aren't, like, inherently abusive or bigoted or some other brand of terrible) is sort of a weird hobby meant exclusively to make other folks in fandom feel like shit.
Me: I get that this kind of repetition is usually a frustration born of feeling like you're not being heard, but come on, give other fans a little credit for critical thinking; they might be coming at this from a different angle than you, and that's okay. Sometimes you just plain dislike a character for no reason other than they rub you the wrong way, but it's also important to keep in mind that external biases can come into play with something like that.
Me: In any case, it's really, really important to do a little self-reflection from time to time to make sure you're not causing more harm than good, here.

shit y’all Wise Man’s Tree is just so good the pacing is so steady and the imagery is the sort of thing I want to go out and film and the characters are so quick and clever and the riddles are something you can solve along with Vex and I’m just constantly in awe

hey important question what Arts would VM practice?

like, Tibs would do film and Kiki’s a dancer, Vax does theatre, Scanlan’s a musician. feel like Percy would do sculpture. someone probably paints? maybe Pike? and like what about Vex help a girl out here

edit: FUCK I FORGOT GROG I’M A SHAM™

oooh I love the suggestion that vex draws with charcoal and other smudgy mediums I just really like the image of her with charcoal on her hands (and getting other people messy tbt the Warpaint Incident)

grog, obviously, does visual arts. something with thick, heavy paints, kinda messy. big canvases. really good with color theory

also I really like the thought of Pike doing pottery? something delicate, forged in fire, lovely and also useful, trades tips sometimes with Percy on using clay, makes little figurines and totems with the extra material for her friends to keep them safe

The actress who rose to fame in the Star Wars franchise also became an advocate for mental health treatment.

She was also a talented film doctor, who quietly worked on hundreds of scripts, ironing out wrinkled and bringing magi to the screen. Thank you for all your work, Carrie. You will be greatly missed.

She was so much more than Star Wars and all that she did was phenomenal 😭💔
