Thinking about how the doctor is a touch telepath and always wears layered outfits that cover them down to the wrist and ankles. Shirts with collars buttoned all the way up. Anywhere between two and four layers on any given day. The idea of being so scared of emotions and vulnerability that you isolate and hide yourself away to protect yourself from the possibility or the chance of feeling something even on accident. If you wear a jacket you won't brush up against that girl handing you your coffee and know that she's worried about a sick pet. You wont trip and find out that your friends have been worrying about you more lately- that you scared them a little that one time, that they're still thinking about it. You wont be shoved to the floor and find out that man you killed is still dying, and that he's afraid. You wont feel anything you don't choose to. Feelings can't reach you if you don't let them. If you bury yourself in layers of fabric nothing can touch you. I'm rambling I forget what I was talking about.

YES FINALLY SOMEBODY FUCKING GETS IT

I really think we owe a lot of that shift to the choice to cast Tim Downie. You can tell there are certain lines that were meant to be very Casanova-esque, but Tim puts a different spin on it that adds a TON of vulnerability.

It's actually why I think the game is so mean to Gale and why the head writer said that Gale sacrificing himself was the best ending—conceptually, Gail was supposed to be this pompous egotistical wizard who fell because he literally believed that he knew better than the gods themselves. A character like that choosing to sacrifice themselves for the greater good is actually a pretty narratively satisfying ending. Unfortunately that's not who Gale became.

Instead of an egotistical know-it-all who thinks he's better than the gods, Gale comes across as a vulnerable, passionate, charismatic man who only wanted to feel like he was good enough. He went after the orb, not because he thought he knew better, but because he wanted to convince his lover to make him hurt equal. He comes across as downtrodden, and sympathetic, and discouraged. He's deeply, deeply passionate about his magic, but also believes that that's the only thing he has going for him, that he's worthless without it. Tim Downie's incredible voice acting skills did that. Tim Downie brought the vulnerability. He completely changed the character, totally for the better, but I think it left a disconnect between the character The writers thought they were creating, and the character the players actually received.

There are a few lines in EA and even in the full release game that (if read in straight) are so cassanova, charming, flirty.

The way Tim Downie adds such sensitivity and depth to the lines is so urrhgjsh. I've talked about this before but if anyone else said the things Gale says, it'd be kinda meh.

But Tim adds so much humour and sweetness to his line delivery. For example, his introduction "I'm Gale of Waterdeep, renowed scholar and wizard of exceptional ability."

Irl if someone said that to me I'd be like ok dude? But he says it so quirky and it feels like he's genuinely really proud.

I do agree with you that perhaps some of the writers only remember or saw Gale as egotistical, and that kinda seeped into the game. Because for EA Genuis Prodigy Casanova "Yeah we just fucked but the morning after I'll tell you I think I'm still in love with Mystra" Gale, yeah he was definitely That Guy. He's the kind of guy my friends would DEFINITELY mock me for dating.

Not my type, personally.

But our current Gale is so nerdy and so curious and so conflicted and so so passionate and so AAARGRHAGGRHRG.

I wanna kiss him on the forehead.

PS. Some of his casanova lines were still kept, which added a lovely horny quality to the man.

Example : "Not the kind of excitement I usually enjoy being woken up for."

So now he's turned into a really sweet, but really freaky cat dad.

I know it's because they both have Issues TM but in retrospect it's a little bit funny that Donna is insecure about her place with The Doctor and wonders whether she deserves to travel the stars or is worthwhile as a friend while Ten is just sitting in the corner like "if I get separated from Donna I'm gonna explode the universe and then myself" and then he does.
