what is an RSS feed and why does AO3 have them?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and the word syndication here is referring to broadcasting or transferring or otherwise sharing information. I first encountered it as a way to aggregate all of the news sites and blogs I wanted to read that were scattered all over the internet.

You might already be familiar with tumblr blogs that start with ao3feed - these are automated blogs that create a new post every time a work is posted in the feed(s) that they track. You can follow those tumblr blogs and learn about new works that way. They've subscribed to the RSS feed so that you don't have to.

If you wish that you could get push notifications from AO3 on your phone instead? The RSS feed will allow you to do that. You just need to get an account with an RSS reader first. Here are a few that are free:

They each have slightly different features, so depending on the search and filter options you want or how you like your information displayed, you might like one better than the others. All three work on the web, on iOS, and on Android.

Once you have a feed reader, tap on the RSS Feed button at the top of the tag results page that you want to get notifications for and open up the XML file. If it downloads instead, try opening in a new tab or just copying the link address. You'll want to grab a url that looks like this: https://archiveofourown.org/tags/9835/feed.atom (this is the url for Kirk/Spock, if you're curious)

That feed.atom ending on the url is what you're looking for. When you open your RSS reader and create a new feed, you can use that url to set it up.

Once it's set up, you'll be able to see everything currently available in that tab, listed out in your reader. Just like the ao3feed tumblr blogs, the reader will show you the title, author, summary and tags for each fic, and then it will provide you with a link to read the work on AO3.

It will also notify you every time a new work is posted to that tag. You can adjust your notifications to suit you.

Not every tag on AO3 has an RSS feed, but it's worth checking out if you've never tried it before.

How do I set up a syndicated feed if one doesn't exist for my fandom?

If you've searched the site you'd like to use and a syndicated feed doesn't already exist for the tag you'd like to subscribe to, you can create one. Please refer to How do I subscribe to, or unsubscribe from, a feed? for instructions on how to search for feeds. There are many sites that support syndication, and every site will have different requirements or steps for syndication.

Please keep in mind that syndications are user-created and hosted on other sites. They aren't managed or filtered by any Archive team. Archive of Our Own (AO3) also doesn't control how users choose to tag their works and any work connected to the tag will show up in your feed.

That's the FAQ entry for creating a feed, which I'd like to do on a particular metatag for my personal reference. But... it's very vague, so can anyone who's ever DONE this before assist with this? I'm planning to post the feed to Discord so that I can pick out items I want to share to another audience.

Without looking it up, when you first hear "Tornado Warning", what does that mean to you?

I have met. so many people in real life who do not know what "Tornado Watch" means, who do not know what "Tornado Warning" means.

literally 9 out of 10 (aka 90%) of people I meet think that "Tornado Watch" is the more dangerous alert, and think "Tornado Warning" is less severe.

Most people I meet who hear 'Tornado Warning' think it's a good idea to go outside and look at the cool clouds.

FEMA or whoever needs to officially change these stupid-ass names, or do one HELL of a public awareness campaign, because this can and will get people killed; there's already been multiple deadly tornadoes just this week.

Tornado Watch: Watch out, and be cautious! -- Keep an ear out for alerts, and make sure you know where you need to take shelter! A tornado could possibly form in this storm, and you need to be ready.

Tornado Warning = Warning! A Tornado is currently forming or is already formed! -- Take shelter immediately on the lowest floor of your home away from windows!

also, even though this rarely happens, if you get an alert that says Tornado Emergency, that means you need to get underground or in your shelter immediately. Do not wait. Not doing so could get you killed.

i live in a place where nobody takes Watch or Warning very seriously, because tornadoes happen more where i live than anywhere else in the world. but as soon as the weather service declares an Emergency, everyone packs it up and gets their ass to the shelter.

Okay but this note does not count and we’re doing this the only way I know how which is by making a joke about it due to the Terror Of Being Known

Do you like post-apocalyptic fantasy? Do you like faeries? What about gay faeries? Then boy do I have a novel for you! Set in the realm of Rog this novel follows the adventures of Sage! He’s one of the healers with the special ability to heal the land of any damages wrought to it by humans (the machine of industry marches onward) and faeries (sometimes you send nature into overdrive to kill the humans don’t worry about the long term consequences its fineeee) alike! He thus far has used this ability to make the earth more malleable for humans!

(This has consequences)

This of course, does not please the faeries. Or the faerie king in disguise that is maybe Sage’s neighbour. Who Sage maybe is friends with. Listen. The faerie king did not WANT to become attached to this weird human who threatened him with a frying pan when they met but he is.

Which is a problem.

Because the faerie king is very much supposed to kill Sage because he’s killed a lot of other healers as well and it’s never bothered him but it’s bothering him now and he’s HAVING ISSUES ABOUT IT.

Anyway the Horror part comes with the fact that the pollution that Sage is supposed to be healing also causes mass hysteria, hallucinations, and very much tries to kill everyone with symptoms very similar to certain poisonous plants.

So yeah, if you guys make me write the book(s) this is what you’re getting.

Upon seeing Cecil in his paladin’s armor, Edward had an idea, pushing the Twin Harp into Cecil’s hands. Still, Edward worried that when the time came, he wouldn’t know what to do.
