fandom tumblr was another casualty of streaming services. we used to be on here posting about the episodes that were coming out weekly and posting gifs and writing insane shit about the tv shows we liked. now a new season of a show will drop and we’ll talk about it for a week. two weeks tops. and then that show will leave collectively conscious for 1+ year till the next season drops. there’s a reason succession sundays was a blast on here

we used to have real television

Hold on i need to ask my friend Claudia, who is a college student and edits wikipedia something real quick...

THIS IS MY FRIEND CLAUDIA

hi everyone! that's me, I'm claudia :) absolutely gobsmacked to read the tags, much love to all of you. If you're a claudia, I'm starting a discord server for us, so get in touch! Also get in touch if you want to start editing Wikipedia :) I'd be happy to help you get started.

It's funny, the claudias represent some of my best and some of my worst work overall; I wrote most of them as a much newer Wikipedian, although works like Claudia Jean Cregg, Claudia Riner, and Claudia Meier Volk still hold up. Claudia Powers and Claudia Belk, less so. I'm planning on writing Claudia Kishi and rewriting Claudia Alta Taylor (aka Lady Bird Johnson) Some of my cooler non-Claudia works include Pronunciation of GIF, Capri-Sun (in collaboration with my awesome friend Tamzin), and Jon Stewart's 2004 appearance on Crossfire.

Also, Liz, Diannaa, PMC, and the Connecticut woman are extremely cool people who also deserve your thanks. in honor of this post, here are some more women on Wikipedia who are indeed extremely iconic:

  • Yoninah and Cwmhiraeth nearly singlehandedly ran the Main Page's "Did you know" section for years on end; Yoninah passed away a few years ago, and Cwmhiraeth is mostly retired, but they did an awe-inspiring amount of work to keep that section of the MP alive and prospering
  • Sennecaster has done a ridiculous amount of thankless work cleaning up other people's copyright violations, including editors who left a trail of copyright problems through years of poor article-writing and left behind a huge mess for everyone else to clean up. She's also just one of the sweetest people I've ever met.
  • Valereee, in addition to being a hypercompetent administrator who doesn't duck the tough calls, has written some fantastic articles on food. Go read her article on Cincinatti chili, it's fantastic (fun fact: not actually chili!)
  • Jengod has done a crapton of good work around American slavery and the Civil War era; her page on Andrew Johnson's drunk vice-presidential inaugural address is well worth a read.
  • SandyGeorgia is an insanely good writer who has produced a significant number of featured articles (vetted and chosen by the community as its best work) like Tourette syndrome and J. K. Rowling and took ten people through the grueling adminship election process (despite never being an admin herself!)
  • HelenDegenerate was one of my co-conspirators on a fun project where we wrote Fuccboi and Fuccbois; she also likes classic rock and showtunes, which i personally think is cooler than everything else actually
  • Generalissima is newer on the scene, but that hasn't stopped her from racking up a ton of shiny badges for her work on everything from New Zealand coinage to American Indigineous explorers like Tatannuaq to Sophia, a Person of Quality.
  • And Depths of Wikipedia, of course!

oh, and proof that i'm me:

The last time we were on a long flight, my wife and I invented a game we call "Little Guy."

You start a game of Little Guy by saying, "I'm gonna hand you a little guy." The little guy is some kind of baby animal you are imagining. "Oh," she might say in response, "Okay," and hold out her hands for it. I will then mime handing her the animal. This provides some clues as to the little guy's size, weight, and general ungainliness.

She then gets to ask questions about what kind of little guy this is, BUT NO QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS ACTUAL APPEARANCE OR SPECIES ARE ALLOWED. Qualitative questions, or questions about his behavior, are the only ones permitted. She can ask "Is he soft?" or "Does he seem nervous about being held?" or "If I put him in the bathtub, does he seem okay with that?" or "Would he like a lil grape?" or "Is he the sort of little fellow who would wear a vest in a children's book?" but not "Does he have fur," "Is he a reptile," "Is he from Asia," etc. Some questions are in a grey area so you have to follow your heart, but the point is not to identify the animal as fast as possible: the point is to guess the animal purely based on vibes + how he would act if he were in your living room right now.

And I'm not limited to yes or no answers! If she asks, "Would it feel appropriate to see this little guy in a propeller hat?" I can reply, "Oh no, he has a gravity to him. A bowler hat would be a more appropriate hat." Or if she asks, "Does this little guy have protagonist energy?" I can say something like, "he probably wouldn't be the main character in a children's cartoon. He'd probably be the main character's ditzy best friend who's always eating sandwiches, or something."

We're big Twenty Questions to kill time in a waiting room people, but Little Guy is more about the journey than the destination. It's got a different kind of sauce that's nice if "killing time" and "lowering anxiety" need to happen hand in hand.

Reenactor throws a spear at a drone

“The medieval warrior, realizing the consequences of his impulsive act, immediately approached the owner of the drone and offered to pay for the damage.

The owner of the drone was so impressed by the brilliant attack that he suggested organizing a competition for bringing down “dragons” with short spears next year.

Drone owners have another year to develop a unique “dragon-like” design for their flying machines.” (x)

I am 100% cooler with this knowing that the spear-thrower realized “oops maybe I shouldn’t have done that” and tried to make it right, and that the guy who the drone belonged to was cool with it

just so everyone knows, this has already been memorialized in a runestone

It’s crazy how low self-worth fucks with peoples lives

“What will I be if I don’t graduate/don’t get a promotion/don’t get my shit together/don’t make this relationship work?” You would be a perfectly normal human being who is inherently valuable and who possesses many talents and good traits

“What if I fail even when I tried my very best?” The world keeps turning and you will find many other things you will succeed at.

evangelical christians are missing out with the whole not believing in evolution thing, that shit's cool as fuck

like look at this shit

this is an example of what are known as homologous structures. because of the similarities in bone structure, it suggests that all creatures shown here have a common ancient ancestor

essentially these all have the same bones, but shifted, stretched, fused, and warped by evolution and time to serve the purpose the animal needed

and they all do have a common ancestor, as does all life on earth

look at this crazy ass tree showing EVERYTHING started as a teeny tiny ancient bacteria and evolved and grew over millions of years to fucking EVERYTHING, all life being connected to this singular point

idk abt you guys but to me that's cool as fuck and I hate that people don't teach it in schools based on what a book said
