alright i am sick of yt to mp4 sites being shady and full of viruses and finding websites that seem to be working and then don't work (looking at you y232 (no hate, just frustrated))

so HERE'S HOW YOU DOWNLOAD YOUTUBE VIDEOS WITH VLC!! VLC FREAKIN RULES!!

  1. get your youtube link
  2. open vlc, go to media > open network stream
  3. paste your url in the box and PRESS PLAY!
  4. wait for the video to open then go to tools > codec information
  5. copy the entire file location (click the box, then ctrl-a to select all, then ctrl-c to copy)
  6. paste into your browser of choice (i use firefox)
  7. right click video and press "save video as", choose your file format if you want
  8. DONE! NO VIRUSES OR SKETCHY STUFF!

the quality might be a little crummy but if you don't mind that, then shabam! video on your computer! then you can email it to yourself and have it on your phone too if you want! if you need a guide with pictures wikihow has you covered my friends

happy downloading and stay safe on the internet :D

I FORGOT SOMETHING SHOOT I'M REALLY SORRY

YOU NEED TO UPDATE YOUR YOUTUBE.LUAC FILE FOR THIS TO WORK!!!

  1. Go to here https://github.com/videolan/vlc/blob/master/share/lua/playlist/youtube.lua
  2. Navigate to C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\playlist (or whatever equivalent there is on Mac; if you have a Mac just fish around in the program files you're bound to find it somewhere)
  3. Open youtube.luac with a text editor like Notepad
  4. Delete whatever's in there and replace it with ALL of the stuff with the github file.
  5. Save the file, restart VLC, and then it should work.

PLEASE REBLOG THIS ADDITION FOR THE LOVE OF CRUMBCAKE THIS IS RIDICULOUSLY IMPORTANT

(and re: other additions in the tags, I hear you and that’s totally fair you want quality! but if you really don’t care and/or those websites are blocked, this is a workaround you can use)

As a side note this is all perfectly legal. When sued by google, the French courts (because VLCs parent organization is French) concluded that because Youtube was distributing their videos for free, people had every right to download them for free, and no violation of intellectual property was being committed.

People with low spoons, someone just recommended this cookbook to me, so I thought I'd pass it on.

I always look at cookbooks for people who have no energy/time to do elaborate meal preparations, and roll my eyes. Like, you want me to stay on my feet for long enough to prepare 15 different ingredients from scratch, and use 5 different pots and pans, when I have chronic fatigue and no dishwasher?

These people seem to get it, though. It's very simple in places. It's basically the cookbook for people who think, 'I'm really bored of those same five low-spoons meals I eat, but I can't think of anything else to cook that won't exhaust me'. And it's free!

Ooooo useful! Thank you!

DONT USE THE PIRATE BAY PLEASEEEE I BEG YOU.

Use 1337x.to rarbg or rutracker, highly moderated public torrent trackers, because Pirate Bay has long been shut down, unmoderated, and cloned by some shady actors AND use Mullvad VPN (or any other vpn but mullvad is the best definitely) to protect your ip address while you torrent, bind it to qbittorrent and do not use utorrent anymore either because it is littered with adware.

OR if you don’t want to pay for a VPN, use direct download or streaming sites. Please y’all just take one pass through on the r/piracy or r/freemediaheckyeah mega threads to find whatever you want for free and also not infect your computer with Trojan viruses.

Introducing - the Shrinken

You know those D&D sessions where utter mayhem happens and you have no idea how you got from point A to point utter idiocy? Yeah, that.

In the middle of tonight's session (and please don't ask me what led up to it because I have NO IDEA, I JUST LITERALLY LOOKED AWAY FOR A SECOND AND THERE IT WAS), right as we were preparing a FUNERAL for one of our DEAREST NPCs, one of our party members shared the following pic in our Discord chat (picture found at: https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/weird-animal-hybrids):

We saw it and immediately went - boss. So, introducing the Shrinken (my "Chimp" suggestion was sadly overruled due to an alleged member of the animal kingdom which already holds this name).

Stats are currently being worked on by our DM. One of our buddies will also make a fully serious illustration of the beast. The NPC funeral has been put on hold (i.e. none of us give a damn currently because SHRINKEN).

Help, lol.

Edit: Currently we are discussing a sub-species called the Freud Shrinken. It makes you self-conscious about your relationship with your parents.

So the DM has finished creating the details. We added some Legend of Picoki elements (for my little Podravina soul). Here are the deets:

Shrinken:

AC: 14 HP: 38 or 7d6 + 6

STR: 11

DEX: 18

CON: 13

INT: 2

WIS: 9

CHA: 4

Size: small, unaligned monstrosity

Speed: 25ft Swimming speed: 40ft

all the tips I found for drawing a fantasy map are like :) “here’s a strategy to draw the land masses! here’s how to plot islands!” :) and that’s wonderful and I love them all but ??? how? do y'all decide where to put cities/mountains/forests/towns I have my map and my land but I’m throwing darts to decide where the Main Citadel where the Action Takes Place is

okay so i know i said most of this in the replies but it might be easier to actually reblog and say stuff instead lmao

Cities - go near water!  freshwater lakes and rivers (rivers especially) are the best places for cities because A) source of water and B) travel and trade is much easier cus you can put your boats like right there.  Basically ever relevant city ever was built on a lake or a river.

for rivers in general - because gravity, rivers run from mountains (forming from melting snow and ice (this is why they get fat in spring–more stuff melting)) to lakes/ocean where they can empty out (and even lakes will have rivers leading out that eventually get to the ocean), which can help when mapping out where those start and end.  rivers are also much thinner and faster in steeper elevations and very slow and wide when the land is flat

mountains - i like to think of what the tectonic plates look like because that’s what makes mountains!  mountains are also never standalone they’re always in mountain ranges (archipelagos are really just underwater mountain ranges babey).  a cool trick I like to do is occasionally separate mountain ranges across continents, because over time the tectonic plates shifted and literally split the range in half.  These mountains are really old tho so they’ve eroded and therefore it makes them smaller and rounder (like the appalachians) as opposed to relatively young mountain ranges like the rocky mountains which have taller and sharper peaks

Another mountain trick: if your mountains run along the ocean, the ocean side of the mountains will get a LOT of rain while the other side will be very dry–almost desert-like, in fact.  think of temperate rainforests in British Columbia vs the drier conditions in the canadian prairies

forests - depends on how warm the area might be.  coniferous forests are found further north (before you hit the tree line, and then it’s only tundra onwards) but as you head south you get leafier trees, and the leaves tend to get larger too

If you think about general elevation too, you’ll have places that might be swampy (wet + lower).  if your world has an ice age like we did, then glaciers may have carved the land, leaving piles of soil in the south that was left when the ice receded and places where the bedrock has been bared north of that (like the Canadian Shield in Canada–the reason we see that is because of the glaciers)

You might also have a land that’s dotted in a shitton of freshwater lakes as well because the meltwater filled the holes that the glaciers scraped out (this is why canada has so many goddamn lakes)

and if the ice age was more recent than it was in our world, then you might not even have the forest re-growth and it could be a lot of open plains

tl;dr i like to think of major climate events that might have also shaped the land on top of some basic rules

The Artifexian has an entire series on building your world from literally the stars down and then the ground up.

Though, for fantasy, you can make the world operate on entirely different principles:

With that done, the actual topic of city placement can be covered by videos like this:

Or

Once you have your places, if you want help naming them in realistic ways, this video can help:

This one is on architecture, which is definitely a subset of cities:

But for a more relevant practical guide on making settlements realistic:

Here’s a quick guide for making demographics:

holy shit?

I will need this in the future, thank you OPs ❤️

This, my dear Tumblr friends, is the Ban Jelačić Square - the main square in Zagreb, while the national anthem is playing for the national soccer team. The national soccer team, which spent 7 hours driving through an ocean of people (for a trip that usually lasts 40 mins tops, even in the worst traffic, mind you). The national soccer team, which beat England despite the horrible remarks the British media made about them. The national soccer team, which accepted their silver medals in tears, thinking they had let their nation down, thinking they weren’t good enough, thinking they had failed to make the dream this nation has had since 1998 a reality.

Yesterday, that stadium in Russia went deadly silent on the Croatian side and even the sky wept. Today, the sun was shining, people from the entire country flooded the main city. Yesterday, they were trying to suppress tears. Today, they are doing the same, but for an entirely different reason.

Let me tell you why this is important. Croatia is my home. Croatia has many problems as a country, as a people. Croatia is far from perfect and we so often get lost in the negativity. People so often decide to leave and never return. Things so often go wrong. For the longest time, I thought the only thing that could unite us as a nation was war (specifically, one whose aftermath is still evident in a lot of our everyday lives). Today, I realized I was wrong.

Today started off as a regular day. I went to work, like on a typical Monday morning. Eight hours later, as my tram turned onto the main street, I was shocked. People in jerseys everywhere, with their children, a sea of red, white and blue, all of them happy, patient, excited.

I had already made my way home, sad that most of my friends are already gone for the summer and I have nobody to visit the main square with, when a friend of mine called me to get my ass back into town. She had gotten stuck in traffic because our boys were close and there were just too many people. As I made my way back into town to meet her at a cafe (far from the crowd), I couldn’t help but get emotional. In the heat of the moment, we decided to sprint to the nearby street and meet the bus. I saw them - the soccer giants I had grown up watching, each and every one with his own emotional story - so tired, so beat. Probably a little drunk, too. But so happy. And their proud manager holding their shirts and pants so they don’t fall off the bus, like a loving father.

I don’t remember the last time this country was so united. People like to say we have the same heart beating underneath our jerseys. I beg to differ. We have many different hearts - some still small, some too big for their own good, some young and passionate, some old and sleepy - but all these hearts, beating in their wild discord, make for one unique country.

This, my friends, is why the longest ride from the airport to the main square in Zagreb history, with these 22 happy boys and their proud father, followed by 550 000 people and the rest of the world, is important.

                                             ♥♥♥ HRVATSKA ♥♥♥

Never thought this would happen again, but we're throwing another party at the square tomorrow! <3 <3 <3 My heart is growing three sizes this Christmas.

had a minor crisis when 12ft.io went down yesterday and thankfully it’s back now but this seems like a good opportunity to compile a list of similar paywall-evading tools in case 12ft ever gets canned for real:

  • 12ft.io: the legend himself. definitely my favorite of the bunch by virtue of being the easiest to use (and the easiest url to remember), but it’s configured to disable paywall evasion for a handful of popular sites like the new york times, so you’ll have to go elsewhere for those.
  • printfriendly: works great; never had any issues with removing paywalls, even on domains that don’t work with 12ft.io. since this site is literally designed to make sites print-friendly, it might simplify the overall formatting of the page you’re trying to access, which can be a good or bad thing. my only real issue is that the “element zapper” (which lets you remove content blocks from the print-friendly preview) is a little sensitive if you’re browsing on a touchscreen device, which means you might accidentally delete a paragraph when you’re just trying to scroll. but if that happens you can reload the page and it’ll revert everything back to its original state.
  • fifteen feet: basically a 12ft clone, minus 12ft’s restrictions. haven’t used it much since I only discovered it yesterday in the wake of 12ft’s 451 error but it seems to do the trick.
  • archive.today: an archival tool very similar to the wayback machine, but it also works as a de facto paywall removal tool. (the wayback machine seems to remove paywalls as well, but archive.today has better UX imo and is way faster to use.)
  • and an honorable mention for sci-hub: only works for scientific/academic journals, not random news articles, but the other sites listed above only work for random news articles and not academic publications so you gotta have this one in your toolbelt for full coverage. pubmed is your oyster.
